Any indication of what the next single will be? I love both Heartbeat and Runaway.

[why would they submit both LTG and SB for everything] It makes sense to submit both in the Song categories because there are different writers, and I am sure all want a chance. I don't get sending both to Country Solo at all, though. Since it's a special committee that chooses the final Grammy nominations in the country field from among the top fifteen or twenty vote-getters in each of the country categories, I think the challenge will be getting either one of Carrie's songs in that top group of fifteen or twenty this year. If one of Carrie's songs does make that group, then given Carrie's Grammy history, I like her odds of making the nominations. Personally, "Little Toy Guns" is among my favorite Carrie songs ever and I absolutely love its central metaphor, so I'm with 14887fan in hoping that it's the Carrie song that gets through. This is incorrect. There is a committee that does selects the nominees in the big 4 - Album, Record, Song, New Artist - from a (I believe) the top 20. All voters vote on those categories, so the committee is then paring it down. They do not do this for the genre categories, though.

I'm genuinely stunned by how beautiful it is. I'm so, so impressed. I really expected this song to be a cheese-fest, but it's actually incredibly authentic and almost...haunting? The instrumental almost gives it a storybook wedding/sultry lullaby feel, and her vocal is amazingly subdued and soothing. Also the BGV are unreal. Angelic. Like...it could be a single. It's that good. Granted, we haven't heard nine of the other songs so that statement could change, but it would easily go #1.
Also, "Renegade Runaway" is still climbing on iTunes, now at #55.

