A cappella group Pentatonix achieves its first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, as its new self-titled album debuts atop the tally. The set was released on Oct. 16 through RCA Records, and starts with slightly more than 98,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 22, according to Nielsen Music.



The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Nov. 7-dated chart (where Pentatonix is No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s Web sites on Tuesday, Oct. 27.



Pentatonix’s latest album is their first full-length non-covers set (minus one reworking of Shai’s “If Ever I Fall In Love,” featuring Jason Derulo). Pentatonix is their fifth consecutive top 10 effort, following That’s Christmas to Me (No. 2 in 2014), PTX: Vol. III (EP) (No. 5, also in 2014), PTX: Vol. II (No. 10, 2013) and PTXMAS (EP) (No. 7 in 2013). The quintet logged one earlier chart entry, their 2012 debut PTX: Volume 1, which bowed and peaked at No. 14.



Pentatonix sold 88,000 in pure album sales -- the act’s best opening week -- ranking it at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart. (Pentatonix’s single largest sales week came in the frame ending Nov. 30, 2014, when That’s Christmas to Me moved 217,000 copies in its sixth week on sale.)


The new album’s first single, “Can’t Sleep Love,” is the group’s first airplay chart hit aside from their Christmas music. “Can’t Sleep Love” debuted on the Adult Pop Songs airplay chart (dated Oct. 31) at No. 37, and rose 25-21 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Previously, Pentatonix’s only airplay hits came on the Adult Contemporary tally with three holiday tunes from their Christmas album: “Little Drummer Boy” (No. 27 peak), the title track (No. 3) and “Mary, Did You Know?” (No. 20).



Demi Lovato’s new Confident set debuts at No. 2 on the latest Billboard 200 chart with 98,000 units, giving the singer/actress her fifth straight top five-charting album. It follows Demi (No. 3 in 2013), Unbroken (No. 4, 2011), Here We Go Again (No. 1, 2009) and debut, Don’t Forget (No. 2, 2008).


Confident moved 77,000 in pure album sales, placing it at No. 2 on the Top Album Sales chart. Her new album was released through Safehouse Records in partnership with Island Records and Hollywood Records. The latter label has been Lovato’s home since her 2008 debut.



Confident was led by the single “Cool for the Summer,” which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 3 on the Pop Songs airplay chart. It was followed by the album’s title track, which reentered the Hot 100 (dated Oct. 31) at No. 58, and climbed 26-24 on the Pop Songs tally.



The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness is steady at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 62,000 units (down 19 percent).



Rapper Machine Gun Kelly collects his second top 10 effort, as General Admission checks in at No. 4 with 56,000 units (49,000 in pure album sales). He previously visited the region in 2012 with his last studio effort, Lace Up, which debuted and peaked at No. 4 (51,000 sold in its first week).



He also earns his first No. 1s on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Rap Albums charts, as General Admission bows atop both tallies.



Fetty Wap’s self-titled former No. 1 falls one rung to No. 5 on the new Billboard 200, with 48,000 units (down 10 percent).



The Game’s The Documentary 2.5 starts at No. 6 (nearly 48,000 units; with 42,000 in album sales). It follows The Documentary 2, which debuted at No. 2 a week ago (and falls to No. 11 this week).



Last week’s No. 1, Selena Gomez’s Revival, slips to No. 7 with 46,000 units (down 61 percent), Drake & Future’s What a Time to Be Alive moves 5-8 with 43,000 (down 12 percent), and Taylor Swift’s 1989 falls 6-9 with 37,000 (down 1 percent).



Closing out the top 10 is rock act Coheed and Cambria with its new album The Color Before the Sun debuting at No. 10 (32,000 units). It’s the sixth top 10 effort for the band, and marks their sixth straight studio set to reach the top 10, following: The Afterman: Descension (No. 9 in 2013), The Afterman: Ascension (No. 5, 2012), Year of the Black Rainbow (No. 5, 2010), No World for Tomorrow (No. 6, 2007) and Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV (No. 7, 2005).

The Game's The Documentary 2.5 debuts at the #6 spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The first installment of The Documentary 2 lands at #11. Machine Gun Kelly's General Admission reaches the #4 spot on the chart. Joe Budden's All Love Lost lands at the #29 spot its first week. Drake and Future's What a Time to be Alive remains in the top 10 overall and each rapper's solo project remains in the top 25.

