I’m obsessed with Wasted Energy. It should have been lead.
Jill Scott is so smooth. I even love You Save Me too.

This album is so much more than the sum of its singles and preview tracks. It works great as a whole... Early favorites: 3 Hour Drive, Jill Scott, Wasted Energy and Authors of Forever.

Alicia Keys Reveals 'If I Ain't Got You' Almost Went to Christina Aguilera!“There’s a really funny, amazing story around this song. I think we were on the same label at the time. She reached out and was like, ‘Would you write something for me?’ And then it came through so many emails. What a voice! I know I could write something fire for her. So time passed and I hadn’t written the song yet. And [the label] was like, “Do you have anything for Christina?’ I remember I had just recently written ‘If I Ain’t Got You,’” she explained. “I told my A&R at the time, ‘Let’s play her ‘If I Ain’t Got You.’ He said, Are you f-ing crazy? We’re not giving her that song. Are you out your mind?’ [Laughs] I was like, ‘Why not? I’ll write a hundred more of those, it’s fine. I think she should hear it. I don’t really think it’s a big deal.’ But I thought, ‘Fine, I’ll go write another song.’ So I went off and wrote ‘Impossible.’ I went to cut it with her and I love how she sounded on it. It was such a cool vibe for us to be able to work together during those times. But I will never forget that I would have given away ‘If I Ain’t Got You.’ Isn’t that crazy? So that’s a good story. “I cut the vocals with her because I produced everything. So it’s really important to be in the same space to just get all the energy. That was great. She sounded so good and she’s very special too,” she continued. www.justjared.com/2020/09/18/alicia-keys-reveals-if-i-aint-got-you-almost-went-to-christina-aguilera/

Wait. So, I didn't know Underdog was actually an African song. I thought it was some Ed Sheeran coffeehouse ballad. Did they add more to the album version? I'm legit confused. Anyway, this album is a mood. I am on edibles, with an IPA and a candle. I feel that is the vibe for this. She had nothing to prove and this album proves to me that she really does this for the right reasons. Even if she loses fans or some people only want Diary Alicia, she is still going to do what she wants to do. I happen to like all these sides of Alicia. I am a rare Alicia fan in that I think her latter stuff (GOF, Here, and this album) is better or more what I want to hear than her initial albums, save the hits. The songs I like least on this album I will just say she either bored me, actually unintentionally annoyed me (Good Job, Perfect Way To Die) or I was like WTF (looking at you, Jill Scott - this is some weird ass fever dream, and yet, I don't hate it, oddly enough). The Truth Without Love shouldn't exist, but everything else I'm cool with.
Anyway, my ranking:
1. Gramercy Park (I was not expecting this from her...AT ALL.) 2. 3 Hour Drive. (this song is EASILY one of her best songs period) 3. Me x 7 (another classic for her. wow and the shroom reference. she still has hunger in her and I love it) 4. Show Me Love (the Fire We Make of this album. gorgeous. I saw these two on tour together years ago and it's nice to have this collab) 5. So Done (these two are good together and what a groove) 6. Authors of Forever 7. Time Machine 8. Love Looks Better 9. Underdog 10. Wasted Energy 11. You Save Me 12. Jill Scott 13. Good Job 14. Perfect Way To Die 15. Truth Without Love

The fact she's going to at least match her last album without a hit out right now (it's been so long since "Show Me Love" and "Underdog" already) is impressive, especially given how terrible sales of R&B albums have been lately.

I'm still impressed at The Element Of Freedom album sales, but thinking about it "Empire State Of Mind" might have helped drive sales (in addition to "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" and "Unthinkable" driving sales from her core audience).
Great first week projection for her new album.
She is such a force when it comes to album sales !

I'm still impressed at The Element Of Freedom album sales, but thinking about it "Empire State Of Mind" might have helped drive sales (in addition to "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart" and "Unthinkable" driving sales from her core audience). Album sales were still decent back then, and she was coming off three major hit albums so I think she would have had a strong opening regardless of "Empire State of Mind," but that definitely helped to keep her in the public eye.

Solid numbers, all things considered. I like this album the more and more I listen to it but I am really not into the last 2 songs. I get the intent behind them and I'm sure Alicia's heart was in the right place when she wrote them, but...yeah...not my thing.

Those two songs weren’t meant to be on the album. They were added on due to the times. Jill Scott is the perfect closer though. I have grown to love the last two tracks and let them play though. Personally, I think the album is perfect even with the last two tracks.

Am I really hearing a Janet sample saying GIMMIE A BEAT on Gramercy Park? I have thought Alicia has a small influence from Janet for years now since Girl on Fire with her Bluelight version of the song so I wouldn’t be surprised.

3 Hour Drive Authors of Forever Wasted Energy Gramercy Park You Save Me
Do not care for the melodramatic piano ballads (Good Job, Perfect Way To Die), or the weird Truth Without Love.
Stellar album nonetheless. If the singles are handled correctly, this album could sustain her through 2021.
3 Hour Drive for Urban/Rhythmic,Urban AC Authors of Forever for Pop/Hot AC
Knowing her, and the kind of songs that have gotten single treatment already, she's probably releasing ME x7 next.

I don’t like this album will be known for songs like Underdog, Good Job and Perfect Way to Die when she has many much better. I hope that could be corrected and we get a better song to be a hit.

Listened to the album three times to sink myself into it.
I definitely like it better than GOF, I did enjoy her last album, but this one is slightly better.
Truth Without Love is perfect as the opening number, look forward to a live arrangement. Can't wait to listen to the album again.
