Got another JS Code error after typing everything yesterday, and was in no mood to re-do it all.
#69 - Wild, Wild West - The Escape Club | 1988 | Living in the 80s, headed for the 90s.So here's some trivia I just learned. This is the only British band to hit #1 in the US without ever charting in the UK. The Escape Club were only slightly more successful after this hit. They would go on to have one more top ten hit before fading away completely. In the meantime, they left behind this gloriously late 80s song that gives some insight as to what people had on their mind in that era - there is mention of the big, "wild, wild hair" that was in fashion, there was the AIDS-fear fueled "safe sex" line, and the cold war fear is touched upon in the throwaway "waiting for the big boom" line. ALong the way, we get some Spanglish sort of rap and a bunch of gunshot sounds. There's a lot going on here!
#68 - Bulletproof - La Roux | 2010 | I'll never let you sweep me off my feetAn "I Will Survive" for the synthpop era, Bulletproof is another story of rejecting an ex who wants to get back together. This song has all the hallmark clicks and beeps and dancy grit to it that made songs popular a few years ago, and I was fully immersed (and still am) in that whole type of music. Lead singer Elly Jackson sounds perfectly bratty and just DONE with her ex in this song, which I think is why it appeals to me so much. Unfortunately, they are a one hit wonder in the US. They've released one album since just last year, but it came after the break-up of the duo, and was after multiple delays. Reduced to a solo act and Bulletproof five years in the past, the album unfortunately did not perform near the heights of the debut. Popstop's chart - #1 (2 weeks) - May 2010
#67 - Move Your Feet - Junior Senior | 2003 | I can't, can't, can't, can't control my feetSo, a couple quirky chart records on my chart with this one. First, the "Senior" of Junior Senior holds a claim to fame as the first openly gay person to hit #1. Plus I'm pretty sure they are the only Danish act to ever hit #1 on my chart. In 2003, this song made a little chart impact on the Hot 100, but in reality it stood out because it was so different. Dance music hadn't yet come back in the way it has in recent years, and with its horns and retro vibe, it was undeniably catchy. Popstop's chart - #1 (5 weeks) - May-June 2003
#66 - Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman | 1996 | I told you that I loved you and there ain't no more to say.Tracy Chapman's performs a master class in storytelling with this song. I've always constructed a scenario in my head, where when Tracy says "Give me one reason to stay here," "here" actually means a small town. It might be because that serves as a nice complement to her song "Fast Car," where she is desperate to leave the constrictive nature of small town life. That makes the drama all the more intense because the only reason she stays in town is for her partner, who is apparently not giving enough contribution for her to make a stay worth it. She ends with the finality that she loves him, that's it, and we're left hanging on whether she is going to get the reason or not. The implication for me is that she's going to have to reluctantly leave her partner because the pleas for a reason seem to go ignored. All that said, the "here" in that line likely just means "here" as in here in this relationship, in this life that's been built together. And I've heard that the final line is really her partner saying the only reason necessary is that she is loved. So the implication there is well, is just the love enough? So many layers to this song and Tracy brings the right emotion to it - the frustration of a non-communicative partner.
#65 - Thrift Shop - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz | 2013 | I'm like "Yo, that's fifty dollars for a t-shirt."Is there anyone who didn't hum along with the "pop them tags" line in this song? Macklemore flipped rap convention on its head by rapping about his brilliant thrift store savings rather than the typical rap boasts of Gucci and other high fashion. This song is very much of the recession zeitgeist of 2013, and he would go on to make his mark on the year with the gay rights anthem "Same Love." Popstop's chart: #1 (2 weeks) - March 2013
#64 - Hourglass - Squeeze | 1987 | takeittothebridge throwitoverboard seeifitcanswim backintotheshoreYah, no spaces in those lyrics because that's exactly how the chorus is sung - non-stop without taking a breath. This song opens with a blaring horn (yes, horns again - I told you I'm obsessed with them.) before lead singer Glenn Tillbrook starts with a litany of metaphors for frustration. Perhaps he should get together with Tracy Chapman and have a drink to discuss their respective lovers lack of communicative skills. If that is what the problem is - the song really just describes being frustrated with a situation that can't be changed. This song was Squeeze's biggest hit, and came up after the band had split up and reformed a few years earlier.

Really enjoy your last batch from 65-69, particularly the Tracy Chapman song.
