I was wondering if we could go through and figure out the artists whose first charting song went #1.
This year we've had Zayn and Desiigner. A few years in the past we had Meghan Trainor, Iggy Azalea, Magic, OMI. I was wondering if somebody had a definitive list. And if not, we could probably get started on one.
1958:
Ricky Nelson Domenico Modugno The Elegants Tommy Edwards Conway Twitty The Kingston Trio The Teddy Bears The Chipmuns

I only meant the Hot 100, not the pre-1958 chart. The ones in 1958 are just technicalities, but I thought I'd start at the beginning.

There's a thread about Billboard chart records/trivia, you'd probably get more help there (or there might already be a list).
Generally this forum tends to add posts to existing threads rather than creating new threads.

Tiffany Right Said Fred Lisa Loeb Mr. Big *George Michael - Careless Whisper is credited to Wham featuring George and was George's first time being listed as an artist on the Hot 100. P.M. Dawn Wilson Phillips EMF Mariah Carey Ini Kamoze Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch Alannah Myles Sinead O'Connor Roxette Nelson Vanilla Ice C+C Music Factory Londonbeat The Heights Extreme Snow *UB40 - Red Red Wine charted in 1983 as their first Hot 100 hit, and it eventually went to #1... just not until another single and re-release 5 years later. *Sheriff - Same scenario as UB40, without the hit in between. Montell Jordan Los del Rio Spice Girls Hanson *Will Smith - Gettin Jiggy Wit It was not his first H100 hit, but as solo act Will Smith it was... and Wild Wild West wasn't eligible to chart on the Hot 100. Divine George Harrison Rick Astley Bobby McFerrin Escape Club Gregory Abbott Club Nouveau *Starship - Essentially an established band with several previous H100 hits, just renamed, so....? Cutting Crew Lionel Richie Pet Shop Boys Peter Cetera The Human League *USA for Africa - one-time group Simple Minds Ready For The World a-ha Stevie Wonder Jan Hammer (i think?) Marilyn Martin - duet with Phil Collins John Waite Men At Work Dexys Midnight Runners Eurythmics Michael Sembello Bonnie Tyler Joan Jett Vangelis Toni Basil Blondie Stars on 45 Captain & Tennille
I'm assuming these are correct since we're talking specifically about the Hot 100, so any other charts (US or elsewhere) wouldn't matter, right? Here's the thing, there are new acts who go to #1 with their debut single, and then there are other more established acts who go to #1 after several failed singles and finally chart on the Hot 100. They're 2 different things, really, especially when previous hits charted on Bubbling Under. And then of course there are acts that charted previously with other names/bands, etc... like George Harrison and George Michael, for example.
Anyway, the above is me going through the 80s and 90s #1s. It's probably not perfect, but that's my contribution. :)

They released a single nationally in 1968 that failed to chart But the OP said "whose first charting song went #1. ". I take that to mean it doesn't matter if a first single did not chart at all (on the Hot 100).

2013: Nate Ruess ("Just Give Me A Reason") Lorde ("Royals") Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ("Thrift Shop") *can someone validate that none of their other songs had charted prior to this?
2014: (note: I don't think "Fancy" was Iggy Azalea's first song to chart) Magic! ("Rude") Meghan Trainor ("All About That Bass")
2015: Mark Ronson ("Uptown Funk") Charlie Puth ("See You Again") Omi ("Cheerleader")
2016: Zayn ("Pillowtalk") Desiigner ("Panda")

It was her first time on the chart, so it counts. That's fine. Wasn't questioning that. Was questioning the word "country".

^ Thrift Shop was indeed their first Hot 100 hit to chart, so it qualifies.

Billy Ocean first charted with "Love Really Hurts Without You", a #22 hit on the Hot 100 in 1976. Also, I wouldn't say George Michael belongs on the list...Wham! first charted on the Hot 100 with "Bad Boys" (#60 in 1983) and as a solo artist he first charted with "A Different Corner" (#7 in 1986). Unless you're counting "Careless Whisper" being credited to Wham! featuring George Michael. Technically being featured on the third chart hit for his own group, before the launch of his solo career, seems like a dodgy inclusion.

oh yeah, i overlooked the 70s box on wiki. thanks. i'll remove him.
as for george michael - there's a lot of debatable technicalities in my list. i didn't discriminate.
although i'm sure there's an argument there given Careless Whisper was the first time his name appeared as an artist on the Hot 100.

2013: 2014: (note: I don't think "Fancy" was Iggy Azalea's first song to chart) Magic! ("Rude") Meghan Trainor ("All About That Bass") Fancy was her first charting single on the Hot 100. Both Work and Change Your Life were on the Bubbling Under chart and it wasn't until the success of Fancy that Work got a second wind.

That and the fact that "Careless Whisper" was a solo single. I believe the U.S. was one of the only territories where it was released with Wham! mentioned, likely to capitalize on the duo's name being more recognizable than Michael's at that time.

I thought Same Love charted in Fall 2012 before Thrift Shop blew up? I remember him performing that on Ellen before he became huge. Maybe it was Bubbling Under??

Not sure if it bubbled under first, but Same Love didn't debut on the H100 until February 2013, while Thrift Shop debuted in September of 2012.
