Iggy Azalea Claims Longest Hot 100 Reign For A Female Rapper With 'Fancy'Plus, MAGIC!'s 'Rude' rises 3-2, Sam Smith takes over atop Digital Songs and Vine star Shawn Mendes debuts
Iggy Azalea makes history on the Billboard Hot 100, as "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, rewrites the record for the longest-leading No. 1 by a female rapper. With a sixth week at the summit, she passes Lil' Kim, who spent five weeks at No. 1 with the all-star collaboration "Lady Marmalade" in 2001.
Meanwhile, MAGIC!'s "Rude" rises 3-2, Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" reaches No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart and teen Vine star Shawn Mendes debuts at No. 24 on the Hot 100 with his first single "Life of the Party."
It's Wednesday, so let's run down all the key numbers behind the Hot 100's top 10 and more.
With her sixth week at No. 1, Azalea now stands alone atop the exclusive list of female rappers who've spent the most time in the lead. Here's an updated look at the mere four such No. 1s, ranked by most weeks on top:
6 weeks, "Fancy," Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX, 2014
5 weeks, "Lady Marmalade," Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and P!nk, 2001
2 weeks, "Doo Wop (That Thing)," Lauryn Hill, 1998
1 week, "Stand Up," Ludacris featuring Shawnna, 2003
"Fancy" continues its Hot 100 command with a third week at No. 1 on Radio Songs, although it decreases by 2 percent to 147 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS. It logs a seventh week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs, down by 5 percent to 11.1 million U.S. streams, according to BDS. On Digital Songs, "Fancy" drops 2-3 (after leading for four weeks until last week) with 178,000 downloads sold, down 9 percent, in the tracking week ending on June 29, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"Fancy" crowns the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts for a sixth and 11th week, respectively. It also tops the Songs of the Summer ranking for a fifth week, remaining the only song that has ruled since the chart returned after Memorial Day.
Below "Fancy" on the Hot 100, Canadian pop/reggae foursome
MAGIC! pushes 3-2 with its debut hit "Rude," which gains in all three of the chart's metrics. It dips 1-2 after a week atop Digital Songs, but gains by less than 1 percent to 210,000. "Rude" rises 5-4 on Radio Songs (123 million, up 14 percent) and bullets for a second week at No. 4 on Streaming Songs (7.3 million, up 7 percent).
Could "Rude," well, rudely, dethrone "Fancy" before long? It looks possible, as "Fancy" deflates by 5 percent in overall Hot 100 points and "Rude" grows by 6 percent. The former leads this week with a 14 percent points lead over the latter.
With "Rude" moving into the Hot 100's runner-up spot,
Ariana Grande's "Problem," featuring Azalea, drops 2-3 after five weeks at its No. 2 highpoint. Azalea, thus, relinquishes her lock on the chart's top two ranks after five weeks, leaving her in a tie with Ashanti for the longest such run by a woman; Ashanti locked up Nos. 1 and 2 from April 20 through May 18, 2002, with her own "Foolish" and as a guest on Fat Joe's "What's Luv?"
Azalea also keeps behind the Beatles among acts that have spent the most time at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously with their first two Hot 100 entries. The Fab Four holds the record with 10 such weeks in a row in 1964.
Still, "Problem" has its sights set on the No. 1 spot on Radio Songs, where it bullets for a second week at No. 2. With a 2 percent gain to 145 million, it's just 2 million in audience below "Fancy." As previously reported, "Problem" climbs to No. 1 on both the Pop Songs and Rhythmic Songs airplay charts this week.
"Problem" falls from its No. 2 high to No. 3 on Streaming Songs (8.3 million, down 12 percent) and 3-4 on Digital Songs (153,000, down 6 percent), which it topped for three frames.
Norwegian pop duo Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong" bullets at its No. 4 peak to date for a second week. The song, which tops Adult Pop Songs this week, holds at No. 3 on Radio Songs (143 million, up 14 percent); slips 5-6 on Digital Songs, but with a 5 percent lift to 147,000; and reaches the Streaming Songs top 10 (12-10; 4.6 million, up 4 percent).
As he holds at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with his debut full-length album "In the Lonely Hour,"
Sam Smith likewise remains at his No. 5 highpoint on the Hot 100 with "Stay With Me." The U.K. pop singer/songwriter's ballad also leaps 4-1 on Digital Songs (211,000, up 42 percent). (The gain follows last week's 10 percent sales slide, which was owed to iTunes customers who opted to "complete" their purchase of Smith's album by upgrading their earlier purchases of "Stay" to the entire set. Effectively, consumers who completed "Hour" returned the song, thus translating to its sales decline.)
"Stay," atop the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart for a second week, adds top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100, surging 9-7 on Radio Songs (96 million, up 22 percent). On Streaming Songs, it bounds 20-15 (3.2 million, up 15 percent).
Smith concurrently climbs to just outside the Hot 100's top 10 with his third top 20 Hot 100 hit,
Disclosure's "Latch," on which he's featured (12-11). In his first visit, as featured on Naughty Boy's "La La La," he peaked at No. 19.
Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, last week's Nos. 6-10 songs remain in place:
Jason Derulo's "Wiggle," featuring Snoop Dogg (No. 6); John Legend's former three-week No. 1 "All of Me" (No. 7); Calvin Harris' "Summer," which rules the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a second week (No. 8); DJ Snake and Lil Jon's "Turn Down for What" (No. 9); and Pharrell Williams' former 10-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Happy" (No. 10). The Hot 100's highest debut belongs to 15-year-old Canadian pop singer
Shawn Mendes, who bows at No. 24 with his debut Island Records single "Life of the Party." The ballad starts with nearly all its chart points from sales, as it launches at No. 5 on Digital Songs with 148,000 first-week downloads sold. While no official radio promotion is planned for the song, according to Island president David Massey, 25 of the approximately 1,200 radio stations that report to the Hot 100 sampled the song last week, including adult pop WWFS (Fresh 102.7) New York. Streaming also accounts for a fraction of the song's Hot 100 points; the release of its official lyric video on Monday (June 30) could aid its fortunes on next week's charts.
As previously reported, Mendes, who gained a large following after he began posting video clips on Vine, earns the largest opening week for an act's debut single since the week ending May 27, 2012, when Phillip Phillips' "Home" began (at No. 2 on Digital Songs and No. 10 on the Hot 100) with 278,000. Four days earlier, Phillips had won the 11th season of Fox's "American Idol."
Slightly more than a month shy of his 16th birthday, Mendes additionally launches as the youngest artist ever to debut in the Hot 100's top 25 with a first chart entry. He passes 2011 "Idol" runner-up Lauren Alaina, who was 16 years and seven months old when "Like My Mother Does" began at No. 20 that June. Overall, Mendes is the youngest artist to debut in the top 25 since Justin Bieber's second Hot 100 hit, "One Less Lonely Girl," started at No. 16 on the Oct. 24, 2009, chart. At the time, he was 15 years, seven months and three weeks young.
On the Billboard Twitter Top Tracks chart, "Party" soars in at No. 12.
"I'm definitely not used to anything that's going on," Mendes marveled to Billboard earlier this month of his rise. "I'm in awe."
