May I ask why people pay a lot of attention to top "40" instead of top "50"? Thanks Because top 40 is the point to where a song is considered a "hit" I assume.

Actually comes from the popularization of "top 40" radio which had its birth from countdown shows.
Never bought into the whole a peak at #40 is a hit but #41 is not bit.

In general where a song lands on the Top 100 defines or is a good indication if it's a hit. But not always. Not sure a song that goes to #40 is really a hit. But also depends on how we're defining a hit record. Lots of different ways.
I always think of It Takes Two by Rob Base DJ EZ Rock. Only went to #36, but sold millions of copies, and a case could be made its one of the most popular hip hop / rap songs ever over the years.

Just for comparison, here are all 112 songs that debuted within the top 40 on Billboard's Hot 100 from the week after the first publication in August 1958 until the beginning of the SoundScan era in December 1991. Debuts marked in red set the record for highest debut at the time. The Beatles' debut at #6 was later broken by Michael Jackson/Janet Jackson with "Scream/Childhood" (#5, 1995), then later the same year by Michael Jackson with "You Are Not Alone" (#1, 1995) as listed in the original post. 1958 40 Tommy Edwards It's All In The Game 1958 30 Elvis Presley One Night 1958 39 Paul Anka My Heart Sings 1959 33 Elvis Presley I Need Your Love Tonight 1960 37 Jeanne Black He'll Have To Stay 1960 35 Elvis Presley Are You Lonesome Tonight 1960 40 Rosie & The Originals Angel Baby 1961 24 Elvis Presley Surrender 1963 40 Four Seasons Walk Like A Man 1964 27 Beatles Can't Buy Me Love 1964 21 Beatles A Hard Day's Night 1964 22 Beatles I Feel Fine 1965 12 Herman' Hermits Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter 1965 39 Supremes I Hear A Symphony 1965 36 Beatles We Can Work It Out 1966 25 Beatles Nowhere Man 1966 28 Beatles Paperback Writer 1966 40 Rolling Stones Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow? 1966 30 Royal Guardsmen Snoopy vs. The Red Baron 1967 32 Monkees A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You 1967 33 Monkees Daydream Believer 1968 24 Monkees Valleri 1968 23 Beatles Lady Madonna 1968 10 Beatles Hey Jude 1968 38 Beatles Revolution 1968 34 Marvin Gaye I Heard It Through The Grapevine 1968 35 Aretha Franklin See Saw 1969 10 Beatles & Billy Preston Get Back 1969 40 Beatles Don't Let Me Down 1969 20 Beatles Something 1969 23 Beatles Come Together 1970 06 Beatles Let It Be 1970 35 Beatles The Long and Winding Road/For You Blue 1970 40 Jackson 5 I'll Be There 1971 40 Rolling Stones Brown Sugar 1971 20 John Lennon Imagine 1976 40 Stevie Wonder I Wish 1978 35 Bee Gees Too Much Heaven 1978 40 Rod Stewart Da Ya Think I'm Sexy 1979 29 Bee Gees Tragedy 1979 38 Wings Goodnight Tonight 1979 37 Bee Gees Love You Inside Out 1979 33 Eagles The Long Run 1980 38 Billy Joel It's Still Rock and Roll To Me 1980 40 Doobie Brothers Real Love 1980 39 Kenny Rogers Lady 1980 32 Neil Diamond Love On The Rocks 1980 38 John Lennon Starting Over 1980 30 Bruce Springsteen Hungry Heart 1981 36 John Lennon Woman 1981 31 Styx The Best Of Times 1981 37 Don McLean Crying 1981 32 Neil Diamond Hello Again 1981 38 James Taylor & J.D. Hmmm. Wonder if it debuted at 101 or something then to 40. Swear it was that song that climbed 100-40.

If the Hot 100 was based on Soundscan in 1988, "It Takes Two" would have probably been top 5. And the Beastie Boys #1; Etc, etc...

