I, too, would be down for "Don't Forget to Remember Me" and "Just a Dream." I'm assuming there will be plenty of tracks from Storyteller performed, but if she were able to work in some of her pre-2009 album cuts, that would be ideal for me. "Get Out of This Town," "Some Hearts," "You Won't Find This," etc. I know the last one is a long shot, but I can wish!

The Storyteller vinyl is really pretty. Have any pictures? Full lyrics of songs in the gatefold, under each title, songwriting credits, etc. Thank You's. Etched art on side D of the 2nd LP, no audio but the vinyl is designed. Very well done.

"Smoke Break" was ranked at #19 on Rolling Stone's Top Country Songs of 2015.

Here's the link to the Rolling Stone blurb on "Smoke Break," which is written by someone who is generally not a fan of her music (he leans heavily in favor of Americana/roots music, with a general disdain for mainstream country). "Smoke Break" is also among NPR's Favorite Country Songs of 2015 (there's also a humorous request of Carrie in another of the songs listed). I think that "Smoke Break"'s main appeal was outside of Carrie's core constituency. In Storyteller reviews, "Smoke Break" has been singled out pretty consistently as excellent, and I still think there is value in Carrie having surprised people with it (in particular, the subset of critics that still pigeonholes her as primarily a rafter-scraping singer of inspirational poppy ballads), and I also think that country radio, for whatever it's worth, was grateful for the somewhat conciliatory gesture from her. I think that "Heartbeat" is also the kind of single that is aimed outside of the constituency Carrie has built over the past ten years. I mention the constituency because it seems to me that the mainstream country fanbase has undergone a shift over the past few years, somewhat driven by country radio's direction over the past few years and, to a lesser but still significant extent, somewhat driven by the backlash to that direction and narrowness. Over the past few years, Carrie has still managed to thrive at the format without fitting into the debate over mainstream country at all -- she certainly wasn't guilty of trend-chasing and a lack of substance during bro country's much-criticized reign (if anything, she went against the grain), but people look at her chart record and see her as the exception who succeeded at doing her own thing without changing the environment around her at all. I think that the first two single choices from Storyteller reflect the label's preference that Carrie's music re-integrate with that conversation/debate about mainstream country and the fans who are part of it, because the label doesn't see Carrie's core constituency as part of the fans driving the current conversation/debate about country music. After all, how could it be? Carrie has built and consolidated a fanbase over ten years, and much of that building/consolidation took place in the first half of those ten years, before the debate that's dominated country discussion since 2013 or so really took hold. Carrie has been a superstar five to six years longer than Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert have, and that group is now being challenged by the next group (Sam Hunt, Thomas Rhett, Cam and perhaps Kelsea Ballerini, with Maren Morris a popular pick to break big in 2016). So with that in mind, I see Storyteller's early path, and the sales path of its singles, as a sort of outreach phase. "Smoke Break," while successful, wasn't the undeniable, zeitgeisty hit that was going to really turn the heads of mainstream country's new core (and it was a song about adult responsibilities, not quite what that new core is about). "Heartbeat" hasn't exploded out of the gate, but its iTunes sales rank is tracking ahead of its airplay (at least once Voice songs are removed) and I think the first tell will really be what happens after it appears on top-30 countdowns (I don't know why, but I've seen that cause a spike). Meanwhile, over on Spotify, "Heartbeat" is already putting up daily streaming numbers close to what "Smoke Break" was getting as it peaked at country radio (in the 65-70K range, which still isn't big, but is a good start relative to airplay and a good one relative to "Smoke Break," which never took off on streaming services). But my larger point is that I think that the label's goal with Storyteller at country radio is to try to build more of a relationship with mainstream country's new core, a listenership defined by its relationship to bro country's sound and a new generation of stars & defining hits (Sam Hunt, "Burning House," "Die a Happy Man," "Girl Crush," etc.), while figuring that Carrie's core fanbase is going to show up to buy the album anyway (if not in the first week, then eventually). And seen that way, I guess it's not all that surprising to me that there might be a slower build at work on the sales side for the singles -- Carrie isn't the shiny new, so the new market is going to take some more convincing, and that is going to take time & multiple singles. I'm interested to see how it all plays out over time... Storyteller is already guaranteed to sell enough to be considered a respectable success (with strong enough reviews to match), so it's a question of how far beyond respectable its commercial impact goes.

43dudleyvillas, I totally agree with your points. I think this album's strong critical reception and overall more mature tone is the label's way of trying to transition Carrie from superstar and staple to... well, legend really. I think they are using these riskier selections as a way to expand her audience and even just show that she can keep up and stay afloat even releasing songs that do not fit in line with what is expected of mainstream country artists. I am curious, what did you think of the album as a whole? I never saw your full thoughts. And, what did you think of her Sinatra performance? I know you've always liked her more restrained vocals best, so I'm curious of your opinion on this (in my opinion, career-defining) performance.

Carrie came in at number 2 on the "American Country Countdown Top 10 Stories of 2015". They showed her performance of "Smoke Break" from the Apple Music Festival in London. She was number 2 for her "storybook year", it was a nice segment!

Sold another 27k copies this week, putting it at 404k. It'll be across the 500k line in time for the tour, which'll be nice to brag about leading into the opening night hype. Also, as per HDD, the album is looking to be the 5th best-selling Country album of 2015, and the 30th best-selling album overall. Not bad considering it was released a month and a half ago. There's still another tracking week left in 2015, but it looks like it'll finish the year around those placements.

I know you've always liked her more restrained vocals best, so I'm curious of your opinion on this (in my opinion, career-defining) performance. Hey there, Stephen . I'll answer you in full about the album and Carrie's Sinatra performance later (that's a threat and promise?)...just wanted to make sure you knew I wasn't ignoring you. I agree that Storyteller is an album of transition and am, like you, struck by its more mature tone. I'm not sure I'm reading your "riskier selections" part right, as in I'm not sure whether you're referring to "Smoke Break," her post-"Good Girl" singles until "Heartbeat," album tracks like "Choctaw County Affair" or something else. But for now, just going to drop off a couple more links. Slate's year-end Music Club exchange is usually a fun read...this year, Craig Jenkins' contribution has Storyteller among his top thirty albums of any genre from 2015, which was a nice surprise, and Jewly Hight's must-read on the year in country includes this characteristically astute bit: Meanwhile, Billboard's Chuck Dauphin has Storyteller at #10 on his Best Country Albums of 2015 list, which is a nice mix of mainstream and non-mainstream fare. Also, "Smoke Break" is #11 on Spin's surprisingly on-point (well, I rolled my eyes at only around fifteen percent of the list, which is not bad at all for a forty song list*) Top 40 Country Songs of 2015. *Well, and Lee Ann Womack's "Send It on Down" is way too low, so I guess I raged over that.

^I loved that picture of Carrie Underwood holding the Grammy for Something In The Water. Hope she can do it again for Little Toy Guns. That means she'll be two for two off the greatest hits CD.

#13 on the Billboard 200 this week, #2 Country. 18 13 CARRIE UNDERWOOD STORYTELLER 19/ARISTA NASHVILLE 40,832 32%
Puts it just shy of 450k sold -- somewhere around 445k. Crossing 500k before the tour shouldn't be an issue with gift card sales kicking in after Christmas.

Don't care about Chris Janson.
The Belk Bowl will be the first show where we'll likely get a clue of what might be performed on tour. Excited for live performances of the album tracks! Swear to all that is good and holy, if she ignores "Relapse" and "Chaser" the same way she ignored "Wine After Whiskey" on the last tour, I'll scream.
