10. "I Get Lonely"from The Velvet Rope (1997) "I want no one but you."
I was sad to see only one song from The Velvet Rope make the top ten, and even more sad that the one that did only made #10. Ignoring whether or not the songs above it are deserving, #10 overall is still a pretty good showing in a catalogue as good as Janet's. The song is one of my personal favorites, and the video is fantastic too. The song also has a remix featuring Blackstreet that got its own video (well, the original video with scenes of Blackstreet added), but the mix has never been released digitally nor has the remix video ever been released commercially or made available for streaming. Average: 20.37 Standard Deviation: 15.302

9. "The Pleasure Principle"from Control (1986) "I'm not here to feed your insecurities // I wanted you to love me."
I find it kind of funny that the one Control single that missed the top 10 on the Hot 100 is the only one to make top 10 here. I'm also pleasantly surprised. While "The Pleasure Principle" was not one of my favorites when I was younger, I use it a lot more than most of the other Control singles nowadays. My personal favorite is the Shep Pettibone remix from the video, which gives the song an extra umph, even though the original is already great. (Also, why was that mix never used on any of her compilations?) Average: 19.593 Standard Deviation: 16.044

TPP is probably my favorite Janet song. The video is ICONIC and is responsible for so many careers.

8. "Someone To Call My Lover"from All For You (2001) "Sometimes it's not a good thing // but I'm blind."
It's weird to think that this was Janet's last big pop hit, but it was. In 2001, Janet was still one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, and this was the second (or third) big hit from All For You. The So So Def remix for this track featuring Jermaine Dupri is supposedly what caused the two to meet and eventually starting a long term relationship. This track did surprisingly well in the rankdown considering the competition, and despite many calling for it to leave, there is a pretty big gap between this track's average and #9's, and it also has one of the lowest standard deviations as well. Remix recommendations: Velvet Mix (laidback R&B mix) + Hex Hector/Mac Quayle Club Mix (fun dance mix) Average: 17.852 Standard Deviation: 11.668

While I have no idea why it made it this far, STCML is definitely a bop. The way she lilts on "ba-ay-beeeee" at the end of each pre-chorus will always be my most favorite part of the song...sublime. I was mainly shocked by it b/c it felt so underrated during its run - even if it was a big hit for her I never really knew anyone to be as into it as I was. So I didn't think anyone checked for it like that and expected my #30 to be at the high end for it, not the low one.
Re: VR's almost complete absence from the top 10, it's one of those albums where the whole makes a bigger punch than the sum of its parts if that makes any sense. No, it doesn't have the immediately digestible pop-candy classics that her other albums did, but that isn't to say it's not easily digestible. It's just not an album that is really made for picking out bits and pieces to appreciate. You have to drink it all in at once.

7. "Escapade"from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) "Let's save our troubles for another day."
The third single from Rhythm Nation 1814, "Escapade" is one of Janet's most care-free tunes, and it's one that I always bust out when I'm ready for the weekend. It became her third #1 on the Hot 100, staying at the pole position for three weeks. Another place this song was #1 was frenchfry and weaver 's rankdown lists, while Wave. is not a big fan. Don't be too mad at him, though, the rest of the votes were so strong that it barely affected the average. Average: 17.815 Standard Deviation: 16.312

Would love to think my 49 is God's 38 and that we collectively sunk that song (at this point I'm just being spiteful lololol) but I'm gonna guess it's something in my top 3 and that I'll be ready to slice someone over it.
Actually I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that even if the next song isn't it, my #49 won't be #1. I think there's one other song that probably didn't have such a wayward rank like that to pull it down.

6. "Rhythm Nation"from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) "Join voices in protest // to social injustice."
What has to be one of her most iconic (if not most iconic) songs, "Rhythm Nation" is notable not just for being a huge hit, but for bringing awareness of racism and prejudice into pop music. When talking about the inspiration in making the song and album during an interview with David Ritz for her Design of a Decade album, Janet said "I re-listened to those artists who moved me most when I was younger - Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye. These were people who woke me up to the responsibility of music. They were beautiful singers and writers who felt for others. They understood suffering." I know I was in the lower half of the voters, but I really expected this to make the top 5. But I guess that's part of the fun of rankdowns, you never really know what to expect. Holy f**kballs! I did not expect "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" to do so well!!!!!! Its appeal explains how the song hit #1 as the 7th single from a blockbuster album
