I'm confused, why can't Adele just take her time and release the album about 3 months later like Taylor Swift did? Now at least the 1 million is gone..

Maybe they wanted to take advantage of Christmas sales.

I happen to agree with the 450k estimate. According to Kworb's site, Hello sold 7.5 times what HB sold on Friday, and 7 times on Saturday. Assuming HB is selling 30k every day on the weekends, Hello should have sold: On Friday: 7.5x30 = 225 On Saturday: 7.0x30 = 210 Total: 435 On Sunday, it is looking to sell ~175k. So the 3-day sales has definitely crossed 600k, but it should be below 650k. I can see it doing another 400k+ for Mon-Thurs, so that will mean 1.0M+ first week. Fair enough; that all makes sense. But the issue I was raising earlier is that if you agree 450K is an accurate two-day total, you couldn't possibly accept 400K as an accurate one-day number. It's the 400k number which seems absurd..... comparing with any track on itunes and extrapolating yields around 225-250k. For example, it was 18x of WDYM/WD. I'm pretty sure they aren't selling more than 15k a day at the moment.

In all likelihood she's going to open with a million units just based off the strength of pre-sales, and her second week total will be huge because of black friday

They want Grammys for both the single(s) and the album. Releasing it prior to September 30 meant competing with a pretty crowded, already-embraced class that should include Blank Space, Thinking Out Loud, and Can't Feel My Face -- and without an album to bolster the credibility/significance of the nomination.
But they also want to capitalize on the holiday season. They probably could have gotten away with dropping the single a week or two earlier, but that's about it. Three months of separation wasn't happening.

They also needed time to reintroduce Taylor Swift in her current incarnation as pop singer and had no idea how her fanbase would react to a very drastic shift in sound and imagine. They needed the time. Adele doesn't.

Well Taylor is on a fixed biennial schedule - lead single in mid August; album in late October. In even-numbered calendar years.

No update on this (pre-Adele) Hot 100 yet? Billboard usually posts their Hot 100 top 10 article in a couple hours from now, approximately. Soon!!

Can someone link where they found this info? Is it possible that the other 150k came from other digital outlets? If we're actually looking at the possibility that she could sell 1m units in a week, a 90/10 split between itunes & other digital outlets (Google play and amazon) isn't totally out of the realm of possibility i would imagine.

Three months of separation wasn't happening. I never got the point of releasing a single (sometimes two) three months before the album. If you are actively promoting a song shouldn't that be the best time to have the album out and capitalize on the song's success while it's still hot? I know there's pre-orders, but I don't think they can sell as much as actually having your album out.

I know there's pre-orders, but I don't think they can sell as much as actually having your album out. Well, in the past singles didn't make an immediate impact the way they do now. These days it makes less sense to put a single out months ahead of the album, though in some formats (like country) it can still take months for a song to peak. Sometimes it takes a bit for labels/PR to adjust to changes in technology and trends. It's also different depending on the artist; some artists can get an immediate impact more easily than others.

In this age of digital pre-orders... the instant grat tracks/complete my album is a major way to boost album sales... at least for big names. Plus, pre-order figures give the label an idea of demand and how many physical CDs to manufacture. So putting a single out months before the album is smart, imo, especially if you're a pop star with a big fanbase. 12 weeks is less than half a hit single's chart life in many cases these days. And even if the first single peaks and goes away, or even flops, the extra time allows them to launch a 2nd single before an album's release. It's a win-win most of the time.

There's also incentive now that Billboard is SPS based to shorten the window to make the album look bigger than it actually is for an artist with a monster single.

That's too bad. As much as I love The Hills, I was rooting for that lead #1.

Drake is such a dummy. If these streaming services would stop being so pretentious with these exclusives, he would have had it easy.
We can't even say Adele stopped him. He stopped himself.
