Rumor Mill: Apple May Ditch Headphone Jack for Next iPhone 12/1/2015 by Marc Schneider Appleβs quest to make iPhones even thinner may come at the expense of those sweet headphones you bought on Cyber Monday. The latest report in the Apple rumor sack is that the company may chop the 3.5mm headphone jack from next yearβs iPhone 7, a move that would require adapters to use old cans and usher in a market for Lightning-only accessories. According to Japanese blog MacOtakara, Apple is looking into the idea because it wants a slimmer iPhone -- by one millimeter, possibly -- and doing so would potentially leave too little room for the standard jack. Replacing the 3.5mm would be EarPods with Appleβs Lightning connector, which would transmit audio digitally as opposed to the old analog way. A move to Lightning would instantly make the iPhone incompatible with the vast majority of wired headphones on the market, and would require an adapter. One solution would be for Apple to include the converter with the iPhone 7, along with a new pair of EarPods. However, when Apple has made similar changes in the past -- from 30-pin data port to Lightning connectors, nixing USB ports in the new MacBook, etc. -- it just goes for it, and awaits your next visit to the Apple Store. As many blogs have pointed out, a new port would complicate how you charge your phone and listen to audio at the same time. One solution would be youβd have to buy a splitter with two ports, or as Business Insider speculates, Apple could also add a second Lightning jack to the iPhone 7 and subsequent models. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Source

Lightning headphones. They'd plug into the power slot.

Yeah, this would be the thing to make me not get another iPhone. I like iPhones and am on my third one and while I've had my share of annoyances with Apple's software (and some hardware, I guess), they've still been reliable and I'm comfortable with how everything I have syncs so well and is organized the way I like it but if this rumour is true, I'd have to be fine switching over to another phone when the time comes.

This isn't a big change for me but why not just go wireless?

Ugh I love using my headphones with my iPhone, as well as hooking my iPhone to my car stereo. I know without change, there is no progress, but some stuff is just better left alone. There is really no point in doing this.
My iPhone is the first phone I have ever had that I absolutely love and have never had any trouble with. Leave it alone APPLE!

That'd be stupid IMO Rather than slimmer just increase the screen size and reduce the length. I still use my iPhone 4 and will change it t the 6 next month, but I was more hesitant to change because of the height not the depth of the device.

Apple's obsession with making their phones thin is annoying. The 6/6s is the perfect size. If they go thinner than that, it will be uncomfortable to hold.

Honestly, I think they want them to be so thin and flimsy that they keep breaking so people have to keep buying new ones to replace them because that's how they are.

They need to get the internals as flat as possible because the next wave in cell phones is going to be foldable/bendable screens. It would totally be Apple's MO to just ditch the jack and make everybody switch. They did it with the lightning jack and with the new macbook air plugs, so why not with the earphone jack?
With high end headphones going wireless anyway, it's not that big of a deal anyhow.

lol and I've actually seen people defend this as "innovation" lmao What, you don't find this an innovative way to get Apple fans to buy more product? Now it's not just a new iPhone, it's a new iPhone AND new EarPods AND new Lightning connectors/adapters to work with other electronics AND new jack adapters for old headphones. Apple is running the game on y'all Admittedly I'm not an Apple user so it's easy for me to scoff at it, but I know it's not just them. The 3.5mm jack is going to get phased out eventually (while Apple has Lightning, Google and Android have been eyeing USB audio). So I'm just curious to see if this jackless iPhone really takes off. If so, it could be the big push toward making that obsolescence happen.

Ugh. Apple, please don't make my cheap ass reach for a $200 pair of headphones. I'm content with my cheap-o $20 buds from Amazon.

I would be most affected in my car - I do not have bluetooth audio in my car, so I just use the aux input and the headphone jack. I use it ALL THE TIME and I don't think it'll work without the headphone jack. I hope they don't do this.

I use it ALL THE TIME and I don't think it'll work without the headphone jack. I hope they don't do this. The only thing that it will affect is the charging aspect unless they have a split peripheral to coincide with it. There will still be a AUX jack available to use with the technology but it will be one way. Audio out but with no charge capabilities in association with the source. This was the issue with older phones that didn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack. You could either listen to your music or use the port for charging. With this type of thing they probably want to move towards wireless charging with all future devices like what's available to Android/ Window devices without the need for a special case.

I can't tell if this is a few years too ahead of its time, or just stupid.
I'm a loyal iPhone owner, but I can't imagine buying a phone without a headphone jack.

I mean, have wireless headphones greatly improved over the past two years? I tried wireless and they were great inside. But as soon as I went outside to run, they were worthless. I pretty much need a headphone jack for that.

Would not need wireless necessarily. They would make you buy new headphones with a lightning connector

Supply Chain Rumors Reaffirm iPhone 7 Will Not Have Headphone JackMonday January 4, 2016 9:22 pm PST by Joe Rossignol Six weeks ago, Japanese website Mac Otakara reported that Apple is planning to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7 in favor of an all-in-one Lightning connector for both connectivity and audio output. Adding fuel to the rumor, Chinese websites Anzhuo.cn [Google Translate] and Wei Feng [Google Translate] cite supply chain news from unnamed sources that reportedly confirm the controversial rumor is true. Both websites claim the iPhone 7 will not have a headphone jack, and that Apple will release its own wireless Bluetooth headphones, but the unverified reports should be treated with caution until or unless additional sources verify these claims -- nevertheless, they do make for interesting discussion. Mac Otakara's original report said Apple may release Lightning-equipped EarPods, and the company already offers Powerbeats 2, Solo2 and Studio wireless headphones through its Beats brand. Apple also introduced new MFi Program specifications in June 2014 that allow third-party manufacturers to create Lightning-equipped headphones, including the Philips Fidelio M2L and Fidelio NC1L. The original report, which cited a "reliable source," also claimed the new same-sized Lightning connector will have a DAC, or digital-to-analog converter, for backwards compatibility with wired headphones using standard 3.5mm stereo jacks. A 3.5mm to Lightning adapter would be required. The rumor has led to speculation that Apple could introduce wireless charging on the iPhone 7, as users would be unable to charge the smartphone and use Lightning-equipped headphones at once. On the contrary, there is always the real possibility this rumor is false and that Apple has no plans to ditch the headphone jack. Should this rumor prove to be true, however, the decision will likely be as controversial as Apple's move to the Lightning connector over its legacy 30-pin dock connector. MacRumors ran a Twitter poll that showed 59% of 7,542 respondents preferred the 3.5mm headphone jack over an all-in-one Lightning connector. www.macrumors.com/2016/01/05/iphone-7-no-headphone-jack-supply-chain/

With the rumors it seems that they are eliminating the headphone jack but will have a lightning to audio accessory. Apple wants to push Beats wireless headphones and new "AirPod" ear phones that will use technology that will be specific for just Apple products