It's more or less a well crafted blues song. The guitars wail along as Tracy is searching for one reason to stick around. Other than that last stanza, it's these verses that hit the hardest.
This youthful heart can love you, yes, and give you what you need I said, This youthful heart can love you, oh, and give you what you need But I'm too old to go chasing you around Wasting my precious energy
Not sure if the ending comes on a high note (love is enough to stick around) or not, but I think it's up to you to decide for yourself whether she does or not.

Ditto everyone on Give Me One Reason. That was in my favourites of the 90s so clearly we agree.
Also love Move Your Feet. Underappreciated dance gem. Lately I've been missing 2003 music.

It's a more recent set of songs today. Some songs here that really touched my life. :)
#63 - Grenade - Bruno Mars | 2011 | Tell the devil I said "hey" when you get back to where you're from.Bruno Mars filled in a much needed gap with his pop success this decade. There hadn't been a lot of male pop vocalists in the preceding decade. I'm not sure why that is - were people just done with the boy band groups, and just rejected everything remotely boyish in pop? I'm not sure, but once Bruno Mars had his 3rd #1 with this song, he was clearly headed for superstar status. Now some of the lyrics are a little over the top (She's going to cut the brakes on your car? Really, Bruno?), but overall, I lvoe the masochistic vibe Bruno's got going here - and he sings with the conviction of a man who loves someone who he knows he shouldn't. Popstop's chart - #2 (2 weeks) - January 2011
Additional songs to chart: Runaway Baby #1 (2 weeks) - September 2011 Uptown Funk - #1 (3 weeks) - November - December 2014
#62 - Take Your Mama - Scissor Sisters | 2004 | We'll get her jacked up on some cheap champagneWow, I don't know where to begin with how personal this song was for me. At the time this was charting, I had started my senior of high school and had just learned my girlfriend was pregnant, and I was still contending with trying to process my sexuality. And here we have a song about a boyfriend wishing he could get his man to come out to his mother - a man who was ready to get married before it all fell apart. It all hit so close to home. Popstop's chart - #1 (7 weeks) - September-November 2004
Additional Songs to chart: I Don't Feel Like Dancin' - #1 (4 weeks) - September-October 2006
#61 - Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb | 1990 | You might still see them in the desertSo, Ricki Lee Jones had an interview where she talked about the beautiful clouds that she would view growing up in her native Arizona, and ambient group The Orb made an entire instrumental around that one piece of the interview. At the time, raves were often conducted outdoors and so a song about clouds would have fit right in - grooving and dancing under the sky. I just love how the music amplifies the words - I can almost see the images of the clouds swirling and moving about in my head.
#60 - This Love - Maroon 5 | 2004 | I have no choice cause I won't say goodbye anymore.Maroon 5 has long been a favorite and it all started with this song - even back in 2004, Adam Levine was working the sex appeal if you check the video. This Love was their second top 20 single and first major hit, peaking in the top five in early 2004. They would go on to hit the top ten another dozen times over the following years - today they've hit the stratosphere of superstardom, especially Adam, but back then, they weer another band, but one with an attractive and vocally talented lead singer. His vocal is stellar on this - you can tell he is done giving in starting and restarting this relationship - and that there is finality in ending it this time. Popstop's chart - #1 (3 weeks) - May 2004
#59 - Put the Gun Down - ZZ Ward | 2013 | Oh, Adeline, have mercyZZ Ward is an artist I wish would find greater success. She has an album available for pre-order at her web site coming out very soon. She's beautiful, has a sexy, bluesy voice, and can really sell a song. That's exactly what she does here - pleading with Adeline not to take her life, much less steal her man. It's kind of Jolene-esque, where ZZ knows Adeline could easily take her man with her perfect body. Really, I'm not sure why the hell Adeline needs a gun - sounds like she could do just fine on her own. In any case, the desperation and fear communicates in this song is palpable and real. Popstop's chart: #1 (5 weeks) - November-December 2013
#58 - Always - Atlantic Starr | 1987 | Ooh, you're like the sun chasing all of the rain away.I guess this will serve as our token 20th century song today. This was the song that my sister and her husband danced to when they got married in 2001. I was not quite 14, but I still remember this song as clear as day. My sister had chosen one of her bridesmaids to sing the song (she had a great voice) and I can still visualize their supreme happiness today. Yes, they are still married. :) It really is the perfect song for getting married. I decided to go for their performance on Solid Gold for the link on this one - haha!

