1998 Billboard Airplay Year End Rankdown: Winner posted

In another trip down the time machine, we are now traveling back to the year before I was born, 1998! As most of you know, Billboard's rules at the time did not allow singles to chart on the Hot 100 without a physical release, which means that many major 1998 hits did not appear on Billboard's Year End Hot 100 list of 1998. Because of this, we will instead be ranking Billboard's Airplay Year End Chart of that same year, so that songs such as "Iris", "Torn", etc. can be included.

PM me your ranking of the songs on the list from most favorite to least favorite by July 1 at 11:59 P.M. Pacific time. If you have not yet downloaded the Preference Revealer, see Page 11 on the Rankdown Queue thread with instructions from YotamTS on how to do so.

No, but airplay from the Mainstream Top 40 chart was included in the list, along with airplay from Hot AC, Rhythmic, AC, and Modern Rock.

They did not. Airplay was measured completely differently pre-1992 than it is now.

No, the Hot 100 has always been a mixture of things. From its conception in the 1950s, it used single sales, airplay reported as playlists through DJs, and reported popularity from jukeboxes (lol). Up until 1992, airplay was counted by playlists being submitted in rather than actual tracking of what was played and audience impressions. In 1992, airplay began being tracked the way it is today.

The airplay chart has also had an interesting history. It began before the Hot 100 did as Most Played by Jockeys, tracked the same way as stated above. In the late 1950s, however, the chart was discontinued as Billboard focused solely on the Hot 100. In 1984, the airplay chart returned as Hot 100 Airplay with a 30 position chart. It expanded to 40 positions in 1986, and 75 positions in 1990.

The old airplay chart used to only track airplay from what were considered the most popular genres. In 1992, the tracking method changed to how it is monitored today. In 1998, the chart expanded to reach all radio formats.

Any airplay chart you see that is listed as Top 40 whatever is referring explicitly to top 40 formatted stations, or in layman's terms, pop stations. Top 40 Tracks started in 1998 to continue to track airplay for pop radio only when the Hot 100 Airplay chart expanded.

Today, the chart is referred to as Radio Songs instead of Hot 100 Airplay. The chart is also now only 50 positions instead of 75. It still encompases all radio formats, however. There are also several other format airplay charts now to single out each format's top played songs.

In Casey Kasem's case, he did use the Hot 100 as the American Top 40. I'm not sure when the switch to the airplay charts happened, but nowadays, the American Top 40 is actually a lagging version of Mediabase's CHR/Top 40 airplay chart with a few minor differences (only using airplay of the stations that air it rather than all pop stations).

Meh, I'm good with the songs I already have.

Less songs to rank would also hopefully encourage more people to play and decreases procrastination. I'll add songs if people really want me to though.

If a rankdown is based on an official list, I think it's a bad idea to exclude songs on that list just because they "don't belong". That kind of arbitrary decision-making lends itself to way too much subjectivity and too much arguing over what belongs and what doesn't, and we really don't need to open that can of worms.

If people think we should include other songs, I say expand it to 100. Of course, if we do that, we need to have an objective measure to determine which songs to add; otherwise, we'd end up with the same conundrum as above.

Stick to 75 because that's all Billboard announced. This isn't a Hot 100 Year End, this is the year end chart for Hot 100 Airplay, which at the time only has 75 songs on the chart on a weekly basis anyway, which is exactly why there's only 75 songs in this list.

The chart was called Hot 100 Airplay because it was the chart that tracked airplay for the Hot 100. The name of the chart did not mean that there were 100 positions.

Also, you'll find this list to be strikingly different from the Hot 100 year end from 1998 because a lot of these songs were not allowed to chart due to the old rules of the Hot 100.
