Not sure why I waited so long to listen to this, but damn this was worth the wait. Coming in, I adored the three released tracks (“High Horse” is one of the most fun songs that I’ve heard all year, while “Space Cowboy” just guts me every time ugh) so expectations were high. She delivered, just as she always does - she manages to blow me away more and and more with each album. I’m impressed with how she manages to find new ways to keep her sound fresh.
Early standouts include “Space Cowboy” (I can’t not praise this one), “Love Is A Wild Thing”, “Velvet Elvis”, “Happy & Sad”, “Rainbow”, “High Horse”, and “Oh, What A World”. That being said, this album has a lot of depth to it lyrically so I echo the sentiments that this one will likely be one to sink in more over time.
Just stunning.

As of today, GOLDEN HOUR has a 90 score on Metacritic (based on 11 reviews)... That's the SECOND BEST score of the year among 147 new albums released this year Hopefully, as more reviews come out this week, the score can stay this amazing!

If this doesn't get an AOTY nom the Grammys are canceled! I think it will. The Grammy’s show her love and recognition, and she has the right people thinking she’s talented.

Lonely Weekend has been snatching my soul all day! This album is definitely Album of the Year worthy for the Grammy Awards. In mere hours this has already become my favorite album from her.

I never knew I needed this musical Xanax new Kacey Musgraves album. Has ms so mellowed out and relaxed that I am almost falling asleep on my keyboard. I really appreciate her plainspoken, unassuming vocals too.

Hoped for slightly better but I guess it's in line with the decline in album sales in general.
Should be her 3rd top ten album anyway

Such a perfect album. It's a damn masterpiece, that's what it is. I've probably listened from top to bottom about 10 times now and I think I can now accurately rate the tracks, as The Brazilian Guy 🇧🇷 did! 01 "Slow Burn" 10/10 - I absolutely love this song opening the album, and the lyrics are so good. I like when the drums kick in in the second verse right after the line 'but in Beijing they're heading out to work'. The production and background vocals are just perfect too. 02 "Lonely Weekend" 10/10 - a total jam with such gorgeous lyrics and production. I don't know how it's even possible for artists and musicians to come up with stuff that's this good. 03 "Butterflies" 10/10 - this probably ties with "Dime Store Cowgirl" as my favorite single of hers (even though it doesn't seem likely to get an adds date), but I might even like it a little more than DSC. And even with a 10/10 score, this probably isn't my favorite song on Golden Hour. That's how good all of the songs are. Lots of these songs are getting 10/10 scores because I simply can't dock them even half a point, lol. 04 "Oh, What A World" 10/10 - this one took just a bit to grow on me, but my goodness what kind of perfection is this? I actually really like the vocoder part at the beginning, and then it's such a well-written and interesting song from there, but probably my favorite part is actually the plucky banjo line that comes right after the chorus. 05 "Mother" - like The Brazilian Guy 🇧🇷 I don't think I can exactly rank this one because it's not really a full song. I like the lyrics though, that's for sure. I did listen to this one the first 5 or 6 times I listened to the album, but I think it'll probably be the one "track" that I'll skip somewhat often. Nothing against the song, though. 06 "Love Is A Wild Thing" 9/10 - such gorgeous lyrics again, and I also like the banjo throughout. On any other album this would be a true standout, and while it's a great song, I don't find it to be quite as good as the first four tracks on the album. 07 "Space Cowboy" 8/10 - I do really like the lyrics here but the production and arrangement aren't quite as strong on this song as on most of the others. But still, it gets an 8 out of 10 lol, because it's still a really good song. 08 "Happy & Sad" 10/10 - Whoa. I can't even find the words to describe this one. That chorus is simply heavenly. And then that steel guitar at the end of the chorus is equally heavenly. This one is definitely a contender for my favorite song on the album. I'm not sure if I can pick just one song though, because there are 3-4 that are just that good. 09 "Velvet Elvis" 9/10 - So catchy and fun. This one just makes me smile. It's a really different sound for Kacey, but she pulls it off to perfection. 10 "Wonder Woman" 9.5/10 - I'd probably give this a 10/10 if Wonder Woman were a Marvel character instead of DC Kidding, of course! But this is a really cool song and I just love how it looks at a relationship and basically says the woman can be just as strong (or stronger) than the man, whether physically, emotionally, etc. 11 "High Horse" 10/10 - Ok, this is the song that I can't get out of my head. I did not know a song could be this good. I honestly think this song has the potential to turn Kacey into a household name. I don't anticipate a lot of support from country radio or any other formats, at least initially, but I know Kacey has some music videos coming, and I fully expect the Grammys to come through for her. Hopefully that'll be enough to spark more interest in the album, including this especially awesome bop, and then maybe it can get some airplay? I don't know. But this is just too good to go unheard of by the general public. 12 "Golden Hour" 8/10 - Really solid, and honestly I think the only reason I didn't rank it higher is because it comes right after "High Horse". I guess another reason would be that the production on this song doesn't stand out to me quite as much as it does on most of the other songs. But again, 8/10 is still really good. 13 "Rainbow" 7.5/10 - I hate that this is my least favorite song on the album, but I think it's just because there's less going on in this song. It's mostly just a piano-driven ballad...and I have absolutely no problem with those kinds of songs (the piano is one of my favorite instruments), but with this album, every single song has such an interesting arrangement, and so this song doesn't seem to quite fit as well. And, like the title track, I also think it's hurt just a bit by coming after "High Horse". She probably should have just put "High Horse" as the last song on the album lol. Such a perfect album though. Overall I'd give it a 10/10, and I can honestly say that it might be one of my top 2-3 favorite albums of all time. This is not an album I expected from Kacey, but now that it's in my life, I just can't imagine life without it lol.