Didn't Nicki debut and peak at #5 with "Starships"? "Starships" debuted at #9 on the issue date March 3, 2012. It would go on to peak at #5 five weeks later on the issue date April 7, 2012. Interesting enough, despite peaking in it's 6th week. The song didn't leave the Top 10 until the issue date July 28, 2012, spending overall 21 weeks in the Top 10. Which means 15 of the 21 week run was spent after peaking (which is amazing for a song that never went #1).

Think about this: 38% of the #4 debuts in Billboard’s history all occurred last year.

Impressive stat: with RFI, Taylor has debuted at each spot of the top 10 except #5. She had two songs debut at #6, so she’s been quite close!!

Post Malone Joins Elite List of Acts With Multiple Debuts at No. 1 or 2 on Hot 100Eminem is the only other rapper to achieve the feat. Post Malone becomes the ninth artist to have debuted more than one song in the top two positions of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His latest single, "Psycho," featuring Ty Dolla $ign, arrives at No. 2 on the Hot 100 dated March 10. It follows his smash "Rockstar," featuring 21 Savage, which debuted at No. 2 on the chart dated Oct. 7, 2017, and climbed to No. 1 three weeks later, ruling for eight total weeks. Post Malone is just the second rapper to achieve the feat, joining Eminem, who has earned two top-two Hot 100 entrances, both in 2010. "Psycho" opens with 54.9 million U.S. streams, 80,000 downloads sold and 10.3 million radio audience impressions in its first tracking week, according to Nielsen Music. In total, 51 titles have debuted at Nos. 1 or 2 on the Hot 100, with eight acts having launched at either of those ranks at least twice. Malone and Eminem join Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Boyz II Men, the only group to achieve the feat twice. Bieber and Carey hold the record for the most top two debuts: five apiece. (Three of Carey's hits bowed at No. 1, compared to two for Bieber.) Carey was also the first artist to notch multiple top-two starts, as she achieved the feat in 1995 with "Fantasy" and her Boyz II Men collab "One Sweet Day." Notably, "Psycho" is the 22nd song to debut at No. 2 on the Hot 100 (to go along with 29 No. 1 openings). Of the first 21 tracks before "Psycho" to start in the runner-up spot, over half, 11, went on to reach No. 1, including Malone's own "Rockstar." In alphabetical order, here are all the artists who have debuted at least two titles at Nos. 1 or 2 on the Hot 100. Debut Position, Title, Debut Date (* denotes song went on to hit No. 1) Justin BieberNo. 1, "What Do You Mean?," Sept. 19, 2015 No. 1, "I’m the One" (DJ Khaled feat. Bieber & MO), Aug. 13, 2016 Boyz II Men

^I was using an old book: Billboard Top 10 Charts for the Hot 100 1958-1997 FYI - i have all the Whitburn Hot 100 books for each decade at home. Seems like I'm never near them when I want to answer a question or verify something on here, dammit! I also have the books with all the singles chart info by artist. Hoping a new edition drops this year - I think the last one came out in 2015.

January 20: Filthy February 3: God's Plan, Diplomatic Immunity February 10: Say Something February 17: Pray For Me February 24: Look Alive March 10: Psycho
7 top 10 debuts and we're only 16 weeks into the chart year (and 11 weeks into the 2018 weeks). Has there ever been a year with this many top 10 debuts so early on?

Which means 15 of the 21 week run was spent after peaking (which is amazing for a song that never went #1). It was also the song that established the record for most weeks in the top ten for a top ten debut. Later tied by Sugar, What Do you Mean and Sorry. Then surpassed by Love Yourself then Closer. Ahh the famous "Starships" record. Totally irrelevant, but where did "Needed Me" peak? I know it never peaked higher than #7 but it also spent months in the top 10.

Funny how Rihanna's only top 2 debut was Love The Way You Lie. Rihanna's never been one to debut super high, especially around the time of We Found Love or Diamonds, because most of her hits were powered by airplay, the slowest component to catch on. Taylor Swift would have had three top two debuts but Mine leaked early and forced them to release it early, which resulted in a #3 debut. Also, that song she did for the Valentine's Day movie was so bad (and so frontloaded), that it feels wrong to see it there.
