Then maybe it could be, because I've seen most people don't like Jamie Foxx in the chorus..

Pop tends to be pretty forgiving anyway. Just look at Justin Bieber and Chris Brown. Good point, though the media and public tend to be more forgiving of males than females.

Yup, show biz is rather sexist and ageist and the music biz is the worst. Female artists in their 30's struggle for airplay so never mind a female artist in their 40's or 50's or 60's. Men are allowed to age and it is considered OK but that is not the case for women. Hey, maybe Adele can change it and still get adds in her 40's and 50's and 60's. I sure hope so!

^That is true, but... what males, as lead acts, are getting a lot of airplay in their 50s and beyond? :)

Look at how many male celebrities are wife beaters, assault women, etc. and still have hits and Grammys. Meanwhile Winona Ryder never recovered from a shoplifting incident. Look at the reaction to Mariah's breakdown versus when Eminem had one.

They're also the top 2 songs (in the same order) in OZ and NZ. US is most definitely gonna have the same rankings and I wonder if Canada will follow suit.

Male artists are not expected to be sexy after a certain age. Sadly women are. It is not fair but true. I love artists like Katy Perry, Janet Jackson, Adele, Taylor Swift but no matter how big they are as they age airplay gets more and more difficult. Even after they go past big airplay years it is hard to even remain relevant. If male older artists like Paul McCartney or Rod Stewart or Mick Jagger were female they would not be as much in the public eye since they all look old. For some reason men can look like crap and it is OK. The only women from the 1960's who were able to work into their 50's and 60's (big arenas) are Tina Turner and Cher. Of course Tina and Cher were still expected to be sexy. If Cher tours next year as she plans (at age 70) she will still need to wear sexy things. Her male counterparts like Paul M or Rob S or Elton J and Mick J do not need to worry about it. None of us want to see them shirtless, right.
The reason I am excited about Adele is her career is so based on talent and not about sexiness. I think Adele will be able to stay relevant into her 60's and beyond just focusing on her music.

Focus is gonna be her Downtown. (Good verses, but a chorus that you either love or hate.)

I'm not a big Ariana fan or necessarily trying to defend her, but it has been only 3 days, we might be making judgements too soon. Just because sales aren't opening big, doesn't mean they won't pick up later and airplay can't slowly start to increase. As an example, both of Rihanna's first singles from her last two albums, We Found Love and Diamonds, took several weeks to get to #1.
As for Adele, looks like she'll not only be #1 overall, but top ten in airplay tomorrow - after only 2 weeks, very unusual!

There's so much going on right now at the very top that it may be as simple as Ariana getting somewhat lost in the shuffle. Like someone else said, she is probably just not yet the super huge force that some like to think she is, so there is no need to try to pin it on her licking doughnuts** or the song being undeniably 'bad.' Problem had a really nice setup and a feature with (at the time) one of the hottest new artists who had a top 5 currently on the chart. There also were not any other new songs at the time to compete for attention. The launch for Focus feels more understated and there are two still-fresh 'event' singles already hogging the spotlight, plus Hotline Bling and The Hills still going strong. When you consider the current star power of Adele/Justin Bieber/Drake/The Weekend, that Ariana will (probably) debut in the top 5 among them is not anything to be disappointed about at all.
The real test for Focus will be callout; radio likes her and will spin her unless and until they are given a reason not to, so I expect to see it make steady gains for the next few weeks at least. The good thing about the timing is that if it looks like the song is going to stall her team will be able to spot that in December, but no one is going to expect them to try to rush out something else then. There will be time to get it together and prepare single #2 for a big launch in late January or February.
**I had completely forgotten about the doughnut thing until I was reading the previous page of this thread, and I imagine that's how it is with the general public as well. That incident wasn't nearly as newsworthy as it's made out to be.

Funnily enough, while Adele obviously has an outstanding voice, the Glee Cast actually made a pretty amazing medley cover of Someone Like You and Rumour Has It. Probably one of the only Glee covers that I really enjoyed: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rcc6G9fqOeYYes! So great to see someone bringing this up. I still have it on my iPhone.

While it's true that female acts are expected to be sexier even at an old age, let's keep in mind that it's not straight men who expect them to be sexy but rather their gay fans. No man cares whether Cher dresses in sexy outfits or not, but she has to do it because that's what her gay fans expect of her. Same for Madonna. Or Britney.

Licking donuts aren't why Focus isn't setting the world on fire. It's a combination of a lot of things. It's not the strongest lead single ever. It's only a a year since her last album, the last single from My Everything finished its run less than 6 months ago. 5 singles in less than a year is a lot of Ariana. It's EXTREMELY similar to Problem in structure and sound. It was released at a time when there are several monster songs at the top of the chart that it just won't be able to compete with on the merits. They would have needed a full on media blitz release week because Adele has sucked all of the oxygen out of the mainstream media for music.
I wouldn't say Focus is an failure yet. It will need some time and promotion to see if it catches on, and radio will certainly keep it around for at least a while.

Or maybe a lot of people had way too high expectations for Focus and it's just performing well for an artist not at Taylor/Adele levels.

Or maybe a lot of people had way too high expectations for Focus and it's just performing well for an artist not at Taylor/Adele levels. Not to mention that Problem was a bit more of an 'event' single, given it had Iggy on it (who was on fire at the time). Not to say that its wasn't a good song on its own merits, but it was the timing and feature that made it have such a big, splashy debut. And what's already been mentioned... not enough time has passed since her last single - or even Problem, for that matter. I think Focus is a good song... the chorus takes a left turn, which, say what you will about it.... it stands out and has a pair of balls attached to it.
