That Sting and Shaggy song must have hit with viewers. It’s already 35 on iTunes lol.

As soon as I saw SZA lose to the Weekend and then saw Ed Sheeran take both of those pop awards, I knew this ceremony was complete bulls**t. I love Bruno Mars to pieces (and this album and both songs that won) but come on. How do they manage to mess it up so badly every year? Oh well, at least an album and songs I like won. That certainly doesn't happen every year. The show itself was such a snooze too. I was more annoyed by that than her losing Best New Artsist TBH. I didn't mind Bruno winning AOY (If it wasn't going to be Kendrick, I didn't mind him) but I would have rathered he did not take Song AND Record. There were too many other strong contenders.

Not impressed with the Bruno Record-Album-Song sweeps in both the general and R&B categories. The era was fun and he is an excellent musician, but the songs did not warrant that level of acclaim in a year of such boldness and innovation in the urban field. The general field voting bloc is hopelessly out of touch. Ultimately it's just so lazy. When you have a lot of great music, I don't get the point of a sweep. Something like Adele circa 21 I at least get, because that album was so much bigger than anything else that year, as were the singles. But this past year, no one artist/album stood out, so why the need for a sweep? I blame the nominating panel, though, because they had to know throwing Bruno in everything could lead to a sweep. It's like, why be conscience enough to leave Ed out, but then let Bruno sweep? Also, I don't know what you mean by "general field voting bloc." There is no "bloc" because all voters vote for the winners of the general field categories. Yeah, where was he last night?

With Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran winning Album awards, the tracks from those albums are ineligible next year in all categories except Record of the Year. That's good news.
What I don't know is if that includes their duet remixes. Anyone know if the "Finesse" remix with Cardi B and the "Perfect" duets will be eligible in genre categories?

It's all so frustrating. I don't see how the Grammys can claim to award best in class when that's so clearly not what they do.

BTW. Just here cause Alessia won. So deserved and so well-spoken for someone of her age. Cannot wait for new music.

There's such a big cognitive dissonance between seeing most people say Bruno should not have swept (or even won any of the majors), while at the same time acknowledging that Bruno was inarguably one of the best three performances of the night, if not THE best by mere virtue of being the only one to perform something uptempo (honorable mention to DJ Khaled's Make-a-Wish moment with thick Rihanna - I'm still dead at that spot-on remark from Landmarx). He consistently stands out against the rest whenever he performs at an awards show. There is a reason why voters were so eager to award him and he showed it tonight. He absolutely earned his wins even if I would have personally given ROTY and SOTY to someone else. It's just not a good look right now to keep rewarding non-black men at the expense of unambiguous minorities and women, but the old guard keeps doing it. There's really very little he can do about that except maybe wield his influence on voters behind the scenes so that it can create a positive change in a year that he's not nominated. And that's assuming his influence is that deep. I have no way of knowing if it is. I'm also this close to placing a bet on Cardi B being the next rap artist to win a major anything. It's officially a Kendrick off-season and Drake is probably still anti-Grammy? Psh, bish better get that album out now!

Pretty sure they will be, similar to how Adele won with a live version of SFTTR the year after 21 won AOTY and Best Pop Vocal Album. It just can't be the recording present on the album that won.

Those quotes from Neil are just.... Go off, Lorde. You have every right, girl. How are you going to sit there and say that “women need to step up?” Have you not watched 2 seconds of the news?

This show was a mess. When I first saw the nominees 2 months ago I could already see that the Grammy committee has no clue.JayZ nominated for record of the year? what a joke.Bruno nominated for song and record of the year with 2 different songs.Should have just been 1 song.Kesha not getting nominated for Song of the year was ridiculous and her not winning Pop vocal performance or album is ridiculous. Then they have Elton John,Miley,U2 and Sting performing while Lorde is just sitting in the audience.Lorde should have got a performance slot.I love Bruno but he didn't deserve to win song or record of the year. The Grammy's are supposed to be about music quality not sales.

Has women winning historically been an issue? I dont remember it being one before... it feels like this is just an off year, albeit a poorly timed one.

The live broadcast’s metered-market household rating, 12.7/21, is down about 20 percent compared to last year’s awards. In the fast nationals, the Grammys drew 17.64 million viewers and a 5.4 rating in adults 18-49, pending updates. Last year the preliminary figures were 23 million and 7.3, which adjusted up to 26.07 million and 7.8.

Yes, and even funnier how he just released a remix to a song on the album after a failed single... and now watch them re-release Versace and then another song... and both will smash. A master class in bought-and-paid-for era recovery? or all the stars aligning? You decide. ;) What is bought and paid? That's just smart marketing. I think it does give that a impression the album wasn't a success because people really loved it, but actually because the label threw enough money in it.

And very little mention of Bruno being only the second Asian (or person of Asian descent) AOTY winner. It probably has a lot to do with Bruno Mars' racial ambiguity that this isn't mentioned. Anyway, the Grammys will never change. The voters will always go with the most AC or rock choice out of the nominees 98% of the time. The two times they gave a Hip Hop album the top trophy was when one was classified under R&B and the other one was led by a pop song. And there was a clear stacking the deck thing going on this year. You snub the white guy with the guitar (Ed Sheeran) because you don't want Twitter to implode when the inevitable sweep happens. Then you nominate the closest act to that (Bruno) who happened to make an R&Bish album and isn't white + throw in a rap outlier nominee (Jay-Z) to block the main rap frontrunner (Kendrick). Lorde didn't even have Pop Album support, but you still nominated her because you wanted to look like you are here for an acclaimed album, and then nominate another album that no one was going to vote for anyway (Childish Gambino). You still satisfied your own taste without rewarding the WGWG. The Grammys have an agenda every year. It's so transparent, and quite frankly, boring at this point.

