I'm really surprised that Style is higher than FourFiveSeconds! I love Style so much, go Taylor! I'm just annoyed and disappointed that Tay didn't promote it properly.

^^ did One Sweet Day not get a single week at #2 or #3? :O
Anyway, now that the iHR awards effect is wearing off and Rihanna is falling again, UF is back to #1 in overall sales (the second version surely has more than 0.0588) with Sugar (combined) and Earned It probably overtaking it by morning. I wonder if EI will make its way to #1 soon enough. UF is now just one sales week away from setting a new record of most weeks at #1 on Digital Songs. But Sugar and EI have both been gaining on UF quite nicely this week so you never know how it might go...

Most weeks in the top 3: 1. Smooth - 19 weeks (1999-2000) 2. Un-break My Heart - 18 weeks (1996-1997) 3. We Belong Together (2005) 4. All About That Bass - 17 weeks (2014) 5. Uptown Funk - 16 weeks (and counting)* Looks like Uptown Funk will easily break the record for most weeks in the top 3. This is shaping up to be a whole other beast. One sweet day has to make this list

When reviewing these lists, I long ago started to refer to Candle In The Wind 1997/Something About The Way You Look Tonight as simply Candle In The Wind 1997. The second song really had little to do with the 14 weeks at #1. It did have better airplay for 11 of those weeks but sales was the factor here, not really airplay. Hard to say for sure. Maybe a lot of people bought the single because it had a completely new song tacked along with it, especially in the later weeks when sales weren't insane immediately following the tragedy.

The demand for CITW 1997 was enormous and they could not get it released fast enough as the orders kept growing and growing. It sold something like 3 Million its first week. The single was even sold in a lot of non-traditional outlets, like drug stores, grocery stores, etc. SATWYLT did garner some airplay = especially AC, but not enough to be considered a driver of the song. People bought it for what it meant to them. Billboard even had to 'break' the rule for double-sided singles because the one with the most airplay got the lead, but even they acknowledged it was a bit ridiculous. That's a perfect example of why 'chart' weeks are arbitrary - it's the only Diamond single (so far).

Earned It is about to pass the combined Sugar...
1. Uptown Funk (1.1300 - 1.1350) 2. BBHMM (1.0000) 3. Sugar (0.9421 plus anything the Nicki Minaj might be still getting right now) 4. Earned It (0.9392) 5. Love Me Like You Do (0.8392)
With those continued sales drops, it unfortunately doesn't look like LMLYD is going to get #1. It will probably have spent 3 or 4 total weeks at a #4 peak after passing TOL probably this week. Sugar may have a small chance at #1 with a show performance that spikes sales and streaming...a small chance, but still a chance. I continue to firmly believe that Earned It is the most likely to dethrone Uptown Funk, other than a surprise debut from a pop star with a huge fanbase.
If Sugar fails to reach #1 (which will probably be the case), it will probably spend 5 or 6 weeks at a peak of #2 before being passed by Earned It...just like Payphone which spent 6 total weeks at #2 with reaching #1 :'( OH and let us not neglect the fact that it is already halfway to beating the Starships record which Shake It Off should've beaten! It is a possibility at this point...it would be a nice compensation for a missed #1 I guess! And it would be cool to see two major records being broken within a couple of months...
Trap Queen will probably peak at #4 or #5. I can also see Somebody reaching the top 5 at some point.
These next few weeks will be very interesting to watch. Cheering for Earned It but also would like UF to break the record!

