Here in Denmark, "Don't Stop Believin'" is still an obscure song that virtually no one remembers. Glee was never huge here either.
But actually, being a highschool teacher, I would love to test my students on knowledge of pop classics. Could be interesting. I would bet that not one of my students would know either Don't Stop Believin' or One Sweet Day. I'm 100% certain that they virtually ALL know Lose Yourself, Thriller/Billie Jean, I Will Always Love You, etc.
Infact, I will do this. I'll make a list of songs and have my students tick which songs they absolutely know.

Journey are very American as a band.. DSB is pratically their only big hit in Europe and even that is mainly because of the use in pop culture in the noughties

no one's actually said it, but doesn't Glee deserve at lot of credit for making DSB "the" 80's classic of today? Yes, it does, and I'm surprised no one brought it up sooner. I'd like to see an All-Time Hot 100 that factors in the chart points it amassed over the decades Billboard made an attempt at this last year when they recalculated Year End Top 100 lists based on cumulative sales and airplay. There were some major changes; "Macarena" was bumped from the top of the '96 list by Sublime's "What I Got", "Don't Stop Believin'" replaced "Physical," "Sweet Home Alabama" replaced "The Way We Were," and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" knocked "Gangsta's Paradise" from #1 on the '95 tally.

It's possible (like the other day) they're super slow today w/ updates cause there's been like no changes in several hours.

That was 2008, Monster was 2003. Journey's Greatest Hits has been a consistent catalog seller since well before that. The Laguna Beach episode aired in 2005, the first time that DSB hit the top 10 on iTunes.

Ah, cool stuff about being able to survey groups of students! It does make me wonder, if ever a true "study" on this was created - what does it mean to really "know"/"remember" a song?
- to say "yes/no, I have/haven't heard of that" when someone mentions a song title - to be able to name a song's title when you hear a clip of it played - to be able to sing the song (well, the chorus at least) when someone mentions the title
I think the third (or possibly second) option would be the best test of someone really knowing a song. It's one thing to have heard OF a song ("Oh, the title 'Billie Jean' is familiar to me"), but another thing to actually be able to sing it (and I'm not talking about one's vocal abilities, just showing that you actually know how a song goes.) There's plenty of songs whose titles I would recognize from seeing them on the charts, but if I've never actually heard those songs, do I really know them?

I swear, "One Sweet Day" wasn't that big of a hit outside the US. I didn't become really into music until 2000/2001, and I remembered "Fantasy," "Honey", "Hero," and "My All" from childhood memories of the radio but not OSD.
In contrast, I remember I Will Always Love You, I Have Nothing, I Believe In You & Me, and My Love is Your Love

Memories are created by personal tastes and personal experiences as well. One song could mean everything to one person and nothing to the next.

Wow at "Uptown Funk!" barely decreasing in airplay today...I'm extremely anxious to see how many weeks UF ends up getting at #1...

I started watching the Hot 100 in 1990, and vividly remember "One Sweet Day" making it to 16 weeks. It was certainly a big deal, but honestly the song didn't feel *that* big even then. No doubt it was a huge hit, but it never really seemed bigger to me than "Fantasy". After those first few weeks on top there just wasn't much competition; Whitney's "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" had entered at #1 the week before OSD and held on to number two for 11 long weeks after that. LL Cool J's "Hey Lover" held behind those two songs for 8 weeks. Nothing was really breaking through until Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me" took off in March of '96. Had I not been a chart watcher, "One Sweet Day" (outside of the novelty of huge acts Mariah and Boyz II Men teaming up) wouldn't have seemed like nearly as big of a deal as other songs that year like "Waterfalls," "This Is How We Do It," "Fantasy," or "Gangsta's Paradise". Follow-up single "Always Be My Baby" seemed like it made more of a pop culture impact to me than OSD.
