Fetty Wap Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

Rapper Fetty Wap crowns the Billboard 200 albums chart, as his self-titled debut studio album opens at No. 1. The set, which was released Sept. 25 through RGF/300 Entertainment, earned 129,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 1, according to Nielsen Music.

Fetty Wap leads a busy week on the chart, where a total of seven albums debut in the top 10.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Oct. 17-dated chart (where Fetty Wap is No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s website on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Fetty Wap’s No. 1 achievement follows a series of hit singles from the artist earlier in 2015. He previously logged three top 10s on the Billboard Hot 100 from the set with “Trap Queen” (peaking at No. 2), “679” (No. 6) and “My Way” (No. 7).

The arrival of Fetty Wap at No. 1 was powered by 75,000 in pure album sales, with the remainder of its 129,000 unit total earned from TEA and SEA (thanks in part to the strong performance of the album’s successful singles).

Fetty Wap is the first hip-hop act to see their debut studio effort hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in over two years. The last to do so was A$AP Rocky, who opened atop the chart dated Feb. 2, 2012 with Long.Live.A$AP (138,000 copies sold in its first week).

Last week’s No. 1 album, Drake and Future’s surprise release What a Time to Be Alive, slips to No. 2 in its second chart week with 107,000 units (down 72 percent).

Don Henley earns his highest charting solo album ever on the Billboard 200, as his new Cass County set starts at No. 3 with 89,000 units. It’s also the top selling album of the week (with 87,000 in pure album sales) and leads the Top Album Sales chart.

Cass County is Henley’s first studio album in more than 15 years, since Inside Job was released in May of 2000. Inside Job debuted and peaked at No. 7, and marked his second solo top 10 effort, following 1989’s No. 8-peaking The End of the Innocence.

The new Cass County release is also a country set, Henley’s first to be classified as such, and debuts at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart.

Henley is also of course a member of the band the Eagles, which has logged eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, with six of those reaching No. 1.

Country titan George Strait achieves his 20th top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with the No. 4 arrival of Cold Beer Conversation (86,000 units; 83,000 from pure album sales). With the bow, Strait extends his record as the country artist with the most top 10 albums on the Billboard 200.

The Weeknd’s former No. 1, Beauty Behind the Madness, falls two rungs to No. 5 in its fifth chart week (81,000 units; down 10 percent).

Country singer Thomas Rhett notches his second top 10 album as Tangled Up steps in at No. 6 with 76,000 units (63,000 from pure album sales). Tangled Up is Rhett’s second full-length studio album and follows the No. 6 debut and peak of It Goes Like This in 2013 (which launched with 36,000 copies sold).

Taylor Swift’s 1989 spends a 49th straight week in the top 10 (which is also its entire chart run) as it moves 8-7 with 41,000 units (down 4 percent).

Alternative band Chvrches starts at No. 8 with Every Open Eye, moving 38,000 units. The start trumps the group’s previous chart high, earned in 2013 with Bones (No. 12 debut and peak). The new album also debuts at No. 1 on both the Top Rock Albums and the Alternative Albums charts.

The new set’s current single, “Leave a Trace,” climbed into the top 30 of the Alternative Songs chart on the Oct. 10-dated chart (rising 31-26).

Dance duo Disclosure follows at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 with the debut of their second album, Caracal (35,000 units; 25,000 in pure album sales). The guest-filled set (which boasts acts like Sam Smith, Lorde and The Weeknd) gives Disclosure its first top 10 album, surpassing the No. 36 peak of their debut set, Settle, in 2014.

Caracal also starts at No. 1 on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Settle spent two weeks at No. 1 on the tally in 2014.

Closing out the Billboard 200’s top 10 is rock band The Dead Weather with their third studio effort, Dodge and Burn, which bows at No. 10 with 33,000 units (32,000 in pure album sales). It’s the third consecutive top 10 set for the group, which previously hit the region with Sea of Cowards (No. 5 in 2010) and Horehound (No. 6 in 2009).

