I am semi-torn on this. I think it sounds pretty good as-is for radio, but part of me wouldn't complain if we got a little bit more of the kick drum in the chorus. It's less of an issue than in Medicine, but there is still a lack of instrumental transition into the chorus to signify "HERE IS MY CHORUS" that helps on radio.

Nah, I’m so glad they didn’t try any cheap “let’s amp up a ballad” tricks for radio. I was worried about the news that they cut from the ending, but they did a seamless job with it. The climax is the high note anyway, not another set of ad libs, so I think this works well actually.

Hailee seems like one of the most inexperienced stars to advise on this show no? Does she even have an album?

Of course I'm at work so I can't listen to the radio edit. Ugh.

Hailee seems like one of the most inexperienced stars to advise on this show no? Does she even have an album? I thought that, too. And musically, she isn’t the most well-established pop star. BUT, she is a well-seasoned performer with big hits under her belt, and beyond music, she’s done exceptionally well in the acting field, which performers have to understand and practice in order to succeed as artists. So I don’t think Steinfeld is a bad choice, after some thought. (...but Kelly could’ve 100% gotten a way stronger mentor. I had super lowkey hopes that she’d somehow bring Carrie on, just because #stancard.)

A Kelly-Carrie team up would have left everyone shook--the two most successful reality TV recording artists ever on one team--but has Carrie ever done anything for the Voice? She seems a bit more protective of her Idol roots than most.
I don't know Hailee much, but she's young, cool, and would probably get more Spotify streams for random B-sides than Kelly did for "Love So Soft." So hopefully she'll sprinkle some Spotify fairy dust onto Kelly and that will be that.

I just *wish* upon wish this song was better. By their own admission its only real artistic structure is one that shows its range, as opposed to having intrinsic artistic merit. It needs to be/should be When I Was Your Man/Someone Like You quality, and it just...isn't.

I’ve just heard IDTAY for the first time. It really showcases her range and vocal abilities! While also being a doozy! Lol Sorry It does remind me a bit of Invincible in terms of its (lack of) pop sensibility. It’s chord progressions and overall melody are not catchy IMO and the high notes, albeit impressive, come across as too much, borderline jarring. I mean she gives Kesha’s Praying high note a run for its money, but Praying was catchier and its instrumentation made it more accessible. I wish I could be more positive, but this is not a good Pop single I would’ve preferred Heat or Medicine or even WLW... or a catchier ballad if he has recorded one for this album. This one was a disappointment. But good luck anyway!!

But yeah "Praying" is the superior song from a construction perspective. If Kelly had sung it, it'd be the perfect ballad single for this album. If "I Don't Think About You" can come close to its radio success, I'd be thrilled.

I think the message of the song will resonate with people. At least that is what I'm hoping.

I mean Kelly's high notes also have the advantage of actually being sung by a human being, as opposed to created on a computer.

That 2012 getting-ready-for-weekly-TV diet is back. She looks fantastic. I don’t know what Atlantic bribes her with to change stylists but it was worth it.

It needs to be/should be When I Was Your Man/Someone Like You quality, and it just...isn't. Agreed. It feels like they were aiming for a simple ballad with a focus on the emotional heft and delivery, but it is so busy vocally that there's no where for her or the listener to breathe. (Note that there is actually no breath after first "I don't think about you" in the chorus) I'd also throw in Adele's All I Ask, which has a run at the beginning of its chorus too, but then gives a big sweeping melody that's a lot more organic. The part that works best for me on that front is the bridge where the music is stripped down completely and her Ee Ee Ee Ee is much more tender.

Probably nothing since she's been with the same person full time since mid-2015 and sporadically before that. eta: This wasn't directed at you specifically, I just see it said often. Anyway, love that look last night.

But I am surprised it's the same person, considering some of the looks she was serving in 2015.

I'm not clicking those (I can't do it and mess up the look from last night) but I can probably positively say that those were the previous person's doing. ;) When the collars started appearing at events that year, that's when Candice was stepping in. She did the PbP and SHH videos and stuck with her full time after that. The wardrobe budget does look like it was bumped up a ton with this release though.

Homegirl was right on the money when she went for the all-black-and-gold aesthetic for this era.

Homegirl was right on the money when she went for the all-black-and-gold aesthetic for this era. The visual consistency and quality are the big changes for this era. Wrapped in Red was the other era that had a very identifiable and high-quality aesthetic for her.