I love Take Your Mama when it was out too. It was out during the time of my life that I was happiest at that point but also in looking back probably the period of time I miss most but I also remember the song having associations with my own coming out as well. I was in my first relationship and still coming to terms with being gay, but the part that concerned me the most was how I was going to tell my parents - or if I was ever going to tell them. I think this song for me was like... what it would be like if everything was fine and like, taking my own mother out and showing her how happy I was.

I'm back after taking a three day weekend to enjoy the hot summer sun :)
#57 - Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer | 1986 | Oblivion is all you crave. You know how some songs have a part in them that you love above the rest of the song? For me, it's the stifled growl right at the beginning - as if he can't hold his accusations in any longer. I think the appeal of this song is in it's sexual fantasy fulfillment - a partner who's mind is so addled by sex that it's their only focus, which means their only focus is you. It offers the one line that indicates some strong-minded resistance, but really, Robert lets you know that's just a front. The iconic video in a way both complements and detracts from the lyrics - they sway out of synch dispassionately, so they run counter to the "love" part of the title, but also definitely seem zombified, as if under an addiiitve spell.
#56 - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) - En Vogue | 1992 | I give to the needy and not the greedy!Oh my. So there was a go-go boy at a bar here who used to frequently use this song as part of his set list. And one time, when he came around for tips, I asked if there was some "truth in advertising" he was implying by selecting that song. The story takes a pretty carnal turn from there, so I will just end it at that point. :) Anyhow, lame sex stories aside, En Vogue was part of that whole fad-that-desperately-needs-to-come-back-right-now, the awesomely harmonizing R&B girl group. Their voices blended so seamlessly and their fashion sense was so classy, especially in their slinky fringe dresses, that I wonder when we'll see the likes of an act like them again. .
#55 - Doesn't Remind Me - Audioslave | 2005 | I like gospel music and canned applauseTen years ago this month, I was wrapping up my first semester of college, and my ex-girlfriend was moving away to go to college herself. We had spent the summer with our new son, and while the break-up was not especially painful, transitioning to becoming a single parent was. I think this song captured some of the swirling emotions I had then - I was burning out on managing an infant, going to school, and working that I just felt nothing at the end of the day. This song speaks to some of that - this idea of trying to move on from something painful by replacing it with distraction after distraction. As for Audioslave, they would release one more album after this single came out, before breaking up themselves. Popstop's chart - #1 (6 weeks) - August - September 2005
#54 - The Sign - Ace of Base | 1994 | Life is demanding without understanding.OK, well, we have a break-up song that doesn't really sound like one. The person has long moved past the relationship's end, and she is reflecting on how she knew it wouldn't work out. So, there's that. But can we talk about the perfect reggae-pop integration that makes up the drum beat, or the oddly appealing wail tone that backs the verses? Tell me you haven't busted out some strong karaoke with this song in one of your private moments.
#53 - Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke ft. Pharrell & T.I. | 2013 | What rhymes with hug me?Look, I know what a hot mess this song has become in reflection - the accusations of misogyny, the blatant cribbing from Marvin Gaye, and Robin's own fucked up love life resulting in his desperate Paula album a year later. So that's a lot to get past, but I can't get past the fact that this song WAS my summer two years ago - I heard it everywhere, and loved the old school vibe and plain goofy fun with the three men trading lyrics off one another. Robin's falsetto is still note-letter perfect, and the percussion is on point. It's become the poster child of songs you hate to love. Popstop's chart: #1 (8 weeks) - July-August 2013
#52- Birdhouse In Your Soul - They Might Be Giants | 1991 | Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch.I'm 100% positive that this is the only ode to a nightlight to ever hit the charts. While it's a goofy premise for a song, TMBG makes all sort of delightful references in the song. For example, the nightlight mentions that it hangs across from a picture of a lighthouse, and feels thankful that its job is merely to comfort - not go out at the wrong time, killing thousands of Argonauts in the process. Anyhow, it's a bizarre little song when you consider the lyrics, but it's not like TMBG were by no means unknown for their strange lyrics. Even recently, they have composed similarly silly educational songs for children.

We've made it to the top 50! We've got a couple heavy songs in the list today!