A big piece to the puzzle of why last night’s show turned out to be what it was: Live Nation vs. AEG.
Live Nation instigates and holds these very highly-contested battles against AEG, so much so as they began that monopolization of artists having to tour exclusively with them if they wanted to play The Forum or MSG during their runs (with AEG turning around and doing the same thing against ‘em with Staples or The O2). The Recording Academy had to jump through HOOPS to get this show back in NYC for this year, and one of the only ways AEG would agree to the 60th being held away from LA was if the Academy would simultaneously sign a contract to come back to the Staples Center for another 4 years afterwards.
With that push to NY, ultimately, came the power for Live Nation to monopolize the broadcast. That included pushing Live Nation touring artists to the front, and wedging AEG artists to the back. These people include *gasp* Lorde, Ed, Katy, and Taylor (as well as Bieber). This could very well explain why there was no offer for Lorde or Ed to perform, and there could be more to why Taylor said no. Most of the performers/big nominees last night are Live Nation touring artists: Bruno, Kendrick, Pink, Jay-Z, Gaga, Dave Chappelle, U2, DJ Khaled, SZA, Sting, etc.
In other words, if everything felt contrived and forced last night, that’s because it very much was.

I don't even like Lorde, but I have to congratulate her for refusing to perform if she wasn't going to receive the same respect as her male co-nominees. I thought this s**t only happened at the country awards. I still remember Kacey Musgraves refusing to perform after she was only offered a minute and a half to sing, WTF. What the hell is wrong with the people in charge of these shows.

On a happier note, I need to give a shout-out to Rihanna. As these award shows continue to become less interesting, she consistently shows up, entertains, sounds great, looks great, and doesn't take herself too seriously. She's gradually evolved her sound while still staying true to her roots. She's been around for over a decade, but I'm not sick of her. I don't necessarily stan for her, but I'm always glad to see her.

I think he just knows his lane and isn't trying to make a fool of himself jumping out of it and into a social-commentary arena. Somewhat ironic b/c he'd probably do a far better job of it than a lot of the people who do make the attempt. But he wholeheartedly believes in his ability to move people so he puts a ton of focus on that. He can lowkey shit on JTWYA, Grenade, and It Will Rain all he wants but deep down he will always be that sappy bleeding heart who just wants to let love rule. I respect it even if it's about as effective today as the hippie movement was in 1970.

Not everyone has the same interests and talents. Imagine if we were all super serious politically and never "fun." There is a place for everyone. The issue with the Grammys isn't Bruno's fault, nor should he (or Beck or whomever) receive criticism for it.

I love Finesse so I'm fine with it showing up next year. I enjoy Perfect but I think getting SOTY back when it was called Thinking Out Loud was enough recognition.

I haven't read through this entire thread but I've read through some of the reaction to the awardees, both here on Pulse and many other places, and I just wanna blow off some steam... (Note I'm not saying anything regarding choices of performers, but instead choice of winners)
No matter what the Grammys do, there will always be backlash. Some people won't be satisfied. In my opinion, the Grammys should first and foremost be based upon the quality of a release with commercial success and any other factor which people feel makes an artist entitled to an award (think race, sex, personal struggles, death) taking a back seat. However, I look around and see opinions that:
1. Before the Grammys people were saying that Despacito, despite being globally the biggest hit of 2017, shouldn't win the Grammys its nominated for because it's catchy and extremly popular, but not a good song. 2. Now that the Grammys are over and Despacito ended up not winning anything, people are complaining that the Recording Academy "showed its true colours" against Latin Music by snubbing Despacito in favour of 24K Magic, That's What I Like and Feel It Still (all three of which I think most people in most serious music discussions would consider to be higher quality songs than Despacito).
3. Now that 24K Magic has won "music's highest honor" Album of the Year, people are blasting the Grammys for choosing popularity of quality. People are blasting the Grammys for once again snubbing a black artist's hip-hop release over an album of a different genre, and snubbing one of the most acclaimed pop albums in recent times.
Sorry for this incoherent rant, but my point is that if the winner is the high artistic quality option then the backlash will be huge (I've see the comments on the video of Portugal. The Man accepting Pop Duo/Group which they won over Despacito and Something Just Like This, the comments are toxic and very harsh on the Recording Academy for apparently choosing the "song that no one knows from an irrelevant artist" (which is crap, but anyway) over the song which "defined the whole year all over the world"). On the other hand, if they go for the popular option that a large cross-section of society seemed to love the backlash is also huge with people saying they don't care about quality and they're all about money and politics. THEY CANNOT WIN, EVERYTHING THAT THEY DO WILL END UP WITH PEOPLE BEING DISSATISFIED. BOTH sides are saying things like "The Grammys suck and are irrelevant" and "They better change for next year".
People bring up the issue of race in nominations in previous years. This year, black artists are the majority in the top categories. People now complain that female are under represented this year, despite having great representation in recent years. People are also breaking out the article which describes 90% of recent Grammy nominees being male, with that article completely disregarding the fact that it's talking about ALL Grammy nominees (producers, writers, visual artists, performing artists, recording studio personnel) and not just the singers/rappers and these careers are dominated by males and therefore naturally the proportion of males to female in overall Grammy nominations would be highly lopsided. No matter what they do, they're doing to receive backlash.
Disjointed rant done.