Just like last week, three of this week's Top 5 albums are new releases but unlike last week, all three of these releases are positioned 1, 2, 3. Don Henley's highly-promoted Cass County debuts in the pole position with 87,500 copies sold in the first week, a little over 5k more than George Strait's Cold Beer Conversation sold in its first week (which is remarkable given that it was only at Apple Music, Walmart and the Nashville Pop-up store). Strait's album sold 82,700 while Henley's album is his back to his roots (he is from Texas) collection of music and it's also the first solo album since 2000's Inside Job. Strait only announced his album 3 days before the record hit stores. At #3 is Thomas Rhett's sophomore album Tangled Up. The album sold roughly 27,000 more copies than Rhett's debut It Goes Like This did in its first week for a total of nearly 63,000 copies sold. At #4 is Luke Bryan's Kill The Lights. It has now scanned nearly 604,000 copies to date. Sam Hunt's Montevallo sits at #5 with 772,600 scanned to date.

Top Ten Recap

Sitting at #6 is last week's #2 album, Alabama's Southern Drawl. The album has scanned 28,500 in two weeks while Brett Eldredge sits at #7 with his sophomore album Illinois. The Eldredge album has scanned 60,000 copies to date. Zac Brown Band sits at #11 with 537,100 scanned to date while Eric Church is at #9 with his Platinum certified The Outsiders. Sitting at #10 this week is Florida Georgia Line with over 768,000 copies scanned to date.

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the Oct. 17 chart:

— New Order, Music Complete - No. 34 — New Order achieves its highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 since 1993, as Music Complete debuts at No. 34 with 13,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 1 (according to Nielsen Music). The band last went higher with 1993’s Republic, debuting and peaking at No. 11 (their highest charting set ever). Music is the group’s Mute debut, their first studio effort since 2005’s Waiting for the Sirens’ Call (No. 46 peak), and their ninth charting set.

— Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap, The Silver Lining: The Music of Jerome Kern - No. 96 — Tony Bennett’s 45th charting album also debuts at No. 1 on the Traditional Jazz Albums chart, his 12th leader on the list. He most recently led the tally with his Lady Gaga collaboration Cheek to Cheek (18 weeks at No. 1). Bennett’s first entry on the chart came on the Feb. 23, 1957-dated tally, when the simply titled Tony entered the list, eventually peaking at No. 14. Among his hit albums are the chart-topping Duets II in 2011 and Cheek to Cheek.

— Dumblonde, Dumblonde - No. 129 — Dumblonde — comprised of two members of the defunct girl group Danity Kane — debuts at No. 129 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on Heatseekers Albums with their self-titled set (5,000 sold in the week ending Oct. 1, according to Nielsen Music). Dumblonde was formed by Shannon Bex and Aubrey O’Day after a Danity Kane reunion went south in 2014. The former quintet, which earned two No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 in 2006 and 2008, reformed as a quartet in 2013 (without former member D. Woods). Then, in 2014, Aundrea Fimbres departed the group, leaving Bex, O’Day and Dawn Richard. The trio carried on until August 2014, when a physical altercation involving the three ended the reunion.

— Soundtrack, Outlander: The Series — Original Television Soundtrack, Vol. 2 - No. 147 — The second installment of the hit TV series’ soundtrack bows with 4,000 units for the week. It also enters at No. 4 on the Soundtracks chart.

— Shawn Colvin, Uncovered - No. 175 — The singer returns to the Billboard 200 with her ninth charting effort, bowing at No. 175 with 4,000 units (nearly all from pure album sales). The new set is a covers set, where she interprets tunes written by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and John Fogerty. The new album also debuts at No. 7 on the Folk Albums chart.

— Il Volo, Grande Amore: International Version – No. 188 — Three similar Il Volo albums debut on three different Oct. 17-dated Billboard charts. The Italian/English Grande Amore: International Edition starts at No. 188 on the Billboard 200, while its Spanish equivalent, Grande Amore, bows at No. 7 on Top Latin Albums. Then, the Italian-language set, L’Amore Si Muove, starts at No. 9 on the Classical Crossover Albums chart. Bonus: both Grande Amore: International Version and Grande Amore also start in the top 10 on the Classical Crossover Albums chart, at Nos. 1 and 5, respectively. Thus, Il Volo has three concurrently charting albums in the top 10.
