I'll be quite sad if this doesn't eventually reach the top 10...it already somehow exited iTunes top ten :( it better return there soon! and I hope you're right about Bad Blood being #1! also it was Shazam, not Spotify that predicted Cheerleader to be #1 though regardless it does seem like Shazam could be right after all - Cheerleader is already less than 2% behind the combined Bad Blood on iTunes :O

Lean On is a great song. Can't believe it hasn't blown up yet.

Quirky chart fact -- if Bad Blood does go back to #1, this would be Taylor's 3rd single to have its stay at #1 interrupted (after WANEGBT and SIO). Very quirky. lol. Makes sense tho. She's so huge that her singles sell a ton off the bat, then radio catches up...

Lean On is a great song. Can't believe it hasn't blown up yet. Yeah it's getting pretty meh updates in airplay (not bad ones but could still be better definitely)...I'm glad at least The Weeknd's new song is getting pretty good updates! EDIT: maybe it's just that today's updates are abismal in general hence Lean On didn't get a big gain today, idk

"Lean On" has definitely been bigger overseas, but "Cheerleader" is the real global mega-smash that the US needs to embrace ;) (and we're getting there, since it's the No. 1 track on iTunes and close to outselling BB.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheerleader_(song)

Nothing will ever compare to "Hung Up" though I know this was 10 years ago, but I still find it funny.

Nothing will ever compare to "Hung Up" though **Sigh** F**kin' radio. It was a multi-week No. 1 on Hot Digital Songs, but sales weren't big enough then to compensate for its low airplay, and US radio certainly wasn't goin to embrace a dance track by a 40+ female in 2005.

^I mean, it still hit #5 in Finland and #7 in the USA, but it would've been amazing if it had hit #1 in every country with a singles chart.

The US is just slow, as usual We're usually slow here haha. I remember a few years ago Somebody That I Used To Know only blew up in the US after blew up everywhere else. I'm pretty sure there's many more examples but I can't think of any right now.

I know there are examples of songs that blew up everywhere INCLUDING Canada long before they blew up in the USA but I also can't think of them on the spot. Perhaps Sexy And I Know It? I know it first reached #1 in Canada in September 2011 IIRC. Also Counting Stars possibly. Call Me Maybe was for sure a hit almost half a year before becoming one in the USA (I think it even made #1 in Canada before it even debuted on the USA Hot 100)

What about the other way around? Any songs blow up in the US before becoming global hits?

What about the other way around? Any songs blow up in the US before becoming global hits? Presumably a lot of hip-hop songs (I mean the ones that do eventually blow up elsewhere)

The reason Lean On has been rising slowly has been due to radio struggling to embrace it. It's not really like anything that's out there right now (OK, maybe also You Know You Like It, but that song may have peaked on radio already). It's made the top twenty due to streaming and sales, to a lesser extent. I think Lean On has still some room to grow and could end up in the top 10 when all is said and done. Cheerleader is a future number 1. Still gaining 2-3 million spins daily (I presume that's what those charts are about) and combined with the declines in Uptown Funk (expected) and Want to Want Me (surprised), I can't see why this wouldn't reach #5 this week.

CMM was a bit different, since it wasn't even released in the US until late February 2012. I don't think there were plans to release/promote it in the US at all until Bieber intervened.
"When Love Takes Over" always comes to mind during discussions like this. Top 10 virtually everywhere in the world, with many No. 1 placings - except Canada (No. 22) and the US (No. 76.) Dance music was certainly "in" at that point (this was the year of Gaga, BEP, etc. - which I know weren't quite the same as WLTO, but it's not like it was released in the '03-'05 US music scene), so I'm not sure why we completely gave that the cold shoulder.

Katy Perry - Dark Horse USA was the 1st country for that song to reach Number 1 in It would've peaked in Australia first (in late 2013) had it been allowed to chart

Lean On, Cheerleader, and Fight Song all deserve a chance at #1! See You Again needs to fall off the top. If those three songs can't go #1, at least let Bad Blood go #1.
