While really hope Lean On does get number one, I don't think it's possible. Less sales and airplay than CFMF. But like someone said of they perform at the VMAS that could cause it. I'm almost positive the next number one isn't even in the top 20 yet. Inb4 it's Locked Away

Locked Away will reach top 10 for sure but #1 is always something exceptional so not counting on that.

I'm almost positive the next number one isn't even in the top 20 yet. I'd go even farther and say it's not even been released yet. The only two on the chart right now that show potential are "The Hills" and "Locked Away," and I don't think "The Hills" is going to get enough airplay (too hard to be massive on pop or do much at hot AC) to get there and "Locked Away" just feels like a song that would stall in the 6-10 region.

I'm starting to be a believer in Locked Away. Pretty much full in now. Big move to the top 5 without much promo. This isn't a ten week breaker in my opinion but with the competition down the next month or so this has a real shot to get to number one 4-6 weeks from now.
That said, the list of songs I was 100% sure would get to number one and never did is quite long lol. I still don't understand how Love me like you do missed it. There was a week there when it looked a no-brainer.

I would love Ariana to get a #1 this era! Still upset she missed it with Problem, but five weeks at #2, and ranking in the top 10 of the year end list is still a huge achievement, considering The Way (her previous top 10) had less weeks in the top 10 than Problem did at its peak, and (barely) missed the top 30 (which, tbh, I still don't understand how it finished so high)

I also don't see Pulse's reaction to either "Rather Be" or "Lean On" as unique or excessive. Yes, they're generally well-liked here, but they're also well-liked in general. It's clear a lot of people outside Pulse like these songs, but I don't often see this reaction we usually get here like Rather Be was a masterpiece, the best song of 2014 and that Lean On is the best song in forever and NEEDS to go #1. People still remember the "where will Mim be?" discussions, but I actually think the rooting for Rather Be to break into the top 10 was bigger than that here on Pulse.

Wasn't Rather Be one of those On The Verge songs? And didn't it need that to actually start selling well? I remember people liking it here, but being aware that a strong label push and deal was required before it broke through.

I don't really see the point of this discussion... there are hundreds of songs out there that are likeable and could do well on pop chart for that reason only but hundreds of those songs never do well on charts for reason or another so it's not really indication of anything.
Other factors than quality usually determine if the song is a hit or not.
I really hope that Hold Back the River by James Bay would become a hit because it's very clever song and well done and beautiful and everything BUT it will never touch the top 40 for other reasons.

Be wary, it could switch either this or next week. The airplay gap narrows, the sales gap narrows this week thanks to the performance and the remix which should extend further next week, and the video streaming lead The Weeknd had might reverse. (I don't want it to happen as much as you do, but after Shake it Off returned to the top for 2 straight weeks, I've become more cautious about overconfidence)

In this case though the gap between CFMF and Cheerleader seems to remain the same at best (I would even go on to say that CFMF is getting ahead in Spotify and streaming) so unless CFMF starts to freefall really soon I don't think it will fall below Cheerleader. I'm just wondering what the next #1 will be and how soon it will get there (but for now I project CFMF to be #1 for the next 4-5 weeks). That's just my stipulation though.

Why does Hip-Hop do so much better on Streaming? This is a great question. I assume it is age or demographic related? I think this is a good thing though. It's the new digital download, the counter to radio stations refusing to play certain songs. Even urban was lukewarm to playing Silento but thanks to streaming the song's peak represented its true popularity.

It was only the early 90s when they started to become widely available for most/all album releases and then by the early-to-mid 2000s was when mp3s and digital sales began to creep in there. It seems a particular medium has about a decade, give or take, as the primary way to consume music. Of course, this sounds like a doomsday toward digital sales when digital only just recently overtook CDs as the top selling form of music. I suspect the conversion of CD to digital to streaming will continue to gradually evolve over the next few years anyway.

Yes. It is odd that the genre thrives on streaming when it was an uphill battle on iTunes for most of the 12 years. Maybe hip-hop fans just never felt like paying for digital music? They might have been listening to it all along, and Billboard just hadn't found a way to quantify it before.

We are at a point now where the hot 100 is a streaming chart. Digital numbers are so small except for a few monster records that streaming seems to decide who takes the crown. Unless its a multiformat smash pretty much any top 3 single is going to reach about 150M in AI so airplay ends up being a wash.