#51 - No You Girls - Franz Ferdinand | 2009 | You dirty boys'll never care. This is a rollicking dance-type rock song that apparently inspired by a first kiss. It's a really clever song - the story starts awkwardly with the narrator telling the girl how he thinks he "loves" - no, wait thinks he "would love to get to know" her. By the second lyrics, he's completely confused - "you know that I know that I love you" - no, wait - "I mean I need to love," so it's no wonder that girls don't understand what is going through a guy's head. The terrific conclusion turns this all on his head though - at the break - he realizes he is acting and saying stupid things, and comes to the conclusion that he is the worse off of the pair because he simply doesn't stop to consider the girl's feelings. On their album, there's another song called "Katehrine Kiss Me," a mature, slower paced look at the same situation - now we know her name - the duo have matured. Popstop's chart - #1 (2 weeks) - October 2009
#50 - Casa - Natalia y la Forquetina | 2006 | Voy a cocinar un postreThis is an adorable light pop song, where Natalia fantasizes about life with her partner and making a happy home. She's so happy she's making apple desserts and spoiling her man. The bridge is probably the meatiest part of this song where she confesses that her house is merely paper - a mere fantasy, and she feels the love is fragile. The song practically percolates with Natalia Lafourcade's bubbly voice and lounge style percussion. Popstop's chart - #1 (3 weeks) - January-February 2006
#49 - Problem - Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea | 2014 | I think I love the thought of you more than I love your presenceEvery now and then, I hear a song that from the first listen, I know I'm going to love forever. Problem blasted out of the gate on my chart at #1, and quickly moved to #1 a week or two later. What was it that entranced me? Was it the funky horns? The Mimi-esque vocal? The iggy iggy too biggy rap? This song had practically no burn rate as well into this year it was still a regular part of my playlist. I'm pretty sure I would kill at karaoke with this song. Popstop's chart - #1 (5 weeks) - May-June 2014
Additional songs to chart: Bang Bang - #1 (4 weeks) - August 2014
#48 - (Don't You) Forget About Me - Simple Minds | 1985 | As you walk on by, will you call my name? This song is inextricably tied to the movie The Breakfast Club, which at thirty years old, is still pretty spot on with its sympathetic treatment of adolescents. I think it should be required viewing for any teenager. Since that movie is almost completely set in one room, the focus is on discussion, which is the song's focus as well - it's all about talking things out, getting to know one another intimately, and the ending is pure gold - will you walk on by or call my name? It's a perfect complement to the movie where the characters seem to know full well that they may not acknowledge each other in school come Monday morning despite a full day of heavy bonding simply because their clique won't allow it.
#47 - Last Resort - Papa Roach | 2000 | It all started when I lost my motherGood lord, what a dark song. I didn't even know how dark it was - I was just turning 13 at the time, and starting to dive deep in all the adolescent drama that comes with those years. So anything sounding angry and rough felt right to me. But this is a song about a guy at the end of his rope - contemplating methods of suicide, thinking about what got him to such a point of despair, and crying out for someone to save him from the downward spiral. The narrator terrifyingly finds no relief from his pain. Popstop's chart: #1 (1 week) - August 2000
#46 - Superman (It's Not Easy) - Five For Fighting | 2001 | Even heroes have the right to bleed. This is the second song on the list that brings me back to the atmosphere after 9/11. I know a lot of people associate Enya's "Only Time" with that period, but this piano-laden, downbeat song ostensibly about the frustrations of being Superman brings me back just as much. However, it's not about superman per se; in fact, its sentiment fit in well in the weeks following 9/11 - the helplessness of not being able to prevent the tragedy, the expectations on men to be strong during the crisis, the frustration and anger that culminated in war. The song is about the burdens men face in society - avoiding emotion, focusing on work, and the lowered expectations for men to be there for family. Popstop's chart - (2 weeks) - November-December 2001

We're starting to close to diva territory here as Shakira shows up, plus the lone appearance of a metal band.
