DJ Khaled scores his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as his latest release, Major Key, debuts in the top slot. The set earned 95,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 4, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 59,000 were in traditional album sales -- DJ Khaled’s largest sales week since 2007.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 20-dated chart (where Major Key is No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Major Key’s sales launch is DJ Khaled’s second-biggest week in his career -- his only larger frame was logged back in 2007, when We The Best bowed at No. 8 with 79,000 sold.

DJ Khaled made his Billboard 200 chart debut just over 10 years ago, with Listennn: The Album, which bowed on the June 24, 2006-dated list. The set peaked at its debut position, No. 12, and was the first of his nine charting albums to date.

He’s since scored seven top 10 albums, including Major Key. His highest charting album, until this week, was the No. 4 debut and peak of 2012’s Kiss the Ring.

Albums With the Most Weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Chart in the Last 25 Years -- From Drake's 'Views' to Adele's '21'

The new album was exclusively available in its first week of release through the Apple Music streaming service and for sale as a download through the iTunes Store. It became widely available through other streamers and digital retailers on Aug. 5. It will be make its CD bow on Aug. 12.

The album features a bevy of A-list collaborators, including Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nas, Future, 2 Chainz and even Meghan Trainor.

Major Key is Epic’s second No. 1 album in 2016, following Future’s EVOL, which opened atop the list dated Feb. 27.

The new album boasts DJ Khaled’s second-highest charting single ever on the Billboard Hot 100: “For Free,” featuring Drake. The tune has so far risen to No. 14 on the list, nearing the No. 10 peak of DJ Khaled’s highest-charting single, “I’m On One,” featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne, in 2011.

Drake’s Views dips from No. 1 to No. 2, after 12 nonconsecutive weeks atop the chart (80,000 units; down 5 percent). Might Views return to No. 1 for a 13th frame? If it does, it may not be in the short term, as early indications from industry forecasters suggest the new Suicide Squad soundtrack has a good chance of debuting at No. 1 next week. The multi-artist effort was released on Aug. 5, the same day its parent film was released in theaters.

Back on this week’s chart, Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface is steady at No. 3 with 39,000 units (up 8 percent).

DJ Khaled Heading for His First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart

Jake Owen notches his highest charting album ever, as American Love launches at No. 4 with 35,000 units (29,000 in traditional album sales). His previous high was tallied in 2011 when Barefoot Blue Jean Night debuted and peaked at No. 6 (with 55,000 sold in its first week). Owen recently snagged his eighth top 10 single on the Country Airplay chart with the new album’s “American Country Love Song,” which has so far peaked at No. 8.

Owen’s new album also bows at No. 1 on Top Country Albums -- his second leader following Barefoot Blue Jean Night.

Rihanna’s former No. 1, Anti, falls one rung to No. 5 on the new Billboard 200 with 32,000 units (down 2 percent). The album recently surpassed 500,000 in total U.S. sales. Each of the diva’s eight studio albums have now sold more than a half-million copies.

Fantasia achieves her fourth top 10 album with the arrival of The Definition Of… at No. 6 with nearly 32,000 units (29,000 in pure album sales). Her last release came just over three years ago, when Side Effects Of You debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the May 11, 2013-dated list. It was her second No. 2-peaking album, following 2010’s Back To Me. She also visited the top 10 with her debut effort, Free Yourself, which peaked at No. 8 in 2004. (One further album, her 2006 self-titled set, peaked at No. 10.)

The new album has launched two top 20-charting singles on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart: “No Time For It” (peaking at No. 6) and “Sleeping With the One I Love” (No. 17).

Hillary Scott & The Scott Family’s Love Remains debuts at No. 7 with 31,000 units (28,000 in traditional album sales). Scott -- of country trio Lady Antebellum -- also arrives at No. 2 on Top Country Albums and No. 1 on Top Christian Albums.

Scott is the second member of Lady Antebellum to chart their own side project away from the group in 2016 on Top Country Albums. She follows Charles Kelley’s The Driver, which peaked at No. 6. (Lady A’s third member, Dave Haywood, produced Post Monroe’s self-titled EP, which hit No. 42 in June.)

Adele’s 25 descends 7-8 on the latest Billboard 200 chart (29,000 units; up 1 percent), while Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest flies 24-9 with 28,000 units (up 88 percent). The latter is also up 127 percent in sales (to 23,000 sold for the week) thanks largely to a 99-cent sale price tag for the album in the Google Play store. (Shelton himself promoted the sale, via Twitter and Facebook. On the latter, he wrote: “Thanks to Google Play, my album costs less than a gallon of gas right now!”)

If I’m Honest’s download sales are unsurprisingly robust, owed to Google Play. It sold 16,000 digital copies -- a gain of 373 percent.

Closing out the Billboard 200’s new top 10 is the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton, which moves from No. 8 to No. 10 (27,000 units; down less than 1 percent).

DJ Khaled reigns from his throne surrounded by flowers and a lion as his Major Key album is his first to reach #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart. This is only the second week Drake’s VIEWS slips from that top spot since its release. Gucci Mane falls to #11 with a 61 percent drop in sales in the second week for Everybody’s Looking. The project, as well as ScHoolboy Q’s Blank Face LP both debuted at #2, unable to top the Toronto rapper.

DJ Khaled Gets “Major Key” To Commercial Success

DJ Khaled gets his first #1 album with the debut of Major Key, his ninth LP. The project has three songs in the Top 15 of the R&B and Hip Hop singles chart. He celebrated the accomplishment, along with the success of “For Free” with his fans on Instagram. Khaled’s last album, I Changed a Lot, opened at #12 when it dropped in November. His highest-charting project until now was 2012’s Kiss the Ring, which debuted at #4.


