It only counts as an "instant grat " if people purchased the full album and got the single because of that. I would guess that most people are not pre ordering the whole album. Also, it feels fuzzy to me -- the instant grat rule seemed aimed at songs that only became available AFTER a pre order, I wonder if it even applies in this case. Not sure if you saw this on the previous page, but it specifically says tracks prior to the album release... because that's the only time a pre-order instant grat exists! Am I misunderstanding your fuzziness? Effective Friday, October 10th, 2014, iTunes sales reported to Nielsen SoundScan will no longer include instant gratification tracks delivered prior to the release of an album when the consumer purchases the entire album. The purchase of the album, as an individual transaction, will be counted when the complete project has been delivered upon album release. Individual tracks purchases will still be counted at the time of purchase and returned at the time the consumer decides to “Complete My Album”.www.thatericalper.com/2014/09/18/itunes-reporting-methodology-change-impacting-nielsen-soundscan-u-s-canada/You're right, it seems pretty straightforward. What I was getting at is that if you pre order an album with the first single available, that seems different (because you can hear the song and clearly want it and you get it at the time of purchase) than when later songs become available (when you instantly get the song without h spring it or taking further action). But it sounds like technically they are the same deal and wouldn't count.

That'd count as 300k first day, then, right? 400k sales minus 100k pre-orders? I just want to make sure I'm understanding this rule

I think those 400K are without the pre orders.

UKMix: Kworb early estimates : 1. Hello 1,031,000 2. Sorry 242,000 3. Hotline Bling 168,000 4. The Hills 89,000 5. Home 78,000 6. What Do You Mean? 74,000 7. Ex's & Oh's 74,000 8. Wildest Dreams 71,000 9. Stitches 70,000 10. Perfect 70,000 11. Downtown 70,000 Will obviously decrease by the end of the week especially since the prediction includes instant grats which Billboard doesn't count and... SIO was predicted to sell 700k+ in the early predictions and ended up selling 544k Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's 2 One Direction songs in the top 11 (Home, Perfect)? And Adele is slaying. (Using SIO's numbers, still looking like 797k this wk, although that's early)

Can someone try to explain me why Justin Bieber released a new single on the same day as Adele? He told everyone a week ahead "Sorry" would be released yesterday. Adele only told about the release of "Hello" a day ahead of the release date. We knew that day was coming very soon, I don't think any of us or he would've guessed it'd come out yesterday.

Until Wednesday the word was that she was coming on the 30th. But also, I am sure bieber was not expecting a number 1 anyway. Sorry wasn't going to have the airplay to open at the top, just a possible top 10 or 20 debut.

And lets just be honest, it's not like you can just change all plans because someone else bigger drops a single. They have an album to promote and sell, so life goes on, and so does business. It's a busy time and it's only gonna get worse, ya know? They kinda have to let the singles/chart chips fall where they may around the typhoon that is Adele. As long as they keep promoting their stuff and maximizing pre-orders and album sales, they are gonna be ok.

So looks like we will only have 10 Hot 100 #1's this year. Hotline Bling #9 this week and Hello #10 for the rest of the year. Drops down to 7 if you take out the one weekers.

The one-weekers, if we take popbox's supposition that Hotline Bling will be a one-weeker and that Hello will take the last 3 weeks of the year, would be: Bad Blood What Do You Mean Hotline Bling So in essence, we've only had 7 "natural" #1s with longevity at the top. The one-weekers all had some big impetus pushing them that couldn't last: Bad Blood and Hotline Bling had the music video launch, while What Do You Mean had the hype/everything launch.

So in essence, we've only had 7 "natural" #1s with longevity at the top. The one-weekers all had some big impetus pushing them that couldn't last: Bad Blood and Hotline Bling had the music video launch, while What Do You Mean had the hype/everything launch. A #1 is a #1 is a #1 is a #1. There's nothing anymore "unnatural" about a one-week #1 than a six-week #1. This is ridiculous.

Some one weekers from recent years:
When I Was Your Man Black and Yellow Give Me Everything Only Girl What's My Name and Poker Face
If we include S&M Rihanna would have at least 3 number ones LESS than she has now, just because of that "one weeker rule"
