Artist: Sam Hunt Single: "House Party" Writers: Sam Hunt, Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers Album: MontevalloLabel: MCA Nashville Add Date: June 1st, 2015 Chart Run: 49* - 39* - 27* - 24* - 20* - 16* - 16* - 13* - 12* - 9* - 8* - 5* - 3* - 2* - 1* - 5 - 7 (Mediabase) I've been told from my source at WYRK that "House Party" is the next single, which we've known for a while now, and rsmatto already mentioned it in the 'Take Your Time" thread. The Highway has been playing this for a few weeks now and it of course has already gotten picked up by 6 stations on the MB panel with more to come as 'Take Your Time" continues to lose audience and spins. I figured why wait since it seems so much of discussion in threads these days are about "what's the next single?" Lol

Song of the Summer right here. This is gonna be huge.
I like this quite a bit. It's the countriest production of his three singles so far and I've always liked Sam's vocals.

Love this one as well, definitely the most country-sounding of the three singles. Montevallo is pretty damn good.

I just can't get into this, hate how he screams in the chorus. The rest of Montevallo (be it country, pop or whatever you wanna call it) is pretty darn good though

Perfect choice. This album is so, so good, and this song is no exception. I'd be surprised if this didn't become another #1.

I also think this is gonna be huge and possibly the song of the summer as well. Since "Take Your Time" is apparently being promoted to CHR, I wouldn't mind them sending out a pop mix of this to CHR after TYT peaks there (I know, I know, the song is already pretty pop, but I think pop radio would want a version without some of the country instruments).

I love this song! One of my favorites on the album. Probably another #1 for Sam Hunt.

This is gonna be huge, and the absolute definition of a summer song. Feel-good tune.

This is my favorite of the 3 of his singles so far.
The thing I noticed is that Sam doesn't sound nearly as good singing this one as the others.
Also another note...my girlfriend (who is far less "YEAH COUNTRY!" than me) said that she feels this is less country than his other two and just sounds like a One Direction song and she "doesn't like it."
This one should do fine but will there be any resistance for a) another clearly not-country-in-any-way song from the same artist or b) a genre party overload?

Good choice for the 3rd single. I agree with everyone else that it should be a gigantic hit this summer, and will sound great at house parties across America. I really hope they go with "Speakers" for the 4th single, which will sound great in the fall time with tailgates and football season alive and kicking.

I like this, particularly the verses and the production (it actually has some semblance of country in there, even though it's still very poppy and modernized). That said, the chorus is odd to me, especially his vocals and the melody. I can see it growing on me, but I'm not quite feeling that chorus on first listen.

Nice choice by them! I wonder if there's a Sam Hunt thread in Artist Discussion, I can't find one

Well, this is the first Sam Hunt single I've enjoyed on first listen, but that isn't saying much. I agree that he gets very yelly during the chorus, but it's catchy. And at least he doesn't rhyme party with Bacardi gratuitously. I guess that's a win.

I have no idea how I like this. So far haven't been his biggest fan. The lyrics aren't terrible, but the production isn't country at all to me. I think the party theme is turning me off to this a little. It definitely could grow on me though.

This is easily his best single so far. I loved Leave the Night On too, but Take Your Time wasn't for me.
I love Ex To See, too.

I love this song as all his other tracks. Good choice, probably released to appease the claims of "He's not country!" but anyway, I hope this becomes a huge song so he can feel safe to release Ex To See as the final single. That would be cool!

I hadn't picked up on this one, but I enjoy it as a summer song. Would like to see two more releases, "Make You Miss Me" and "Break Up In a Small Town" (preferably some sort of country edit would be nice) then a move on from Montevallo. I have been surprised with how much I've liked his singles.

Disappointing choice.
The song is decent enough but I would have rather had him go with Make you Miss Me or Single for the Summer

"House Party" got 3 more adds this week, bringing it's total up to 9 stations and with "Take Your Time" done at #1, I fully expect an official announcement this week or by next Monday.
BTW: 2 of the 3 adds were KNIX in Phoenix, AZ and WJVC on Long Island, NY. Both stations are in the top 20 of market ranked stations.

I've never been a very good judge of what makes good pop music, but this is pretty catchy and will no doubt be a big smash. It seems pretty inevitable at this point that a Swift-like move to pop is coming at some point down the road for Sam, and all I can say is the sooner the better. Hunt is insanely talented, but he's just wasting airplay space that an actual country artist could be occupying. Sure he throws a few trace elements of country instrumentation out there, but the melody and overall rhythm don't even make a half-hearted attempt at country.

