No matter how you see it, Let it go was one of the biggest songs of the year. There's no way one could say Am I Wrong or Team were more popular than Let it go this year. Honestly... no. It barely got any airplay, so the fact that it's #21 is impressive. It barely got any airplay, and yet I don't think it changes a thing. Still one of the very biggest songs of the year. Can anybody really say: "Let it Go? No, I don't know that song because I never heard it on the radio."?

But do you really think its chart points reflect how big the song was? With a different formula the result could have been completely different, so it's kind of silly to say "Let it go was not a huge hit because it had little airplay." Let's not forget Let it go was such a massive hit that its parent album managed to sell over 3 mi. That's how big the song was. And before someone says album sales don't affect the singles chart, I'd say they don't yet, but how to say they won't next year? Billboard has just revised its album chart, so they might as well revise the singles chart to better reflect the success of some songs that manage to move albums instead of digital singles.

Nor does it matter that "Let It Go" didn't crack the year-end top 20- it was as close as a single could get, and that's without ever cracking the top 50 in airplay. Which shows how strong it was overall in other components, which helped its weekly Hot 100 performance.
I'm willing to bet that it will be far more remembered than a good number of those singles that did finish in the top 20- and that's because of the juggernaut that is Frozen.

For me at least, there seems to be no real surprises in the Hot 100 Songs list. The biggest surprise is probably Love Never Felt So Good Ranking as high as it did and Unconditionally not making the cut.

Where was Shakira on the Social list? Because I dont see how a song at #85, an album at #75, and no touring to make up the difference lands her at #41 on the artist chart.

Because hardly anyone buys albums?!?! Why would they have albums being reflected on the singles chart??? That makes no sense. Anyways, yes it was a huge hit, BUT it didn't have enough points to reach top 20 so, no, I don't think it's worthy of one of those positions... That's just how the formula goes.

Let it Go at #21? Just goes to show how flawed their methodology can be... You underestimated how huge Let It Go was after Christmas last year. It was huge, and would have went to #1 if radio even played it a tiny bit.

Let It Go was HUGE in spite of what radio numbers report. I would agree that a #21 placement for it is too low as well. And it's definitely not the end of discussion.

Sorry I am just now reading the entire thread.
So just based on gut, what # do you think Let It Go would have been given all things were equal airplay wise , or not factoring in current Billboard methodology
I'd actually say Let It Go was either the 2nd or even biggest song of last year. It certainly rivaled Happy on hugeness scale.

Let it Go's position is really impressive given that radio basically gave it the middle finger, despite massive sales and streaming. Frozen, and thus this song, will be well remembered as a Disney classic, outlasting the majority of the other songs on this list.
Anyway, I'm not surprised at Happy, Dark Horse, and All of Me being the top 3. Those three songs were in the top 3 together in some combination for the longest time, they all had huge peaks and massive longevity.

#1 Happy (Digital Song of the Year) #2 Dark Horse (Streaming Song of the Year) #3 All Of Me (Radio Song of the Year)
Interesting how each of the top 3 performed best in at least 1/3 major components of the Hot 100. And that Dark Horse beat Happy on two components, but the digital lead of Happy was too much to overcome.

I don't know her position for her yearend placement. But I always remember being surprised at how high she was on the list week to week. I feel like she was in the Top 10 ALOT. Sometimes being Top 3 when The Voice was on and her cd was released. Let's not forget "Empire" probably added A lot to her placement. Lol.

I forgot to respond to this but YourFaveIsAFlop, Shakira was #5 on the Social 50 year-end, which does explain how she's so high on the artist chart. As for why she's so high on the Social 50, there are 2 contributors: the lesser one is the controversy over her grinding, steamy "Can't Remember to Forget You" video, and the giant one is THE WORLD CUP! "Dare (La La La)", even though it didn't peak high, was a commercial song for the show (The Activia commercial featuring it was practically on every break), had 4 versions to maximize exposure (normal/soccer in english/spanish), and was of course anthem for the show, which brought a lot of more casual attention to her. Pitbull's also high at #16 (and has song of the show "We Are One (Ole Ola)"), but it appears that good buzz is better than bad buzz, because his and J.Lo's performance was not well received if I recall.

Billboard Japan first ever year end charts
Billboard's sister organization, Billboard Japan, has released its year-end chart rankings, as well as a redesigned take on its charts for readers.
The redesigned chart display gives readers more nuanced information on the way songs are ranked, from Twitter mentions, airplay, physical and digital sales and Gracenote lookup (especially important in Japan, where CD sales remain strong). An expansion of this update is planned for April 2015.
As well, the Billboard Japan Music Awards 2014 is taking votes for its Artist of the Year award, via Twitter and by measuring plays through Daiichi Kosho karaoke systems. Voting for Artist of the Year began Dec. 12 and is set to continue through Dec. 31, with the winner being announced on Jan. 16.
Below find a selection of Billboard Japan's year-end charts, where -- surprise -- Frozen and Pharrell's "Happy" make tall appearances.
Hot 100 1. Arashi, “GUTS!” 2. AKB48, “Kokoro No Placard” 3. AKB48, “Labrador Retriever” 4. Arashi, “Daremo Shiranai” 5. Arashi, “Bittersweet” 6. Pharrell Williams, “Happy” 7. Takako Matsu, “Let It Go (Ari No Mamade)”
Top Single Sales 1. AKB48, “Labrador Retriever” 2. Arashi, “GUTS!” 3. Arashi, “Bittersweet”
Top Album 1. Frozen soundtrack (Deluxe Edition) 2. Arashi, DIGITALIAN 3. Namie Amuro, Ballada
A 2-CD Deluxe edition of the Frozen soundtrack featuring the score, Japanese language versions, and karaoke versions was the year's Top Album, with last year's year-end chart-topper Arashi's 13th album coming in at a close second.
Hot Top Airplay 1. Pharrell Williams, “Happy” 2. One Direction, “Story Of My Life” 3. Ariana Grande, “Baby I”
Hot Overseas 1. Pharrell Williams, “Happy” 2. One Direction, “Story Of My Life” 3. Idina Menzel, “Let It Go”
As for international artists, Pharrell continued to dominate with his worldwide smash hit "Happy," taking No. 1 on the Hot Overseas Year-End Chart. "Story Of My Life" by One Direction was used in major cellular company Docomo's TV commercials, which lead to the song charting for nearly 50 weeks since its release in 2013. Ariana Grande ranked at No. 3 on the Hot Top Airplay and No. 5 on the Hot Overseas Chart, with "Problem" feat. Iggy Azelea and “Break Free" feat. Zedd also charting in the Top 20.

Has anyone had trouble buying the print edition of the year-end issue? I remember last year it sold out, which was highly shocking (and confusing!)