The Game Charts Both Discs of The Documentary 2

The Documentary 2.5 lands at #6 in its first week, selling 47,921 units. It was streamed more than five million times. The Documentary 2 sees a 70 percent drop in sales from its debut week, charting at #11 with 28,810 albums sold. This project saw nearly nine million streams. Both projects were released independently. The Game's debut album, The Documentary, charted at #1 upon its 2005 release and sold 587,000 units with the backing of Interscope/Aftermath/G-Unit.

Machine Gun Kelly's General Admission Debuts at #4

Machine Gun Kelly sold 56,310 units of General Admission to match the success of his Lace Up LP, which also reached the #4 position on the Top 200 in 2012. General Admission saw more than five million streams.

Joe Budden Charts Another Project With All Love Lost

Joe Budden's All Love Lost lands at the #29 spot with 15,254 albums sold. His last project, 2013's No Love Lost, peaked at the #15 spot upon its release. The New Jersey rapper's debut self-titled album reached the #8 spot when it was released through Def Jam in 2003.

Taylor Swift's 1989 album celebrates a full first year in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, making it just the fifth album to spend its first 52 weeks of release in the top 10.

In its 52nd frame on the tally (dated Nov. 7), 1989 slips 6-9 with 37,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 22, according to Nielsen Music. The set debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated Nov. 14, 2014, spent 11 nonconsecutive weeks atop the list and has yet to leave the top tier.

The ‘80s saw just one album manage the feat: Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A., which holds the record for the longest consecutive top 10 run from its debut: 84 weeks (June 23, 1984 through Jan. 25, 1986). (Unlike Dion and Adele, however, once Springsteen’s album departed the top 10, it never returned.)

Before the Boss, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours clocked a year (52 frames) in the top 10 from its start at No. 10 on Feb. 26, 1977 through the Feb. 18, 1978-dated chart. (While Rumours never came back to the top 10, it got close: on the May 21, 2011 chart, following Fox TV’s Glee tribute episode to Rumours, the album reentered the chart at No. 11.)


It’s important to note that it wasn’t commonplace for an album to debut in the top 10 before the chart began using Nielsen Music’s point-of-sale data, beginning with the May 25, 1991-dated chart. Between Aug. 17, 1963 (when the chart’s earlier separate mono and stereo album charts joined into one all-encompassing chart) through May 18, 1991, just 59 albums debuted in the top 10. The first set to debut in the region in that span of time was The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which bowed at No. 8 on the June 24, 1967 chart. The Billboard 200 didn’t welcome its first No. 1 debut until June 7, 1975, when Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy galloped in at No. 1.

I tried to find the answer to this one, but where did Thriller start on the chart. I know it spent 37 weeks in the #1 spot. Where was it during the other 15 weeks? Thanks.

Did not debut in the top 10. Opened at #11 12/25/82, the chart was frozen 1/1/83, it then spent the next 78 weeks in the top 10

After a tighter-than-tight battle, RCA’s Pentatonix eked out a win on the Bible’s “consumption” chart, scoring a first-week total of 98.4k, edging past the 98.1k for Safehouse/Island/Hollywood’s Demi Lovato. That’s a difference of fewer than 300 units—less than 3/10 of 1%. It’s believed that the 2.6k generated by PTX sales through the Cracker Barrel chain made the difference.

Here’s the Bible breakdown: PTX reportedly sold 87.7k albums and 54.8k songs and saw 7.8 million streams in their first week, while Demi moved 76.6k albums, 136.1k songs and 11.9m streams. Pass the syrup.

Just can't with Hits Daily Double mocking the consumption methodology when they promote (in a non-satirical fashion) their own "sales plus streaming" chart.  I'm also pretty sure they started reporting historical/weekly/quarterly sales data in terms of Pure Sales + TEA long before Billboard revamped its BB200.

As for the actual scoop here, we constantly see the impact of these retail promotions -- it's so baffling that more labels don't take advantage.  What did RCA/PTX give up in exchange for those 2.6K sales -- fan Twitter Q&As (that they probably would have done anyway) and maybe a slight cut off the top?  Certainly a winner of a deal for them.

111? Why, that’s only 555 spots away from 666! So metal. While the album’s sold 76,000 copies in six weeks, 1994’s Diabolus in Musica sold 93,000 copies in it’s first week. Wow.

A 39% drop. Now that’s just cold.



Queensrÿche, Condition Human (Century Media) #145, 1,900 sold

Current condition: 60% drop.

A 41% drop, dog. That probably won’t effect their live draw, though.