I don't see Sam Hunt moving to pop like Taylor Swift did. Taylor Swift is a mega-star and I don't see Sam Hunt ever reaching her status of selling a million copies of an album in its release week. As jhomes87 noted, the big difference between Sam Hunt and Taylor Swift is Swift's music had a high burn rate with country listeners, while Hunt's music so far hasn't shown this at all. I think Big Machine just realized country listeners aren't always too receptive to females and Taylor was starting to experience diminishing airplay success, so they figured she was only being held back by trying to stay on country radio. I don't see Sam Hunt struggling on the country charts anytime soon, so while I definitely expect a lot of crossover success I don't think he'll move away from country music and I would hate for country music to lose someone who is so popular at a time when country music is losing the younger demographics and sales and radio ratings are down. I really don't care what genre Sam Hunt's music fits in to. Good music is good music and I'm on board with whatever keeps country relevant.

I really don't care what genre Sam Hunt's music fits in to. Good music is good music and I'm on board with whatever keeps country relevant. That's the thing though, if country radio continues to keep spinning songs and artists with non-country elements, the genre won't really be actual country music anymore, and that's where the threat of fragmentation comes into play - which personally I don't really view as a good thing long term. The point of breaking music into genres is so each one has it's own uniqueness and sound that fit into that particular genre, but if country radio continues to try and appeal to the masses of cross-genre fans, then it'll will soon become just another version of top 40 radio, and the monotony will be uninteresting. I agree about Sam's music being good and he's very talented but I still don't believe it's country music in terms of melody and rhythm. Though as we've pointed out on this board before, country radio itself is a totally different animal. They're all about trying to reach demographics and people like Sam Hunt help them do so, and that's where the conflict comes into play. I know we've had this conversation before in the "Leave The Night On Thread" last summer, but I wonder exactly how long people like Sam Hunt keeps country radio "relevant." I think even if artists like Sam Hunt are able to keep this genre's popularity up, it may be something "other" than country music in the future, even if the name of the genre stays the same.

I think Big Machine just realized country listeners aren't always too receptive to females and Taylor was starting to experience diminishing airplay success, so they figured she was only being held back by trying to stay on country radio. Taylor went pop because she wanted to, not because Big Machine thought she'd be a better fit there. And really, the reason that many of Taylor's singles "burned" faster wasn't because of how they sounded like...it was because she's a female in a radio format where female voices are scarce. Some of Carrie's and Miranda's singles burn faster than the singles from their male counterparts as well. When Taylor was releasing music to country radio, she was similar to Shania at her peak, in that Taylor didn't go #1 with every single she released, but she was the biggest star of the genre nonetheless. And now she's the biggest star at pop radio. Taylor is just great at making music and connecting with her fans, and her music transcended genres, but I could see her making a country album again at some point. She's only in her mid 20's after all. Anyway, I'm not about to predict whether Sam Hunt will ever leave the country format behind, but for now I don't see why he would. I don't think his music is country--I like it, but I don't think it's country--but it doesn't matter what I think. Sam is red hot right now and country radio is all over his music, so I don't know why he'd suddenly up and leave for another radio format. Furthermore, he signed to a Nashville-based label...maybe that's because he never tried to get signed by any pop labels or maybe it's just that MCA Nashville could see his potential. I don't know if he was in talks with any other country or pop labels, but the fact that a Nashville-based label went out and got him says a lot, I think. As for "House Party", I really like it and I'm sure it'll be another big #1 hit for him, maybe his 3rd Platinum single in a row (and no country artists are having that many consecutive Platinum singles these days). It's just a really fun song. One other thing I'll say about Sam quick: a lot of artists today are always trying to push the envelope, but Sam might have an issue there since his music is already way on the pop side of the country-pop spectrum. In other words, it's hard for me to imagine Sam's future music getting any more pop and still finding a home on country radio.

It grew on me. That was a quick turn around for me. Sam Hunt has really good voice, which I never noticed before. I'm on the bandwagon, at least for this song.

Sam never had the intention of being anything but a country music singer. He loves pop and R&B music like other artists and people of the same generation but that wasn't what he wanted to record (at least as specific genres). Also, he once was turned down by nearly label in town (including BMLG) when he had a 'me too' image and sound. Only when he, Zach Crowell and Shane McAnally honed in on the sound we hear from him now did everything click and he went with the sound and look he has now (getting a manager who saw his potential to do something different didn't hurt either). He seems to be quite comfortable in the country genre. damn I wanted "breakup in a small town" As for the sales of his music, it's worth noting that "Break Up In A Small Town' has sold around 350k already without even being a single (I feel it is a crossover smash waiting to happen) and this means he'll likely have at least 2 more singles from this record, if he wants them (which would be 1/2 the album or 7/10 of it if you add "Raised On It" and "Cop Car" being singles before the album released ("Cop Car" by KU of course). I fully expect "House Party" to be a huge hit this summer and help guide the 'fickle' younger fans back to country radio this summer.