All voters vote on those categories, so the committee is then paring it down. They do not do this for the genre categories, though. Actually, I had verified what I posted about country Grammy nominations late last year (as posted here), and you can verify it for yourself at this Grammy Pro link, whose infographic confirms that it's not only the General Field categories whose final nominations are selected by a committee from among the top vote-getters, but also nominations in the following genre fields: American Roots, Children's, Classical, Country, Dance/Electronic, Gospel/CCM, Jazz, Latin, Music Video, R&B and Rock. The genre fields whose nominations directly reflect the top five vote-getters (with no committee involvement) are: Alternative, Comedy, Contemporary Instrumental, Musical Theater, New Age, Pop, Rap, Reggae, Spoken Word, Traditional Pop, Visual Media and World Music. The fact that the Grammy country nominations have often, at least in recent years, featured a balance between music achieving mainstream success and music that hasn't impacted at country radio is, I think, a reflection of a deliberate effort by the nomination review committee for the field. Dudles, can we hear your thoughts on the new songs? :) Hi Stephen, nice to see you back around here for the start of a new album cycle! Both "Heartbeat" & "Renegade Runaway" show the lyrics in Carrie's songs getting more visual and also more efficient. That was something from Blown Away that I very much wanted Carrie to build on, so it makes me optimistic for the rest of the album (like Typo, I had probably been most "worried" about "Heartbeat" given the songwriters). "Heartbeat" shows Carrie's market savvy -- it is geared directly to what's working at country radio right now (both in terms of R&B inflections and in terms of romance -- see the fact that the top two country digital sellers right now are Thomas Rhett's Ed Sheeran rip-off and one of Luke Bryan's loverman ballads). "Heartbeat" doesn't reinvent the wheel with its imagery, but it is well-constructed and the lyrics have more personality than the typical Luke/Thomas Rhett fare. I feel like Carrie's vocal lags slightly behind the beat in the first verse (could be wrong), but her sultry delivery on the second verse is incredibly effective. I also like the development from "Heartbeat"'s first verse (which does a lot of work in illustrating that the singer is in a relationship with the person she's singing to and in laying out their conversation, as several people have already pointed out) to the second (which illustrates in a suggestive way what she's looking for that particular night). That said, "Heartbeat" is not terribly interesting (or interestingly produced) -- which is fine, not every song has to be, but I think with Carrie, there's this sense and expectation that she can come hard with material that really only she can deliver, material that will disrupt the market. But again, "Heartbeat"'s inclusion on the album is smart -- most of Carrie's singles for the past three years have gone against the grain at country radio, and I think that country radio would be relieved to have a single like this from her. The inclusion of Sam Hunt on background vocals may be the by-product of smarts, too (whether Zach Crowell's or Carrie's or both), but I'm grateful that no one involved turned it into a cheap "featuring..." "Heartbeat" is not a duet -- it's a song with one point of view (Carrie's), and the recent country trend of crediting recognizable background vocalists with full features is little more than a thirsty grab at Vocal Event nominations. Carrie herself hasn't demanded features when singing background vocals on songs by Brad Paisley and the Swon Brothers, so she is being consistent here. Moreover, the fact that the song isn't a full-on feature may have a practical purpose: if it were a full-on feature, Sam's label MCA Nashville may have been able to influence the timing of its release to radio (see: "Smokin' & Drinkin'," whose release as a Platinum single was delayed by Little Big Town's release of "Girl Crush" as the second Pain Killer single). But all told, it's a win-win -- it's a nice feather in Sam Hunt's cap that he's on Carrie's album in a singing role and Carrie reaps extra buzz and sales from his inclusion. For those of us looking for signature Carrie standouts, the kind that can define album cycles, "Renegade Runaway" comes closest of the three songs we've heard so far. It has the intensity and that combination of multi-genre musicality with country lyrics that really set Carrie apart in today's market. It was running through my head for a while this morning -- the pre-chorus is especially catchy. It was a bit of adjustment for my ears (especially in light of Carrie's talk of a twangier, more traditional-leaning album) to hear something so dance-able at the get-go, and I do think there are touches in Jay Joyce's production that are more pop than I would personally prefer (the biggest being the way he handles the background vocals, as opposed to Carrie's relatively raw lead vocal). But overall, the production pulses in a pretty irresistible way without distracting from Carrie's dynamic vocal, and I can't help but think of what a great concert opener the song's going to make -- the energy from that intro is going to be something else. I have a feeling my opinion of "Renegade Runaway"'s lyrics is going to improve after I hear the album, though I like them well enough already for their thematic consistency and vividness. The song feels like an introduction to a character, but unlike "Cowboy Casanova" and "Good Girl," which are easily digestible as warnings to females about no-good, deceiving cads, the "Renegade Runaway" is defined by more than her romantic dalliances -- there's an attitude, a history, a particular look. I think that's all interesting (and unusual in this market), but if there's something "Renegade Runaway" is missing lyrically, it's a story, or at least context for the character and why Carrie was moved to write and sing about her. From what we've heard about other songs from the album, I think they may provide that context. So along the lines of what desertfloods said upthread, I'm quite liking what we've heard so far in all three songs, but I think what I'm still looking for is the signature Carrie song (or songs) that will help define her canon anew with something completely fresh. I realize this is an impossibly high standard, but it's out of respect for what I think Carrie can do -- I think she has in her music (present and future) that is disruptive not only in the context of today's country market, but that can stand the test of time in the country world. So I like "Smoke Break" for its twangy Southern rock feel and its attention to adults with responsibilities -- it stands out in the current market for not chasing youth and trends, and it feels very true to who Carrie is, but I don't think it stands out as much when we take '90s country into consideration. I like "Heartbeat" for being Carrie's more fully-realized-than-typical-current-country version of rural romanticism and again for being true to who Carrie is, but as a piece of music, it still feels very tied to the current time in mainstream country. "Renegade Runaway" comes closest so far to what I'm looking for from this new music, as already noted, but I feel like Carrie has even more in her in terms of progression of narrative and sound (and, to be honest, I would prefer music that sounds more country). All that said, the three songs together do make me optimistic that Storyteller is going to deliver what I'm looking for in terms of growth and distinction in Carrie's music. Looking forward to hearing the full album! Naturally, there is now a new song to listen to now that I've gone on at length about the other pre-release tracks. I'm always behind!

