I must say, I am liking the surprise album releases. I think it actually fares better for the artists, especially if they are A-list status. I hate how you get a lead single, then album announcement for 6 months later. In the meantime, you hear snippets of songs and hear insider reviews of the music that could alter your expectations. The surprise album I think most fans will just run and get it.
But I like the album, it's "artsy, coffeehouse" Eric Church , and thats fine with me. I like how he never gives us the same stuff and keeps his fans guessing. Unlike some other artists. It's toned down, and like always, the songwriting is superb. I am wondering though, reading his comments on the album, he wrote and recorded this thing just in the last 30 days, and said inspiration struck him. Eric is always talking about albums taking him a whole year to complete. I wonder if this is his surprise release of artistic surplus, and then he'll give us a more detailed release next year?? Something to think about, I hear a few single possibilities here but not much

Title track, the performance last night was awesome too. Great song with a good message to boot
Mixed Drinks About Feelings: Another great track, who is that singing with him?
Knives of New Orleans: For some reason, cannot get this song out of my head. The melody is infectious.
Holding My Own
Three Year Old: I have a 3 year old my self, and this song is so true. I had to listen multiple times to grasp the song, very good
Didn't dislike anything, the above is just the songs I am gravitating towards right now. 5 stars out of 5, just for the sheer surprise

My vinyl copy and CD came in the mail last night. Just holy cow.......WAY different from the Outsiders. I liked that album, don't get wrong.....but this one is like 1000x better! I really can't find a ton to criticize here....... "Chattanooga Lucy" is officially my jam now lol.

This is just incredible. Better than Outsiders and right up there with Chief for me already. Not one mediocre song. Everything is great. These are the 3 best for me:
"Mr. Misunderstood" is an anthem. Great message, great rock n roll/old country feel to it, love the production and hopefully it'll be a big hit.
"Mixed Drinks and Feelings" gives me an old school Willie Nelson feel...what a song that is, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see it be a single at some point.
"Knives of New Orleans"....WOW. One of his deepest songs, sounds like it came straight off a Springsteen album, and gosh, so much emotion from him on this song.

So according to this, the physical CD will be available in stores that sell music starting tomorrow. IS THE ALBUM AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC? Yes. Fan club members received it first but it is available everyone to purchase on iTunes starting today (Wednesday, November 4th) at 7:30pm CST and physically available first at the Mr. Misunderstood Pop-Up Store in East Nashville immediately following the CMA Awards and in stores everywhere music is sold on Friday, November 6th. ericchurch.com/mrmisunderstood/faq |

Gave this a quick listen tonight and this is easily my favorite Eric Church album to date, and one of my top five favorite albums of 2015. So far my favorite songs are "Mixed Drinks About Feelings," "Knives of New Orleans," "Kill a Word," and "Holdin' My Own." I'm going to give the album a closer listen this weekend to feel it out. The pure rawness of this album is what it makes it stand out...very solid.

My Target store had it, had a service rep go hunt me down a copy and he found one in the storeroom. It cost me $13.99 and they only had one copy!!! LUCKY!!!!! But ya, it's really not on sell at Target for a decent price. I think it should be $9.99 since there are 10 songs and $1 a song, would be more appropriate, so ya I think it was overpriced a little bit.
SPOILER: The booklet doesn't even list the songwriters for the songs but just pictures of the album cover art and etc.

"Knives of New Orleans". Some are confused as to what it's about, I'm *pretty* sure it's about a man who killed/drowned his girlfriend into Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans? I think that's what it is. I like this album more and more each listen. Record Year is gonna be huge for him if/when released.

After one listen, I think this album is pretty strong. I'm going to have to listen to it a few more times to absorb it all, but I think it might be one of my ten most favorite albums I heard this year.

Haven't listened to the whole thing, but I've found that "Record Year" and "Round Here Buzz" are the best of the bunch for me.

The more I listen to this, I think Record Year could be a smash. It's very radio friendly and for anyone that loves music and understands the healing power of music, it really resonates. The lyrics are awesome and paint such a vivid picture for me.

Cole Swindell and Miranda have both openly praised the song, and after hearing the lyrics more, I could see it being a Springsteen-type smash. Without a doubt should be the second single. |

2. Round Here Buzz (I predict this will be the biggest hit off the album)
3. Record Year
4. Knives of New Orleans (Wasn't sure what to pick for 4th, but its Eric so I bet we get at least one peculiar single choice)
If I was picking singles, I'd keep the first three and release "Three Year Old" as the 4th and final single.

Ok I finally give my review on this album. And, I can't believe i'm saying this. But, I love most of it. I haven't liked any of his albums since his first masterpiece album. But, this one beats the rest of his records.

This album is simply sublime.
I didn't believe he could pull off something of this magnitude after "Chief"and "The Outsiders".
Plays non-stop; and I'm loving every minute of it.

I finally got around to listening to this one tonight, and wow, what a great album. Eric has never disappointed me, and this might be his best batch of songs yet. I'm on my 3rd listen of the album right now, and my early favorites are the title track, "Mixed Drinks About Feelings", "Round Here Buzz", "Kill A Word", and "Record Year".
I think "Mr. Misunderstood" will bring Eric back to the top of the airplay charts, and he's got several great choices for follow-up singles.
Really great lyrics and production here -- as usual, Eric isn't spitting out formulaic radio ear candy, and I love him for it. Over the last few years he's quickly become one of my favorites. Most of the big mainstream stars aren't nearly as creative as Eric.

I finally got this album today, and I quite like it. It isn't all that commercial, I don't think, but I imagine Eric will have radio success with it (kind of big hit/minor hit alternating like he got last time). Initially, I'm really liking the title track, "Three Year Old", "Knives Of New Orleans" and "Mixed Drinks About Feelings" the most, but there's not a song I don't like.

I thought the album was ok, but I didn't love it. Church is hit or miss; I loved Springsteen and Like Jesus Does (to some extent Talladega and Give Me Back My Hometown), but songs such as Like a Wrecking Ball and The Outsiders were meh. Like I said, I may have to re-listen to it again. |
