So we go straight from a song that got me into music in the first place to a current song. “You Don’t Own Me” is actually a song that is quite interesting for me. The memory for this song is literally BEFORE the song even charted… It was during that one drive my mom took me on during a weekend after Spring Break 2016 and before AP testing (April 2016 - when “7 Years” was ousting “My House” from the apex aka the beginning of era 5) that got me into “Cry Baby” and really allowed “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Sit Still, Look Pretty” to bound on my chart (I think I talked about it in “Cry Baby”). It was way back then when I first heard this song, but I really disliked it back then. I felt the song was too forced and Grace’s voice was a bit annoying. Also, G-Eazy’s rap verses, which I really liked (and cuz G-Eazy’s one of my favorite rappers lol, especially because he grew up in the same county I live in - Alameda County, CA), weren’t in the SiriusXM edit. So I didn’t chart the song, but as it started charting on BB and local radio started playing the G-Eazy version, I turned out to really like this song. Grace’s voice seemed to get less annoying as I learned to appreciate the melodic composition. As summer 2016 began, I started listening to this song a bit during summer PE class, so this started charting again, but didn’t even gain much traction until I learned that this would be in the “Suicide Squad” soundtrack, causing it to bound all the way up to #22. It’s also looking to have a pretty slow fall in the recent era, and it’s still in the top 50. We’ll see if this gets enough points to make the next all time chart, but definitely expect more “You Don’t Own Me” in my YE charts! This song still reminds me of that one drive, though “Cry Baby”, “SSLP”, and “DLMD” could be considered more representative… and it was a pretty prominent song during Summer PE as well, so I guess you can consider either instance as my most memorable experience with this song.
And lol, my descriptions are getting too long again, you can literally see the progression in length as each description gets longer lmao (well this one is shorter than "Love Me Harder" but oh well...) :)
“Don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
Please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display”
