Sorry already surpass Focus on iTunes. I'm really impressed. If Focus can only sell less than 150k this week, then why did Problem make a lofty 438k in 2014 just with a lyrics video? Just because it didn't sound like a recycled stuff and had Iggy in it? Serious it doesn't make sense! Focus' video had about 10 m views in one day but how come its sale is so grim? I thought Ariana is more or less an established diva after My Everything

I don't know, I don't feel like Adele has it in her what it takes to deal with superstardom status. Out of her 4 last singles she only shot a video for one of them. That "I'm just here for the music" can only last for so long, eventually she'll have to promote her albums, do talk show interviews and play wheel of impressions on TVmlike every other mortal musician - even the huge ones.

Ariana is so popular than Justin, I can't understand... Since when? I know #1s aren't the benchmark for success but Justin's last single went to #1 and Ariana's never had one in her career.

I do kind of agree. Expectations are so high for the next couple years for Adele but I do think the time will come when people will stop being so impressed. Not that she'll have a backlash or whatever - I feel like Adele is like Jennifer Lawrence in that respect and she can do no wrong - but she'll have already impressed as much as she can. It helps that she's so likeable and personable in interviews though so as long as she does those on a somewhat regular basis, she won't need to do much else.

Yes, it isn't benchmark of success. Until WDYM, the best single of Justin was Boyfriend #2, and Problem was #2 too.

What is the consensus on the quality of Hello, guys? I've seen a lot of positive comments, but honestly I don't think it holds a candle to Rolling in the deep and Someone like you (but that maybe people are just too excited for Adele's return to mind that). Well, i never liked Someone like you (in fact i think it's my less favourite Adele's single behind Skyfall). Rolling in the deep is sinply too much (i can't understand why it was not number one on UK). That song changed everything, now it seems difficult to believe but Adele's arriving in the USA wasn't that easy, she was not Sam Smith that only needed one performance to establish himself. 19 sold well, but even with all the awards and fantastic reception to her performances, none of her singles had an impact (not even the amazing Chasing pavements which barely was top 20 on hot ac and didn't impacted on pop). Rolling in the deep changed everything, she suddenly was not only a woman capable to sell a lot of albums (19 did very well despite of radio reception), she was a force of nature, a hit maker and a pop diva. And i doubt any other single could do that for her. Apart of that is an amazing song, so amazing that it sounds great in every cover people make I think Hello is a great ballad with an amazing chorus, we'll see if pass the test of time If I remember it right, Adele's SNL performance gave big boost to 19 and Chasing Pavements. 19 was indeed under the radar then but that SNL performance I felt was the one who ignited Adele's star status. 21 did open well and Rolling in the Deep was not peaking yet that time I love Hello but yes it's no Rolling in the Deep, that song will always be special and hard to match

He has a much bigger fanbase than Ariana and he's currently got a lot more momentum than she has.

Whether or not she was already known, that Brit Awards performance of "SLY" definitely took her to another level there. Personally I don't believe so. She was already racking up monsterous album sales before it was pushed. Even if she had performed "Set Fire To The Rain" or "Rolling In The Deep" at the BRITS instead, the album was clearly going to be a monster. Racking up nearly 500k sales in the 3 weeks before the performance in January/February (outside of Q4) is insane. I think she was on another level as soon as the album dropped.

Focus isn't selling well because it is truly an awful song. I'm not a fan of Ariana to begin with (because she's a major diva) but I can enjoy some of her music. Focus however is the worst song she's put out by a long shot. Her label got arrogant, and she's paying by lack of reception to the song.

Kind of a random questions, but who makes the decisions for these big pop acts, like Justin or Ariana? Like, who decides when the single is going to be released, whether there'll be a lyric video or they'll drop the music video right away, when and where they are going to perform the song, etc. Does the artist get a say in those? Is it the manager who decides? Or someone at the label (if so, who?)

I think most people on pop forums overestimate how "big" Ariana is. I like her (and in my opinion Focus is a good song and will be a hit), but remember Flo Rida had Good Feeling, Wild Ones, Whistle and I Cry in the space of a year. Jason Derulo had Talk Dirty, Whistle, Trumpets, The Other Side all in just over a year. Fetty Wap this year has had Trap Queen, My Way and 679. Having a string of hits means you've had a string of hits, that's pretty much it.
I think because Ariana is female people pop fans over-estimate her a bit. Ciara and Ashanti had a bunch of hits like Ariana once upon a time.

The Ariana thing may be personal.
She bruised her image in middle America with "hating America" comment. Those things sting a huge portion of the populace.

Apparently "Hello" had 24.8 million YouTube views from the US in the Billboard tracking week. So its' first week US streaming numbers (from Hits estimates & YouTube numbers) are at 52.6 million .

Re: the "I hate America" comments—how many people who were offended by that would've bought Ariana's single anyway, or knew who Ariana was before it, or even pay attention to pop music regularly? There's a reason "Focus" seems to be underperforming but I don't think that's it.

I don't even think it bothered people that much, a lot of people just look for a reason to be offended. The doughnut incident is over, no one really cares anymore, it's just a joke now. "I'm not going to buy this song because she licked a doughnut and said America has an obesity problem".

Pop tends to be pretty forgiving anyway. Just look at Justin Bieber and Chris Brown.