Boom shaka laka!-As expected, Time of Our Lives only fell 9-11, which means the cluster of Blank Space and Take Me to Church fall 2 spots each. This also means Truffle Butter gets kicked off its peak 14-15, and its weakening sales and airplay mean it's no longer bulleting. -While Want to Want Me (27-17) is the flashy example, another song climbs into the top 20: Take Your Time (21-20). These boot Lips are Movin' (17-25) and I Don't Mind (19-28), both taking precipitous drops. -In general, this wasn't a good week for Meghan Trainor. While Shake it Off holds at #24, All About That bass crumbles 25-32, and Dear Future Husband did not gain the sales to match last week's streaming, resulting in a 47-55 tumble. -Post to Be surges for some reason 32-22. Aiding it are a #41 debut in sales and an 11-7 move on Streaming. -Following the first full week after music video launch, Throw Sum Mo blasts into the top 40 51-33. In addition, Homegrown climbs 41-36. These along with the top debut of B**** Better Have My Money (#23) kick off Jealous (38-41), Animals (35-42), and She Knows (36-46). -Quite a few sales gainers make the top 50 this week: Girl Crush (the top sales gainer, 95-45), Budapest (62-48), and Honey I'm Good (56-50). These along with the top debut and Throw Sum Mo kick out Lonely Eyes (50-52, but with a bullet, so the country spiral of death has not begun yet), No Type (49-X, recurrent), aforementioned Dear Future Husband, Chandelier (46-X), and Prayer in C (44-56). -Following sales gains, Worth It is up 78-58. Expect further movement once the music video fully impacts the chart. -Several debuts ended up much higher than I predicted: El Perdon, after making a 101-103 move last week, blasts onto the chart at #66. Following the viral video, Trouble debuts at #67. Hey Mama, following the release of its steamy lyric video, rockets in at #70. The latter two are also supported with sales, with Trouble at #25 and Hey Mama at #29. -To Pimp a Butterfly songs are now suffering the...butterfly effect (couldn't resist, but it makes no sense in all honesty). All of them are gone except for the new single, King Kunta (61-78). It could regain its footing now that the video is out. -After a decent sales debut, the return of Breaking Benjamin results in a #80 debut for Failure. -They stalled the past few weeks, but now, Where Are U Now (98-82), Bills (93-85), and She Don't Love You (97-86) are now ready to climb the charts! -Last week, as a result of the Butterfly, most of the debuts had crashed. Now that the dust has settled, they basically all came back: Little Toy Guns (#90), Diamond Rings and Old Barstools (#92), Bright (#93), and Wild Child (#98). -The debut of Action Bronson's album means that Baby Blue got enough hype to make a #91 debut. -Love You Like That debuts at #96, primarily from sales. -You Know You Like It, a 3 year old song, is now finally starting on the Hot 100 thanks to consistent performance with the DJ Snake collab/remix. -Eric Church now debuts his fifth single from last year's hit album The Outsiders: Like a Wrecking Ball (#100). -Dropping off this week along with recurrents and Butterfly songs are The Hanging Tree (#100), I Lived (#92), You're So Beautiful (#88), The Heart Wants What it Wants (#86, recurrent), Fairly Local (#84), and Mean to Me (#68, recurrent). -Interestingly, the scenario I presented last week did happen: I Bet My Life holds at #54 on its 21st week due to a bullet. Can it re-enter the top 50? -CANADA NEWS: As Time of Our Lives exits the American top 10, it finally enters the Canadian one in a 11-10 move. I'm an Albatraoz also remains stable, bulleting 9-8. Outside surges 19-12; could it kick Time of Our Lives off? As top sales gainer, Shut Up and Dance surges 30-16. Riptide continues its freakish longevity by recovering 17-13, its old peak. B**** Better Have My Money is the top debut here as well, but only to #29. No Way No is now a hit, moving 46-37. Booted from the top 40 are All of Me (39-41) and Pocket Full of Dreams (35-43). Surging from the music video launch is Want to Want Me, up 61-46. This and the top debut move Habits (50-X, Recurrent) and Dear Future Husband (49-57) off. -JAPAN NEWS (Overseas): Uptown Funk reclaims top overseas song in a 4-1 move (20-12). All About That Bass stumbles as such, but only 1-2 (10-15). I Really Like You remains strong in Japan, holding at #3 (13-16). Living for Love may have done strongly for an unexpected second week, but now it finally crashes 2-4 (11-33). Sugar finally makes the main top 40, also moving 6-5 on Overseas (43-40). I Want You to Know stumbles 5-6 but remains stable (42-45). Time of Our Lives enters in both charts at #7 and #64 respectively. Love Me Like You Do thus falls 7-8 (56-66). Shake it Off also falls 8-9 (58-71). Also debuting is Lay Me Down at #10 and #80 respectively. -UK NEWS: We appear to be finally getting back to normal; and by normal I mean #1 debuts that fall in one week. Well, the latter isn't known yet, but Jess Glynne's new single Hold My Hand tops on its first week. What it usurps, Lay Me Down (feat. John Legend), crumbles 1-6 now that Red Nose Day is far past. Hold Back the River could challenge for #1 next week; the slowly gaining track now moves 4-2 following the album launch. (In addition, If You Ever Want to Be in Love (#96, entry), Scars (#83, re-entry), and Let it Go (#57. re-entry) all represent the album) Booted from the top 10 is GDFR, which managed the zone in its first 2 weeks and now falls 7-11. (Speaking of 7 and 11, the song with those numbers re-enters this week at #100) Firestone is now burning up, moving 37-22. Notable debuts this week are Higher (#12), B**** Better Have My Money (#29), and Lamborghini (#30).

