I ranked it pretty high because I love "Daddy Lessons" buuuuut I'm totally okay with it going out early because it's still more of a Beyonce song.

I love Daddy Lessons, not just b/c it's a Bey song - it's a great country song, period, and I think DC's addition really makes that clear. The only thing keeping it from feeling like DC featuring Beyonce is that Natalie doesn't open the first verse. It's a perfect fit for the group and certainly a top 10 quality song, even though I admittedly debated whether a feature should rank so high.
With that said...gah, that CMA performance. It isn't that it wasn't great, but as the old saying goes, when in Rome do as the Romans do. What is the point of showing up to the CMAs to perform a country song if you're not going to give a country performance? It would be like if Jennifer Nettles recorded a really r&b sounding song, and BET saw Mary J. Blige cover it in concert so they asked Jennifer and MJB to perform it at the BET Awards. So then Jennifer shows up with a fiddler and a banjo and throws a hoedown on stage - the whole audience would be like 'wtf are you doing here' and nothing MJB did would make it feel any less out of place. Black Twitter would have such a field day with the reaction gifs lol.
You just have to understand the crowd you're trying to win over and offer them what they came for. BET's audience didn't come for a country hoedown and the CMA crowd didn't come for The Beyonce Experience. It's also tricky with the country audience because to a certain extent you have to be willing to accept that as a whole they actively do not want you to be the star of the performance even if it is your own song. They want you to take a bit of a backseat and will hate you if you end up outshining one of their own. Beyonce's presence and ego haven't been on the back of anything since she outgrew her baby car seat so she showed up and put on the most Beyonce show ever, in the most Beyonce-thinks-she's-at-the-Grammys dress ever, and it blew up in her face.
Thing is, replace Beyonce with say, Lady Gaga showing up and putting on of her more outrageous theatrical shows and it would have been the same problem. I can understand why the performance went over like a cannonball. But this ended up being something I was not able to say when the moment actually happened, because all the racists showed their asses and blamed it all on Beyonce's blackness instead of just on Beyonce as an individual not reading the temperature in the room. They pretty much made it impossible for anyone to legitimately criticize the performance without being accused of whitesplaining s**t.

This + a good chunk of the audience that doesn't like Beyonce and people from "outside the genre" also still think the Dixie Chicks themselves are flag-burning satanist witches because they said Dubya suxxx so there was that going against the performance too. Like, the DXC could've came on stage and performed it solo without a big pop star who "hates the police" (that was the main criticism with Bey's inclusion I saw getting tossed around on social media ) and they probably still would've made a lot of people upset, lol.

"Daddy Lessons" is surprisingly good. Could have seen this a little higher, but am okay with it's placement.

I just realized that by making "Daddy Lessons" a feature, Beyonce has songs with both DCs of the same era (turn of the millennium).

Beating "Daddy Lessons" by 1 point comes our next song!

Commenting on "Voice Inisde My Head" now: It's really pretty and I like it, but again, it just can't compete with their older work for me.
"Truth No 2" is great, but the instrumentation is a bit repetitive, which is probably why it didn't make my top 20.

22. Heartbreak TownPoints: 335 Average Rank: 21 SD: 7.3412 Album: FlyRelease Date: June 25, 2001 Writer(s): Darrell Scott Producer(s): Blake Chancey & Paul Worley Charts:
U.S. Country: #23 Bubbling Under Hot 100: #21 The seventh and lowest peaking single from their sophomore album, "Heartbreak Town" is written by the great songwriter Darrell Scott!
I've always loved that they released this to radio even if it was a little sleepy. Lyrically this is one of my favorite songs about trying to make it in Nashville, I just wish the song had a little more energy. Still love it though!

The "square people in a world that's round" lyric is a big standout on this song for me, but aside from that, this one just doesn't compare to most of their bigger hits.

A decent album track, not a lot else. No shock losses so far. My number 1 is normally out by now, so I am doing better than normal! Truth #2 is my biggest loss so far, but I sort of expected it since it's just an album cut. Definitely one of the better ones though.

I love this song and proudly had it in my top15! It's unfortunate that it didn't made top20, but at this point I love most of the songs left so it alright, I guess! LOL

One of my favourites of theirs. Not sure how this broke their streak and peaked so low during their prime.

This wasn't bad, but the trying to make it in the music industry story has been done much better and more interestingly (see: Baby Girl and Even If It Breaks Your Heart), but there are some good lyrics here

Yes, what I like the most about this is that it offers a less "romantic" view I guess... It makes it more real in a way for me.

I pretty much love all songs about "Hollywood" for some reason - though Heartbreak Town is technically about Nashville, the theme still fits. And I agree, this one stands out because it's one of the few that is about someone who doesn't quite make it; most other songs in this realm tend to focus on someone who does make it, only to find out that even success is not all it's cracked up to be.

You should check out Lissie's last album. Many of the songs are about that theme AND there's a song called Hollywood.
