One thing though is that this is Adele's absolute peak. That isn't to say it's all downhill from here, but I think with the absolute hype from post-21 plus the excitement built from this song's instant and massive success, these next few months will be all about Adele until it simmers a bit and she settles into a more regular position as a pop star. There's something about the kickoff of a new era following a monster last era that brings a pop star to extreme highs.

Sorry, but HITS numbers are absolutely not confirmation of anything. If they're the only ones reporting, they can't be verified. If they're backing up another source's figure, then the other source is the confirmation (pending reliability), not HITS.

Not so sure
Conventional wisdom suggests that "lightning in a bottle" type albums like "21" and "Thriller" and others happen once per artist. Then after the once in a career album happens, the slide starts.
With Adele, I have learned to set aside conventional wisdom.

In a sense yes, she's not going to spend the next 2 years with a 5x lead over the #2 on iTunes. It will die down eventually. I personally think her peak was in 2011 with the 21 album though, rather than now.

This coming week could also be an unusual one in which none of the acts in the top 5 are American. Looks like Adele and Justin will crash the top five, where the current top four are all Canadian.
Is the current chart a record for number of Canadians in the Top 5 and Top 10? It's a record for top 5, since they have four in there, and it's apparently rare enough for four non-Americans, regardless of nationality, to be in the top 5. For top 10, I think it's almost a guarantee we've never had four Canadians in the top 10 at once. I think it's been pretty rare for us to even have two in there. Billboard just posted this, but no confirmation on the top ten thing. EDIT: OK, the completist in me has to look this up - so far, I did find a time where there were four Canadians in the top 15 - For the week ending 1/23/99 - Deborah Cox (Nobody's Supposed to Be here) and Celine Dion (dueting with R. Kelly on "I'm Your Angel) were in the top 10. Sarah Mclachlan (Angel) rose 18-13, and Shania Twain (From This Moment On) fell 12-15. Shania and Sarah shared the top ten with the other two at separate times, so there were three Canadians in the top ten for some weeks around that time. Interesting that at that time, it was four women who charted and this time it is four men!

I know people are already talking multiple #1s from '25' - going five or six singles deep, etc. (which didn't even happen on '21'). I just use the most recent example of follow-up to a monster era - "Prism' - "Roar' opened in a monster way and the predictions for the way 'Prism' was going to go were lofty. I have no doubt that the quality of '25' will be on par with '21,' but it will be a matter of whether the songs connect in a personal way like the '21' singles and, obviously, 'Hello,' to expect longevity. Looking forward to the 'official' single sales and streaming totals!

What if ADELE releases her Unconditionally next instead of a more sure-fire one?

Looking forward to the 'official' single sales and streaming totals! PRISM isn't comparable. I mean Adele's going to outsell PRISM's total sales in its first week on sale worldwide and I'm not kidding. Considering how well "Hello" was recieved, I can see the album being a monster seller this Christmas, with "Hello" staying at #1 at least 5-6 weeks. Adele's current hype/record-breaking success is a big sign that this album is going to do well. She's made herself the #1 artist in the world and I don't think it matters what she releases, she'll get strong support from Triple A/HAC/AC at the very least and those formats will continue to fuel album sales. All she needs to deliver is good material and she'll smash it - which she is going to do. One thing you have to remember as well is that the album and single releases are eligible for the 2017 grammy awards. So the album campaign is going to be over the next year or so. It's actually rather exciting that we could possibly see a repeat of the success of 21 with this album.

I know this a bit off-topic, but Hello is now officially the #1 song in the UK charts. Here starts the domino chain of worldwide chart dominance! Billboard will be next!

Yeah, it's already confirmed #1 in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand (and Australia's will be out later tonight) for instance. And probably others I haven't checked.

Katy with Prism and Gaga with Born This Way. They both had massive hype surrounding their first singles and eventually the hype died off and the era became a more standard pop era. Obviously you can't compare 25's sales to Prism or Born This Way cause it would blow both albums out of the water. Adele will sell massive amounts regardless but it's possible that by April things will have slowed down and 25 becomes a more average era. The same thing will most likely happen to Taylor during her next era.

It's actually rather exciting that we could possibly see a repeat of the success of 21 with this album. I'm hoping for a great album in '25' - my point is that one single doesn't determine an era. Katy made a huge mistake in picking UnC over DH. Same as GaGa with 'Judas.' (Taylor will face the same challenge during her next pop era.) It's just incredibly difficult to match a landmark era for any artist. As far as radio, they may pick up whatever ADELE releases on certain formats, but it is POP that will end up determining mega-blockbuster status. But, I haven't been excited about seeing how an era plays out in a long time and a lot of is tied to the fact that ADELE is a unique popular artist in this climate.

What if ADELE releases her Unconditionally next instead of a more sure-fire one? I'm not that sure of that. People blame Unconditionally, but the truth is Unconditionally was only a mistake because people wanted Black Horse. If they would release Black Horse as second single, probably (at least it's what i think) would do better, anyway, Unconditionally did better than Birthday and This is how we do. Big big eras are difficult to follow, Prism sold well (and Katy is not that big on albums). Match 21 is almost impossible, anyway Adele has an advantage, if think go well, i'm pretty sure she'll promote this album better. She spent a lot of time without releasing a video for Someone like you, and never took the effort to make one for Set fire to the rain. 21 had more legs, Turning tables would be a top 10 hit (or at least top 20 hit) for sure, and there were a good bunch of songs of that album that could keep it selling for a good while. Of course she didn't need the effort, because the album continued selling even with her retired from the spotlight. It will be very difficult to match or even get close to that, but she started on a great note. Now it seems impossible, but if Hello failed we could be talking about something very different right now, and it's not that difficult to fail the shot