And it seems with the birth of this song, Chandelier must die. Literally been my favourite song since last April. Gone but never forgotten! RIP May 24th 2014 - April 11th 2015

Per "Candle in the Wind 1997", simply look at the other Elton John songs released during the 90s. Out of all of them (and there were SO many), only the Lion King theme and "The One" (barely) reached the top 10.
No way SATWYLT would have reached #1 if stand-alone.

Yes, a good indicator is radio. Although it was on the chart for a while, its peak position was #18

Candle was a fast burn-out, very somber and event-driven song. Something had AC and Hot AC traction. I'm amazed Candle did as well airplay-wise as it did.
I hated Billboard's then A-side / B-Side policy. That "Something" was listed first for 11 weeks was a travesty. This single - of any - should have been an exception to their rule.

I've fixed a few typos in my breakdown post and added info for Canada, UK, and Japan.
EDIT: I've now also updated some data thanks to Gary, including why Post to Be surged.

I think it was considered a commemorative item to have over anything. My mom bought the cassette single and CD single and she never bought CDs or music ever. Plus it was available everywhere, where music wasn't normally available. Not sure how that play into soundscan though.

Rightfully, Record Research credits "Candle in the Wind 97" with all weeks at No. 1. Because of the special circumstances of the single, it wasn't like the typical two-sided hit single, where tracks may have flip-flopped positions.

There can't be many Dutch artists who have had top ten hits? Shocking Blue, "Venus" (#1 in 1970) Golden Earring, "Twilight Zone" (#10 in 1983)

People keep talking about Trap Queen as if it's the worst song ever but I've listened to it few times and the worst thing about it is that it's bland and doesn't go anywhere. I'm not sure what makes it so hated and can only assume that people have such an aversion to "urban music" that when a song fitting that description without barely an ounce of pop-ness to it comes along and occupies a precious spot within the Top 10, there's a huge uproar from a particular group of people. Coincidentally (or not), the same people who will say the same thing when/if Bitch Better Have My Money reaches the Top 10. Maybe people just think both of them sound crap? Just an idea...

You can slice 'most successful song of all time' a hundred ways. Traditionally it's been based on weeks at #1 - and with UF! seemingly going further than any other song in recent memory - I checked chart authority Joel Whitburn's Record Research list based on the Hot 100.
Every week in the next month will be fascinating: Whitburn's stats are - short of Billboard - as official as you get, and more mathematical; He breaks ties at #1 by number of weeks in the top 10, then number of weeks top 40, and finally by number of weeks on the Hot 100.
If Mark / Bruno are number one next week, it will be for 14 weeks, tied with Whitney, Mariah, Elton, Boyz II Men, Los Del Rio and the BEP. BUT if Bruno is #1 next week and then stays in the top 10 through the May 23rd chart (6 more weeks - highly likely), it will officially be the #2 song of all time (based again on Whitburn's famous calculations), pushing ahead of Macarena and Mariah's 23 weeks.
Naturally if it peaks at 15 weeks, it will be the #2 song of all time.
If it gets to 16 weeks, but also stays in the top 10 for a total of 20 weeks (a given, based on its current 18 weeks), it will be the #1 song of all time. Naturally 17 weeks will need no qualifier (We'll have to go to the pre Rock era controversy over Francis Craig again)...

Wow, debuting and staying in the top for 16 WEEKS! Now that's impressive. The one and only... LEGEND!

Put that into some perspective. Under current rules One Sweet Day would not have debuted anywhere near #1. In those days you needed a single before being chart-eligible. In this case, there was a chart run of 6 weeks on radio before the "debut" because they held the single back while letting it build at radio.

There's nothing to put into perspective because we have no clue what that song would've done under today's rules and circumstances, so that's a moot point. Also, the song was released on Nov. 14th and debuted at #1 on Dec. 2nd...how is that 6 weeks?

The fact that OSD fell from No. 1 -> No. 5 isn't too surprising or unusual, though. Several long-lasting No. 1's fell straight out of the Top 3:
"I'll Make Love To You" fell No. 1 -> No. 4 "Macarena" fell No. 1 -> No. 4 "The Boy Is Mine" fell No. 1 -> No. 5 "Lose Yourself" fell No. 1 -> No. 9 "We Belong Together" fell No. 1 -> No. 4 "I Gotta Feeling" fell No. 1 -> No. 5

It debuted on Hot 100 airplay on Oct 21 1995 Yeah but could just be from radio wanting to play it, especially after the success of Fantasy. The official released was Nov. 14th.

Yeah and unlike UF, Mariah had a huge hit single beforehand and one after OSD(ABMB being played early) and the album was selling well. UF doesn't really have any of that. So it should continue to stay on top several more weeks without any major roadblocks in competition or current single/album from Bruno himself hindering it.
