Here is another one that everyone will disagree with me I am certain. Elton John - Candle In The Wind - blocked Usher - You Make Me Wanna - at number 1 for 7 weeks. You Make Me Wanna deserved number 1. I like Elton Johns songs, but Candle In The Wind IMO wasnt THAT good and the song was just hyped up IMO cause it was Elton John singing and making a comeback or something. Just my thoughts. The song was hyped up because it was a tribute to the late Princess Diana with re-worked lyrics specifically for her. It was a colossal musical moment. In fact, single wise, I can't say I've seen anything like it since and it remains the best selling single of all time*.
That said, I do prefer "You Make Me Wanna..." by far.
*That title could belong to "White Christmas," but who knows...

I don't hate One Sweet Day but I did hate that it blocked Not Gon' Cry, Sittin' Up In My Room, and Missing from #1 (and also would've loved to see Exhale at the top for another 11 weeks).

Cheap Thrills blocking Cold Water :( Personally don't think Bieber needs ANOTHER #1 for a lonnnnnnnng time after Sorry + Love Yourself dominating the charts. Cold Water is his best song by far IMO. And Major Lazer deserved that #1 :( (I really like MØ's part too) also, Sorry and Love Yourself were only #1 for a combined 5 weeks that's not a long time at all for two songs especially lol

I agree with the TMTC being blocked by Blank Space too. Sure I'll sing along to Blank Space, but I find it so overrated and I had had enough after the first 4-5 weeks at #1. And TMTC is great IMO and deserved a week at #1 (maybe the fact that BS blocked it made me feel more negatively towards Blank Space? Even though I don't actually hate it)

I don't love Starboy but it's a good song that doesn't deserve to be blocked by the awful Closer.

Closer blocking Heathens. Yeah, I can safely say the same myself. At least Heathens dealt a bit of karma on Hits 1's Weekend Countdown Also, while this isn't a proper example, Harlem Shake spending five weeks at #1 locked Thrift Shop out of more time at #1, which in turn would've resulted in a higher spot on the Decade-End Hot 100 AND making Greatest of All Time. Gah!!! Another one, if it weren't for Blurred Lines, Best Song Ever could have potentially debuted at #1. That would've been pretty cool. (Also, interestingly, Mirrors only had one week at #2, which was the week BEFORE Blurred Lines hit #1.)

I don't get all the massive hate for Closer :( I love the song I don't love Starboy but it's a good song that doesn't deserve to be blocked by the awful Closer. it's not in any way, shape or form awful though. I can see why it might not be the most interesting #1 but there has certainly been a multitude of much more unbearable songs at #1. Also technically there's still a really small chance for Starboy to hit #1 (and I hope it does even though I love Closer, Starboy deserves a turn at #1 especially since Cold Water and Heathens didn't)

I don't mind (no pun intended) Usher's "Burn" (I actually used to love it), but it blocked two songs that are IMO way better (I Don't Wanna Know and The Reason)

I like Eminem's "Lose Yourself" but I was pissed when it blocked Missy's "Work It" from #1 for 10 straight weeks!!
There was one of those week's where "Work It" was #2 and also the greatest airplay gainer, so I thought the next week it had a chance at #1, but alas it did not happen. Eminem was just too big :(
And when 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" blocked "Since U Been Gone" from #1. I never really saw what the big deal about "Candy Shop" was other than the fact that there was 50's follow-up to The Massacre.

You know what's crazy when you think about it?
In 2013, Get Lucky, a song by Daft Punk, was blocked by Blurred Lines, which was #1 for 12 weeks. Get Lucky spent five weeks at #2.
And now, Starboy, another Daft Punk song, is stuck at #2. Next week, Closer will have been #1 for 12 weeks while Starboy will most likely have its 5th at #2.
It's a conspiracy.

Cheap Thrills blocking Cold Water. Also, Shape of You preventing Bad and Boujee from getting more weeks at #1 pissed me off so bad.

OMG blocked Airplanes Closer - Heathens Blank Space - Take Me To Church No One - Apologize Janet Jackson - Again blocked All That She Wants (I don't hate "Again", but "All That She Wants" is one of the symbols of the 90s)

Love Yourself(ew.) blocking Stressed Out. Did Sorry do the same? Oh yeah, that was painful to watch. No, just one week at #2 for Stressed Out.