I guess 2018 decided to put its best foot forward. The first album I've bought this year and I doubt it'll be topped, even if I expect to love Troye's new album, too.
I've been dealing with family issues, so I only just got a chance to listen to the album a couple of hours ago. "Masterpiece" is the right word for this. It's overwhelming in the best way. Going to take me a while to digest it all, especially since I'm addicted to "High Horse" at the moment and it might eclipse the rest for a little while, although "Wonder Woman" and "Love Is a Wild Thing" stood out the most of the non-promotional tracks.
I'd love for this to get an Album of the Year nom. She and it definitely deserve to be nominated. I'm not sure if she has enough clout to manage it though. :/

PITCHFORK gave Golden Hour an 8.7 score! Not gonna lie... their closing paragraph quoting "Silver Lining" was killer! pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/kacey-musgraves-golden-hour/"Less concerned with outside forces than internal balance, Golden Hour stands as an assured, artful snapshot of a particular rush of feelings, but its wisdom speaks volumes to Musgraves’ ongoing evolution. “If you’re ever gonna find a silver lining,” she sang in the first track on her major label debut, “It’s gotta be a cloudy day.” Even then, she suspected that ecstasy is most rewarding when it’s hard-won. On Golden Hour, she wears the sunlight well."

An addendum to my 2018 mission statement is to now make High Horse one of the biggest crossover hits since "Need You Now" and "Cruise". The country music purists are calling it trash, but those people can absolutely rot because this song is going to be one of the biggest jams of 2018. The one thing I don't need is a pop mix. Oh and attention people I'm going to need links to any and all line dances created for this song. I went to Boot Barn this weekend and I got my fit ready for Cowboys Dance Hall.

OK, this hippie chick has my full, undivided attention now. When I started listening to the files I got from Amazon that were to tide me over until the physical CD arrived today, I had some shroom and I was in an Uber on my way to meet someone, so I wasn't that focused. I maintain that High Horse and Space Cowboy are the highlights (and Rainbow now, too) but now that I am listening to it on my home speakers and focused*:
1. High Horse 2. Rainbow 3. Space Cowboy 4. Butterflies 5. Mother 6. Wonder Woman 7. Velvet Elvis 8. Slow Burn 9. Happy & Sad 10. Lonely Weekend 11. Love Is A Wild Thing 12. Oh, What A World 13. Golden Hour
* I was drifting in and out during Happy & Sad and came to at some point during during Velvet Elvis and completely rejuvenated for Wonder Woman.
The mixers really pushed her voice to the forefront of the mix. In points, her voice reminds me of Sheryl Crow's. Plainspoken but effective. Apparently, she worked on some of this album at Sheryl's studio, which doesn't surprise me. But yeah, I get Fleetwood Mac in their prime and Sheryl Crow from this. I completely love #1-8 and it's a great listen. I just wish there were more High Horses or even complete devastators like Space Cowboy and Rainbow (my new anthem). B+

I don't know if any of you saw her Instagram stories a couple of months back where she got this karaoke mic/app and she created stories for days on end with just her singing karaoke obsessively (not an exaggeration). It was hilarious and absolutely adorable. This is probably going to be sacrilege, but I have yet to have a moment with High Horse. Maybe I just need to be in the mood and in the right mindset for that song to hit me in the face with its awesomeness.

SCREAM at that video. Thank you for sharing!
This is only less than seven minutes, but can you imagine how many hours she spent singing all those songs?? I would bet good money she was high for most of these stories. 😅