Drake Gets Bounced Again

Drake continues with 12 weeks at #1 after Khaled’s album took the top spot this week. Last week, VIEWS passed Taylor Swift’s mark for 1989, which saw 11 weeks at the spot. Drizzy still has “One Dance,” “Too Good” and “Controlla” charting high as well.

'Suicide Squad' Soundtrack on Course for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Chart 

The Suicide Squad soundtrack is sailing toward No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, according to industry forecasters. Those in the know suggest the set, which was released on Aug. 5 through WaterTower Music/Atlantic Records, may earn upward of 130,000 to 140,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 11.

If Suicide Squad bows atop the Billboard 200, it will mark the first chart-topping soundtrack in a year, since Disney Channel’s Descendants opened at No. 1 on the Aug. 22, 2015-dated list. The last theatrical film soundtrack to hit No. 1 was Pitch Perfect 2, which debuted in the top slot on the May 30, 2015, chart.

Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

August is kind of like the Sunday of months. If you’re a student or teacher, you’ve only got a precious amount of time left before you have to exchange your beach chair for a desk. Even if you’re neither of those things, you still want to pursue any last minute summer opportunity because before you know it it’s September, and from there it’s a roller coaster drop to the end of year. But I’m not here to be foreboding or a downer; rather, if you are feeling impeding pressure, just keep in mind how many great albums and tours are coming up in the next month alone. So don’t despair just yet, we’ve still got a good chunk of summer to enjoy and when it’s done, we’ll look to new things to get excited about.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Frank Ocean Returns After Three Years, Dr. Dre's U.S. Album Sales Surpass 15 Million

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Aug. 20), DJ Khaled notched his first No. 1 with the arrival of Major Key. The chart-topping debut bumped Drake’s Views out of the top slot after 12 nonconsecutive weeks. Elsewhere in the top 10, Jake Owen’s American Love bowed at No. 4, followed by Fantasia’s The Definition Of… at No. 6 and Hillary Scott & The Scott Family’s Love Remains at No. 7.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the latest Billboard 200 chart:

— Frank Ocean, Channel Orange - No. 146 — After more than three years off the chart, Frank Ocean’s debut album Channel Orange returns to the list at No. 146, following rumors that he was going to drop a new album on Aug. 5. While the new album didn’t materialize, Channel Orange comes back to the tally with 5,000 units earned during the week (up 40 percent). Channel Orange was last on the chart dated May 18, 2013. Further, Ocean’s total on-demand audio and video streams gained by 35 percent in the week ending Aug. 4 (rising to 7 million).

— Dr. Dre, Dr. Dre — 2001 - No. 195 — The hip-hop icon’s total album sales have now surpassed 15 million sold, according to Nielsen Music. (He crossed the threshold in the week ending July 28.) His biggest selling album is Dr. Dre — 2001 (No. 195 on the latest chart), which has moved 7.9 million copies. His second biggest seller is his debut effort, The Chronic, with 5.9 million sold (including its original release and later reissues and deluxe versions). His third solo studio album, Compton, has sold 535,000. (The remainder of the 15 million is comprised of compilation albums and archival releases like First Round Knockout and Concrete Roots.)

Dr. Dre — 2001 is the fifth biggest selling rap album in the U.S. since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. Ahead of it are 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ (8.4 million), Nelly’s Country Grammar (8.6 million), Eminem’s The Eminem Show (10.7 million) and Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP (11 million).

— Jason Derulo, Platinum Hits - No. 83 — Jason Derulo’s first best-of album, Platinum Hits, starts at No. 83 on the Billboard 200, granting the pop star his fifth entry on the list. The 12 song collection earned 7,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 4, of which 2,000 were in traditional album sales.

The low-key release is just the third new greatest hits album to debut on the Billboard 200 in 2016, following Paul McCartney’s Pure McCartney (No. 15, July 2) and Daughtry’s It’s Not Over… The Hits So Far (No. 43, March 5). Greatest hits albums have seen less success in recent years as consumers move away from buying hits collections and opt to buy a la carte tracks or create streaming playlists of their favorite hits.

Comparatively, at the same point 10 years ago, there were 18 new greatest hits albums that debuted on the chart between January and Aug. 19, 2006.

As for Derulo’s new effort, it offers up 11 of his previous singles along with one new track, “Kiss the Sky.” The latter tune will be heard in the animated film Storks, due out in theaters on Sept. 23.

All 10 of Derulo’s top 10-charting singles on the Mainstream Top 40 chart are on the set, including his four No. 1s: “Whatcha Say,” “In My Head,” “Talk Dirty” and “Want to Want Me.”

— Brett Eldredge, Illinois - No. 114 — The co-hosts of ABC’s CMA Music Festival (Aug. 3) — Brett Eldredge and Thomas Rhett — both earn gains with their latest albums. Eldredge’s Illinois is up 50 percent in units (to 6,000 for the week), Rhett’s Tangled Up gains by 3 percent (No. 31 with 14,000 units).

— Foreigner, Records - No. 154 — The band’s 1982 greatest hits album is back on the chart for the first time since 1983, thanks to interest driven by a $1.99 sale tag in the Google Play store. (The album re-entered the tally a week ago at No. 147, its first week on the list since June 11, 1983.) On the Catalog Albums chart, it hits a new peak, rising 8-7.