#45 - Mercy - Duffy | 2008 | Why won't you release me?I have one friend who refers to Duffy as a low-rent Amy Winehouse, which is completely fair. Duffy would never have had success with this song if not for Amy, I'm sure of that. It's a similar vibe to Amy's throwback wall of sound - and the video directly addresses it complete with 60s hair style and dance moves. But all that aside, I still love this song - I love the coo when Mercy belts out "Yes, I do!" and the breathy "yeah"s that open the song. As far as Duffy herself, she had an abrupt ending to her career. She released an album at the tail end of 2010 that failed to live up to expectations. Her first single peaked outside the top 40, and no further singles were released. She has yet to release another album. Popstop's chart - #2 (4 weeks) - March-April 2008
#44 - Kiss Them For Me - Siouxsie and the Banshees | 1991 | On the road to New Orleans, a spray of stars hit the screenIf you look hard enough in the games section, you'll see a Danger Zone game for the top alternative songs of all time. This song came in #2 in that game, mainly because of me. It's one of my favorites with lyrics that seem to paint strange lyrics about a party girl, but these lyrics are all in reference to Jayne Mansfield - from her rise to fame and her heart-shaped pool to her horrible death in a car accident. Jayne Mansfield may be better known today as Mariska Hargitay's mom, but in the 1950s, she was more of a poor man's Marilyn. Siouxsie Sioux was apparently sufficiently fascinated to write a whole song around her, and we are the better for it - the music, oddly, has a mid-Eastern vibe, and Siouxsie imbues the entire song with a sense of foreboding and danger. It ended up being Siouxsie & the Banshees' biggest hit in the US. They were near the end of a long career when this hit and would go on to release their last album in 1995.
#43 - With or Without You - U2 | 1987 | You gave it all, but I want more.U2's most successful hit, this song firmly entrenched U2 in the national consciousness for years to come. I'm not sure which to highlight more - the music, the lyrics, or Bono's delivery. As far as the latter, let's talk about the dynamics of the song - with a slow, sensual, hushed delivery as the song works through the first verse, to the outright power of the anguished yells at the end. The lyrics indicate a conflicted relationship in which Bono doesn't seem to know what he wants - he doesn't seem to know what to ask from his partner, and yet he understands this, by telling his partner "you give yourself away, and you give, and you give, and you give." It's a dark, brooding song with an unclear resolution.
#42 - She-Wolf - Shakira | 2009 | Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropyFirst of all, I am pretty confident the word lycanthropy is never going to be worked in a song's lyrics again with such success. Second of all, only Shakira could pull off the word with perfect aplomb. This disco-latin song burned up the charts in 2009, stopping frustratingly short of the top 10. Shakira has been a favorite on my chart, topping my chart four times (including just three months ago), and I think it is because there has been nothing like her - she brings smart lyrics, an ability to successfully infuse her Latin sensibility into her music, with a truly unique voice. And isn't she beautiful? ---> This song had an unusual chart run: 10-6-6-3-2-9-3-1-1-1-1-9-9-10-10-2-3-5-5-2-8 charting from July to December. Popstop's chart - #1 (4 weeks) - September 2009
Additional Songs to Chart: Whenever, Wherever - #1 (4 weeks) - January 2001
#41 - La Bamba - Los Lobos | 1987 | Necesita una poco de graciaLa Bamba was the last song completely in a foreign language to top the charts. (The Macarena somewhat counts, but the remix that brought it to #1 is pretty English heavy.) It did so on the strength of a movie about Richie Valens, whose version of this song originally charted in 1958. That version appeared on the back of Richie's biggest hit,a song called Donna, which hit #2. It would be nearly 30 years before Los Lobos would go all the way to the top in the summer of 1987. You almost never hear this song on the radio, but the rare time I have, the local oldies station will fade out the song before it reaches what is by far the best part of the song - the true fade out of mariachi guitar playing that fills up your ears as if you were in a cantina.
#40 - Enter Sandman - Metallica | 1991 | It's just the beasts under your bed, in your closet, in your head. The whole metal movement of the 1980s and early 90s is almost completely ignored on my list, with this one exception. And I'm not really sure why I like this song, or why it seems to be the only one that can bring out the headbanger in me. Maybe it's the whole sinister sandman thing that delights me - sometimes, when I sing this one, I get a chuckle thinking of what this would be like to sing to my son before bed. Perhaps it's the whole assumption of nightmares - that sleep isn't the blissful state it appears to be. It could be that it's just melodic enough to work for me, but whatever it is, it's a lot of fun.

Now that we have hit the top 40 songs, let's take another break for honorable mentions :)
Once again, one from each decade:
80s: Invisible - Alison Moyet (1985)
90s: All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow (1994)
00s: When It's Over - Sugar Ray (2001)
10s: Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen (2012)
