Muse is far from being one of the first acts that come to mind when I think of Active Rock, or one of the first 500 acts for that matter...but "Dead Inside" is much more of a part of that reason than "Psycho", obviously. If I had a career going in radio programming and was stuck in charge of an Active Rock station against my will (not an uncommon circumstance, one would think), I'd be spinning the f*** out of a song like "Psycho" there. Eh, I only said what I said because it looks like "Dead Inside" will still be their biggest hit on Active so far, even if "Psycho" sounds more Active friendly. Also, I wouldn't mind being in charge of an Active station. ;) Well, I actually had no clue that "Dead Inside" was literally slaying Active right now...I guess it does have some active drum beats and whatnot. I'd also love an Active rock MD/PD gig, as long as ratings would be a non-issue! Can't really guarantee the 5FDP crowd would continue to listen to a radio station I took over. Agreed 100% I'd also spin Stolen Dance for the laughs. As would I. :).

I'd love to take control of an Alt station. Get them to play more of the artsier hard rock again.

If I was in care of an Alt station I'd still play big alternative bands from the 2000s like Three Days Grace, Seether, Shinedown, Chevelle but imo bands like Volbeat, Five Finger Death Punch, Nothing More and the like don't belong in alternative radio. :/

I'll add You Me At Six, Staind (remember they pulled a Linkin Park in 2011?), Alice In Chains, Linkin Park, Deftones, System of a Down and some Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Godsmack, Starset, Slipknot, Nickelback, Mastodon and Theory of a Deadman in the middle/ lower part of the chart. And I agree that it would also be cool to see Nothing More chart on Alternative.

Staind are one of the reasons indie took off and the chart changed. Why does everyone always forget about the atrocity that was "Believe" getting payolaed to #1?
Agreed on bands like Nothing More not belonging on alt radip.

Agreed on bands like Nothing More not belonging on alt radip. I rather have 'Believe' charting on Alt than 'Royals', 'Get Lucky' (don't get me wrong, I like Daft Punk but it's awkward to see them chart on Alt) and 'Somebody That I Used to Know' , but to each their own. Also, Cody, what is your take on 'Not Again'? (Which missed the top 10 on Alt)

I like "Not Again", but honestly ypu shoulda been here on Pulse when "Believe" went #1. It's not about the quality of the song (it's not that bad but there's nothing particularly good about it either), it's how ridiculous of a #1 it was. It was a generic Staind Hot AC ballad that woulda been passed on and kept as an album filler track on prior albums. Because of that I've resented Staind on alternative, and even though "Not Again" was an improvement, I was happy it didn't go top 10, and never wanna see them get there again.

"Believe" wasn't even the most insane #1 of that year. PUDDLE OF MUDD hit #1 for two weeks that year. PUDDLE OF MUDD. That was a really weird year.

They're just generic rock. I really wouldn't care if the latter two charted around top 30, but that should be it. Deftones and System of a Down agreed, because both of them were two of the best alternative metal bands of the 2000s. Starset's cinematic vibe makes them alternative already, while Mastodon's breed of metal is adored by hipsters, somet shouldn't be hard for them to fit in.

It was so different and well-liked by most of the audience. That's a song that even if released today would probably be a #1.

Regardless of what people say, I still stand by my opinion that 2008 was a great year for Alternative.
But I do agree that "Believe" hitting #1 was quite strange. I didn't expect it to go that far, and I was puzzled as well. Same with "Psycho".

See, I would classify Disturbed and Volbeat as Alternative Metal, same with Deftones and Tool. Since it is an Alternative form, I think that makes them appropriate for Alt radio. I'm not saying they should all go to #1 (Tool and Deftones should), but at least be top 20. And I don't find Disturbed to be generic one bit. They have their own distinct sound to them that I have yet to be replicated. Their core format should be Active, but top 20 on Alt sounds about right.

Alternative radio should at least give more spins to songs like "Same Damn Life" and "I Am Machine" 3DG and Seether smashed on the format during the 00s decade, I know times have changed but still >_> I have to look on Active Rock stations to hear "Coming For You", "Absolution Calling" etc thankfully Detroit 89x is one of the few that still play a mix of current alternative sound and a bit of bands ignored my most alternative stations.
Regular rotation current hitlist on 89x:
Muse - Dead Inside Andrew McMahon - Cecilia and the Satellite Black Keys - Weight of Love Offspring - Coming for You Breaking Benjamin - Failure Imagine Dragons - Shots Mumford & Sons - Believe Three Days Grace - I Am Machine Fall Out Boy - Uma Thurman Incubus - Absolution Calling Foo Fighters - Congregation Dirty Heads - Sound of Change Death Cab for Cutie - Black Sun Robert DeLong - Long Way Down Modest Mouse - Lampshades on Fire Seether - Same Damn Life Awolnation - Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)
Couldn't most alt stations be like this? >_> NOT super indie but a middle of the road, of course majority alternative sound instead of AR, man I miss the 90s and 00s, 2015 is looking a bit better tho...

I miss the good ole days when the Alt charts were dominated by U2, REM, The Cure & Depeche Mode
Clearly I'm in the minority (at least on these boards)

So you aren't in the minority.

Sorry to bump this again, but a gentle reminder that 2008 also allowed Metallica and Disturbed to reach top 5 and a country song (Bartender Song) almost went top 10. But from what I've heard from 2008 so far, it still was a good year.

When it comes to 2008, I can overlook the bad because of all the good that came out of it - The Bravery, Carolina Liar, Radiohead and Ludo never would have scored those hits in a different year.

How the hell did a country song almost go top 10?

I think that's what I miss most about in the past on Alternative. The variety has lessened and you used to hear so many different artists on the chart as the format allowed anything rock-related. You almost never knew what to expect next.