The production on "WINKIAW" isn't as sappy as I expected, which is cool, but I'm not sure I love it. I haven't been blown away by any of the songs yet (no pun intended). I think I need to stop listening to these songs as they leak because it sounds like this project is meant to be heard as a whole.

WINKIAW is another fantastic track from Storyteller.. It has this peaceful sound and so refreshing. I thought we;re going to get Forever Changed-ish kinda song (which i also love), but we got a different sound from Carrie.
Loving all the tracks from Storyteller so far.
Out of the 4 songs we have so far, Smoke Break is the weakest IMO... I still can't get over RR.

Ranking the songs so far for me:
WINKIAW Heartbeat RR SB
.... Not loving RR as much as I'd like, but I'm definitely more into Carrie's ballads... that's likely why. But I still can appreciate RR for its overall amazingness! It's just not a song I see myself going back to other then when I play the album through. As for "Smoke Break", I can see why it was the lead single, but of the bunch we've heard, it's easily the least impressive one overall --- which says a lot, because I love "Smoke Break"!

There's something really effective about "What I Never Knew I Always Wanted"'s plainspoken lyrics. I'm getting a slight Celine Dion vibe from the melody & production. That's not my preferred sound for Carrie, but it works given the subject mater.
I think it's cool that the album begins with the legend of the Renegade Runaway, a woman who can't be tied down, and ends with Carrie declaring "Never was the kind to think about dressing in white / I never pictured myself singing lullabies."

On Oct. 22, there's going to be a replay of Carrie's Sept. 10 Jimmy Fallon appearance (with Andy Samberg) where she was interviewed and performed Smoke Break. So far, there's very few appearances with dates for release week that we've been able to confirm. I expect the promo list on Monday, the same day when the embargo on album reviews will be lifted.
October 22- iHeart album launch (no official announcement yet; confirmed from ticket contest) 22- *replay* Jimmy Fallon (NBC) 23- Today Show (NBC) 27- Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC) (no official announcement yet; confirmed from ticket site)
November 4- CMA Awards (ABC) 5- Project Runway Finale (Lifetime)
December 6- Sinatra 100-- An All-Star Grammy Concert (CBS)
Spying on Carrie's competition, 5 SOS will be on Ellen Oct. 23rd but not the whole show; Oprah is the other guest. Andrea Bocelli will be on Live w/ Kelly & Michael Oct. 28th.

Oh wow, I just listened to WINKIAW. Truly perfect album closer (I will forgive her for Who Are You now, lol). Her best closer since I Ain't in Checotah Anymore. Wheel of the World was amazing as well. WINKIAW is so simple and beautiful, especially the melody. I love it!! Was afraid it might be a cheesefest as well. And from all four tracks, what stands out to me the most are the production/instrumentation choices. They are all FANTASTIC! Bright did great here, and I am especially glad that Joyce came onboard! Ranking the songs so far for me: WINKIAW Heartbeat RR SB Same ranking for me too! ETA: WINKIAW on repeat, even with such LQ version. Can't wait for it to be on Spotify!

Carrie's CMT Instant Jam is on CMT right now! I saw the "sneak peek" in the morning and thought it was going to be something different, but they were the same. I guess "sneak peek" just meant an early airing. Weird. Anyway, Carrie sounded great and the venue looked great, but it felt like a rock concert. I saw Little Big Town live on Friday night, and it was definitely more of a rock concert. I wish true country instrumentation would make a comeback.

I read on Facebook that today is the 10th "birthday" of "Jesus, Take the Wheel". Can anyone confirm this? Wikipedia has October 3rd listed as the release date, but I could have sworn it was released later than that. Either way, I know it was October... So, happy 10th birthday, JTTW!!!

WINKIAW is easily my favorite of the 4 tracks thus far, and I have enjoyed all of them. Wow is all I can say. Absolutely stunning, gorgeous song. The music, the melody, just wow. Carrie's voice tells the story here like never before in my opinion. You can definitely hear the sincerity in her voice and can tell how much this song means to her.
Friday cannot get here fast enough after hearing that one.
