Let me ask this, what is everyone so afraid she would have lost or what would have happened if she were to have been boldly political and made a drastic statement? To me it seems declining popularity and fewer record sales would be the fear, but would hardcore Trump supporters, many of them poor to middle class middle age straight white men, really buy her music anyway? Or, would her hardcore fans not buy her music because of this? That would be ludicrous. Most people probably wouldn't care, because, less you don't pay any attention to the polls or the general feelings of everyday Americans, most people do not like Trump! I don't think it's a case of her own fanbase not buying her music or supporting her but whatever her statement would have been would have taken away from her performance because then all coverage would be about her statement. There would be criticism from the right, obviously, which is probably neither here nor there but less people would be praising her performance for what it was and more would be commenting (either for or against) her statement. Which is maybe fine, but many many celebrities have made statements in some way and Gaga's would be another to add to the laundry list. It would get lost in the shuffle and that would be the end of it. It seems many people no longer care for the lost art of subtly. I saw one article that said something like "if you think Gaga didn't make a political statement, you're privilege is blinding you" or whatever. I think that's true. The statement was there. For once, she kept it subtle. Maybe the question back to you is, what could she have said or done that would have been in any way beneficial to anyone? Note: angering the right is not beneficial. Entertaining, yes. Beneficial, no. I guess I personally didn't want her to say or not say anything in particular, obviously it was up to her what to do and she absolutely had the prerogative to not do anything political, but I think performing Perfect Illusion along with some anti-Trump or anti-extreme right graffic would have been brilliant, or just performing PI and making that front and center stage of the performance would have been good enough. Just something that would go along with the tendencies of her career, which has been not only as an artist but an outspoken political activist and social critic, something to let the left know she still has their back and that would continue to energize that cause.

The ONLY thing that bothers me about this political question is how right-wing media trolls like Piers Morgan and Tammy Lauren were appeased and thanked her for "not being political" (whether or not she was is another story). Everything Gaga stands for flies in the face of their beliefs and they don't deserve to feel represented by her. EDIT: Btw she killed it. You do know that was to spite Beyonce, right? Both Pier and Loren went after Beyonce for her "racist" performance at last year's SB. Is John Wayne the next single? It's featured on Apple Music's Hot Tracks. I think they're just too stupid to get the subtext, honestly.

What do you think the whole point of that Intro and hugging Tinashe was all about?

She did an amazing job. It felt so perfect and polished.
Her vocals were great.
The costumes were awesome.
The visuals were stunning.
The song selection was good. Can't lie though, I definitely wanted Perfect Illusion and Applause.
She was political, but not divisive. It was very pro-patriotism and pro-diversity.

They were still appeased though, a ton of racist comments that praise Gaga vs. BeyoncΓ© followed suit, even if the whole of her career is just about as politically charged as BeyoncΓ©'s.

I like the "John Wayne" video too. It's a nice marriage of her former and current styles.

Wonderful video! Same goes for the song, one of the best on the album. Why is this an Apple Music exclusive that will most likely do nothing and fade away quickly, what is wrong with the music industry?!

Maybe it's an Apple Music Exclusive today and will be on YouTube & Vevo this or next Friday for the Streamz. Follow that up with her Grammy performance with Metallica of the song, and she suddenly gets another hit off of Joanne after the feeble life of "Million Reasons"

Not sure if it can give her a proper hit but the video itself is a triumph

I saw the 'John Wayne' video and thought it was great, and I kinda liked the tie-in to 'Million Reasons' with the pink outfit and guitar on the white background. Is Gaga's plan for the videos this era to make them string together like this?
Meanwhile the song itself sounds so much better than I remembered it, and I'm here for it to be a hit. Come through, 'Million Reasons', and lay down the groundwork to make this happen!

Also, I can't wait for someone to do a Lady GaGa rankdown cause it's gonna be heartbreaking for me to rank what is a set of singles that I love almost entirely. Whenever someone ends up doing one, TAG MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE lol

Why not!
Video Rankdown: (based on memory and having not having seen her pre-Joanne videos since maybe a year ago. I might sit down and watch them all soon though but here goes)
Telephone Alejandro Bad Romance Born This Way Paparazzi Judas John Wayne Applause Marry The Night You And I Eh Eh Poker Face LoveGame GUY Just Dance Edge of Glory Beautiful Dirty Rich Perfect Illusion Million Reasons
Marry The Night would probably be higher if it existed in a shortened version. I did like the mini-film aspect of it but as a music video, it's overdone. But when the song begins, the rest of the video is fire!
Applause and John Wayne are maybe tied since I only actually seen John Wayne once and haven't seen Applause in over a year.

"Judas" is her magnum opus.
I'm still bitter "The Edge of Glory" was basic and uninspired.

"Judas" is her magnum opus. I'm still bitter "The Edge of Glory" was basic and uninspired. The song deserves so much better in every aspect. The best thing about it is that it's the grand finale on the Born This Way about it. Beyond that, it seems like she pays it dust. I'm still bitter she didn't do it on the Artpop tour.
