Drake will repeat at #1 on next week’s Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) chart for his sixth week in a row, longer than any male solo artist in at least the last ten years. Previously, Michael Bublé (2011), Eminem (2010) and Josh Groban (2007) all held down the #1 spot for five consecutive weeks. Paul Simon will likely take #1 on the Album Sales chart. This sort of reinforces the inclusion of streaming into the album chart. I would love to see Paul Simon notch another #1 album...but clearly "Views" is MUCH bigger right now than the new Paul Simon record.

Ridiculous that there's no prediction for Tegan and Sara. Obviously they are able to reach 20-30k and possibly go top ten when Heartthrob reached #3 with 49k.

What's there deal? do they have their eyes set on Top 40. I kind of felt like they were trainwreckage. I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen. It's not that they were bad just kind of nerdy. It was one of the first things I saw this morning so maybe my coffee hadn't kicked in yet. lol |

While it's relatively easy for a legacy act to score a #1 in sales (in many cases acts are scoring their first ever #1 album after 20, 30, 40+ years of charting) it's really only because sales are relatively dire compared to what they once were and what they once represented. Pure sales (and subsequent rank) are no longer a proper gauge of popularity or how "big" something is - in most cases. While some still want to hold onto pure sales as a "thing"... for me, those days are long gone. It's like if the Hot 100 consisted solely of sales. It's only part of the equation. |

The Hot 100, though, has always been based on a combination of factors. RE Paul Simon- it's not like his album's figure will challenger for lowest No. 1 tally. Granted, it's not huge, but it's still a viable showing. My issue with SPS and BB 200 as it is- aside from it including information that does not align with what the main album chart's always been about- is that the information, no matter how it's distributed, counts toward two charts. Why not add album sales to the Hot 100 mix, while you're at it, ya know? The multi-metric chart itself is interesting, but I wouldn't classify it as an albums chart. For my records (and not because Madonna landed a ninth No. 1-selling album  ), I'm more interested in the Album Sales chart. |

The Hot 100 may have always been more than one metric, so to be more specific, it's like not including streaming in the Hot 100 in today's world. Again, sales are only part of the equation and ultimately album 'popularity' requires a bigger picture at this point. That was my point. Ultimately, there will come a day when we won't be able to hold onto pure album sales as a viable thing with any real substance to it - it's becoming like Hot Singles Sales is now in a sense... obsolete on its own. I think many feel this day has already come, including me. |

I get holding on to it though because historically the 200 album chart has only ever been sales, no matter how those sales were made whether vinyl, tape, cd, digital, it was always sales. So the Top Selling Album was really the only measurement of album popularity since albums became a thing. But now albums are less of a thing and it's more about collections of songs in the digital streaming format. So to account for the change in how we (as a collective) consume music, the 200 chart has been repurposed to no longer being the best selling but the most consumed. It's a tricky thing to move from. But as you said (@broccoli), album sales are becoming a less significant factor for everyone compared to any point since they began to matter so I guess at this point it's just about holding on to what once was - which isn't really productive.

I'm all for keeping a pure album sales chart. It's still worthy of existing and referencing, no question. It's just not an accurate gauge for which albums are the most popular in any given week... rendering it B-list.

It's interesting because pure album sales are a mark of a particular demographic, specifically older music fans who still buy their music while it's the younger music fans who stream. To discount the streaming component is to discount younger music fans, whereas to account for both the way it's done now (though the metrics and percentages are up for debate) is to include all music fans.

If I've learned anything from conversing with you today, it's to avoid using analogies because you focus on the analogies rather than the point, and take them far too literally, even when I say things like "in essence." It feels curiously like a debate tactic and/or a diversion tactic. I get it, you're not interested in the BB200 replacing pure album sales and won't be until you absolutely have to be. :) To each our own. |

That should go a long way in saying that the sales chart does not tell the whole story.

^But it probably hasn't for quite some years- and that goes for the Hot 100, too. Whether people recorded songs off the radio, borrowed vinyls/cassettes/CDs and made copies, up through illegal album downloads. It's been difficult to 100% reflect how people consume music. Albums from Drake, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, etc. are exceptions, as streaming has played an overwhelming factor in their multi-metric totals (with other acts, it could be just one or two tracks driving the bulk of streams, not to mention TEA). But, even as overall album totals have slumped, when we see some acts open with 400,000-plus of an album, that shows that the format- whether physical or digital- still has some life in it.
broc- I do get the point. :) I just prefer to look at Album Sales when looking at acts' statistics, comparing how acts' albums have performed/peaked, etc..
jeng- yes, in regard to album purchases. For overall popularity of act, which draws from multiple factors, there is something called the Artist 100. :)
In any event, it's nice to have two albums-oriented charts, as people have different chart interests.
