Over half of your ranked it top 10, but some lower scores dragged it down a bit. (If Kanenrake hadn't participated, this would've been #5 :O ) “Everytime” was (allegedly) a response to Justin Timberlake's “Cry Me A River”, following Britney and JT's much publicized break-up in 2002. In “Cry Me A River”, Justin gives the cold shoulder in response to being betrayed. In “Everytime”, Britney admits just how dependent she was on the guy. She also apologizes and asks for forgiveness. It takes a lot of humility and swallowing of one's pride to do that. “Everytime” is Britney's most commercially successful ballad. It hit top 10 in most countries around the world. She sounds so emotionally fragile and the minimilistic music box piano adds this feeling of wanting to return to what her childhood fantasies of what romance were. {Still in the running}...Baby One More Time (You Drive Me) Crazy [Stop! The “Stop!” part is particularly effective. The production bangs around so forcefully, it really creates the stressful environment the song is going for. And Britney puts in a strong effort to fight against it. Her melodramatic songs are usually her best from the early Max Martin years. {Still in the running}...Baby One More Time Oops!... There was so much hype for a new Britney single that “Hold It Against Me” sold 411,000 copies in its first week. I'm still amazed it sold that much. It was her second Hot 100 #1 debut, becoming one of very few artists to accomplish that feat. The song is known for having terrible longevity, however. It didn't even make it to 20 weeks on the Hot 100, the minimum for recurrency. Same thing happened on pop. It rose and fell so damn fast it wound up being purged despite being a top 3 hit. “Hold It Against Me” is centered around a cliche pick-up line. It's a Max and Luke creation at the height of Luke's pop dominance. And it's the earliest US hit to contain a dubstep breakdown (correct me if I'm wrong on that). {Still in the running}...Baby One More Time Oops!... But will it make top 5?!?! “Circus” marks the first time Britney worked with Dr Luke, who produced a few other tracks on this album of the same name. The song is basically a sequel to “Piece Of Me”. Her life is a circus, but she's the ring leader. She's in control of her narrative, not a caged animal being forced to do humiliating tricks. The way Britney was able to put herself back ontop after being made in a running joke by the media everyday for so many years was amazing. And although she returned in 2007, and her music was on top form, her life was still a mess. The Circus era showed she wasn't done on pop just yet. This song has a very strong pre-chorus, but it's never been a top fave of mine. {Still in the running}...Baby One More Time Oops!... I Did It Again Stronger I'm A Slave 4 U Toxic Womanizer

This would've been #4 had he not participated~ “Stronger” was the third single from Oops and this one actually had a physical release! It even went #1 on the singles sales chart. However, airplay let her down this time. “Stronger” is another Max Martin production, and by 2001, the US was tired of this sound. And tired of “manufactured” “meaningless” teen pop in general. The Backstreet Boys struggled after “Shape Of My Heart” until they tried going HAC with “Incomplete” in 2005 (and then went back to flopsville after that). *NSYNC were able to survive by going the R&B route. But when a group has an obvious solo star in it, the group is destined to break-up sooner rather than later. Christina tried a variety of genres and jacked a P!nk song. Jessica Simpson became a reality TV star. The Spice Girls were already broken up. And Britney, well... the US paid her dust until “Toxic”. She was still fine internationally, however; the backlash was strictly a US thing. As for “Stronger”, Britney's melodramatic lyrics and melodies match so well with Max Martin's dramatic production tricks. She sounds stronger than yesterday. And I love the blaring sirens in this. The video, meanwhile, sees her battling a chair. {Still in the running}...Baby One More Time Oops!... I Did It Again I'm A Slave 4 U Toxic Womanizer

It's pretty much become obligatory for teen pop stars to release a sexual song to shed their innocent image and show that their work is maturing. Britney was probably not the first to do it, but it was a big deal when she did. “I'm A Slave 4 U” sees Britney stray from the Max Martin formula, and pure pop in general, and work with the Neptunes. The Neptunes were the go-to urban music producers in the early 2000's, which was the sound she needed to pull this type of song off. “Slave” floundered in the US charts. That CHR peak is an injustice. But that doesn't matter. This is definitely one of her most well-known songs. Of course I have to mention Britney's iconic 2001 MTV VMA performance of this where she carried a snake around her shoulders (which PETA weren't too happy about). {Still in the running}...Baby One More Time Oops!... At least in the US. That all changed when the Outsyders were recruited from complete obscurity to create Britney's next lead single. Literally. This is the only notable hit they've ever made. “Womanizer” was very in tune with the emerging dance-pop trend at the time. The growling siren thing sounded hot too. It gave Britney her first Hot 100 #1 since her debut single, and her first pop #1 in four years. Scratch that her first pop TOP TEN in four years. The song has a great “I won't stand for his shit” attitude, but it doesn't take itself too seriously, especially with that video. “Womanizer” is simply fun pop, which Britney is great at. {Still in the running}...Baby One More Time Oops!... Three iconic hits remain! There's a 46-point gap between #3 and #4 (in other words, since the max points one person can give a song is 42, it was impossible for one person to remove one of these songs from the top 3).

Has that stomping “DUN DUN” beat ever been put to better use? It's also one of Britney's signature hits. This song is so damn camp and overdramatic. I love it. Britney warns all men out there that she's a heartbreaker and not the innocent girl you think she is. She says “oops!” so sarcastically. She's not sorry. In fact she kinda enjoys it. She also taunts the idea of Hollywood romance in the spoken-word bridge (the bridge references the Titanic, a movie that was everywhere at the time). “Oops!” went #1 in almost every country in Europe/Australia/NZ. It slayed the hell out of CHR too, but had a low peak on the Hot 100 due to a lack of physical release (and because pure pop songs don't get played much on other formats). It was the lead single from her second studio album; the one that debuted with over 1.3 million copies. A record for a female artist until Adele shattered it in late 2015. She also performed this song at the 2000 MTV VMA's. BOMT VS TOXIC!!
