I just came across the Lady Gaga Born This Way thread from 2011 and saw lots of excitement and fun leading up to the release (and understandably so...I love Gaga). Anyways, I was wondering what song, in your opinion, could generate such big excitement in the future. What artist and why? :)

Perhaps with Taylor Swift's new single from her next album.

No, it didn't (I'm not talking about sales and radio, I'm talking about the buildup), and I say this as a compliment to Adele's song. If by BTW "excitement" you mean teased and blown into the high heavens for well over half a year, than hopefully never. The hype over this hurt her in the long run more than anything else.

We didn't have the length, sure, but the anticipation between the premiere of that trailer to the premiere of the song was definitely something we had not seen since "Born This Way."

^but wasn't that like...2 weeks? If even that?
I'm not saying Adele's single wasn't insanely anticipated, it would be ridiculous to suggest otherwise, but it's a very different type of example. Adele herself also pointed out her preferences in specifically not doing a long build-up on her part, which is the exact opposite of the route that Gaga and Interscope took.

Hello still had insane hype and anticipation regardless of how drawn out it wasn't though, I think that's the point. Even before there was an announcement, there was still a lot of talk about her new era starting. People couldn't wait for new Adele, whatever that was.

^I got the point. But my main point about BTW was that the duration of how long the buildup was stretched out directly from their side was a key factor. No other lead single in recent times has had that.

If looking at those who can generate as much hype as Gaga in her peak (Taylor, Beyonce, Adele), none of them would try to build that much hype, tbh.
Taylor's hype creating strategy is very spread out, from the beginning to the end of the era, so I doubt she will ever do that.
Beyonce don't give a fuck, period.
Adele worries about media overexposure so much that I'm sure she wouldn't do much of pre-release hype herself and let the public become their own hype machine instead.

All she has to do is say I have new music coming out and there's instant buzz and excitement and anticipation. Her music speaks for itself.
