58. "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" (Blackstreet & Janet feat. Eve & Ja Rule) from Finally (1999) "Boyfriend, on the phone // call me all day on the telephone."
This star-studded track was released as the second single from Blackstreet's third album, Finally. The song is mostly a duet between Teddy Riley and Janet, although the other Blackstreet members, Ja Rule, and Eve are also present. The song's music video was ridiculously expensive, which is humorous given how dated it looks in 2017 (though there were several Janet videos that cost even more - with "Scream" still holding the record for most expensive music video ever produced). Rumors date back to 1998 that this song was supposed to feature the Spice Girls (in place of Janet), with MTV reporting that Teddy Riley was working on a song called "Girlfriend, Boyfriend" with the Spice Girls, meant for a South Park soundtrack. Personally, this has grown on me since I did my rankings and I wouldn't rank it quite so low now. Average: 52.11 Standard Deviation: 16.43

I am gutted that this one did so poorly when it was released. It got so much local airplay that I thought it was a big hit. I checked the Billboard charts from time to time and was surprised by its poor performance.

Girlfriend/Boyfriend was such a disappointing mess! And not even a hot mess or a cold mess, but a lukewarm mess with no seasoning. Teddy Riley and Janet in a studio should have equaled magic but something about the production felt phoned in and piecemeal. This is definitely one of those collabs where you get the feeling that none of these acts were in the studio with any of the others when recording their parts.
It's a shame that most of Janet's collaborations ended up being so blah - and even if one didn't think they were a mess, there are enough stories about her not really enjoying the collab or being difficult to work with in some way, or the other person being a douche that it didn't make the effort worth it.

57. "With U" from 20 Y.O. (2006) "Never have I ever been around someone // who makes life so free and life so fun."
"With U" was the third and final single from 20 Y.O. and was released exclusively to urban radio. The song only peaked at #65 on the US R&B chart, however, it managed to make it to #11 on the UK R&B chart. Wiki suggests that this song was written as a sequel of sorts to "Let's Wait Awhile", but I have a hard time believing there is any truth to that. Then again, Janet kept talking about this album being a throwback to Control. I have to agree with Rolling Stone when they say, "If we were her, we wouldn't make the comparison." I loved "With U"." There was this remix by Chad Jack that made me enjoy it. I still listen to it from time to time.

56. "Can't B Good" from Discipline (2008) "Thinking 'bout last night // replaying in my mind // when you touch me there // ooh, it feels so right."
Somehow, Discipline managed a fourth single. Despite the lackluster commercial performance of the album and its second and third singles, or the promotion for the album stopping almost immediately after it was released, and Janet successfully asking out of her contract. All of this, and we still got a fourth single. "Can't B Good" was released exclusively to urban radio in March of 2008. It managed to make top 20 on the Adult R&B chart. The song was reportedly inspired by her relationship with then-boyfriend Jermaine Dupri. On what might be her most generic album post- Control, this track stands out, especially among the bland-as-hell ballads. Average: 49.593 Standard Deviation: 12.026

- I only enjoyed "Feel It Boy" in Summer of '02 because I was hungry and thirsty for more Janet. Not sad to see it go
- Surprised "Luv Me, Luv Me" and "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" are out this soon
- F**K YES!!!!!!! The bland "Call On Me" with its atonal twinkle sound is right where it belongs!!!!!!! Sad that a beautiful, expensive video is wasted on such a snoozefest
- :o Did not expect "With U" and "Can't B Good" out so soon, especially given the love some have of 20 Y.O. on this board, but I'm not sad. Her Control-Damita Jo material is much stronger than what came after (Unbreakable excepted of course)

54. "Whoops Now"/"What'll I Do" (TIE) from janet. (1993) "I got a feeling that // I'm gonna have some // fun in the sun // with my friends." "What'll I do for satisfaction // if you take away // away your heart?"
How odd is it that these two songs that were released together as a double a-side single ended up in a tie? "Whoops Now" and "What'll I Do" were both lifted from the janet. album, and while the averages are the same here, "What'll I Do" was a little more polarizing with a higher standard deviation. Both songs are very different from the rest of their parent LP, with "Whoops Now" being an almost bubblegum-ish pop song, and "What'll I Do" sounding straight out of the 1960s. The reason for this is that "What'll I Do" is actually a cover (with some lyrical alterations) of a 1967 Johnny Daye song, and musically, the arrangement is very faithful to the original. Personally, I've always loved "Whoops Now", as light and fluffy as it is, but "What'll I Do" has always been my least favorite from the album. I can appreciate it more now, but it's not anywhere close to a personal favorite of mine. God recommends the Dave Navarro remix. Average: 47.444

janet was a wonderful experience the first time I listened to it. I love how eclectic the album is, and these two songs are great examples of that. And I could only rank them right in the middle! Yeah, the competition was stacked here.

Agreed. janet. was a magical experience. "What Ill Do" is a hidden gem in her catalog. Don't get me started on the two most underrated gems; "Funky Big Band" and "New Agenda" with Chuck D are my go-to songs on the album besides the singles.

janet. hasn't aged well at all for me but at the time it was released, I loved it. I remember my step-dad buying the special edition (I think it was two-discs?) that had the full-length album cover.

I've heard all the Control singles hundreds of times...except for this one. Funnily enough, I was familiar with Tinashe's "How Many Times" before I became familiar with this.

I forgot how cute "Whoops Now" was until I was listening for this rankdown. Fair enough spot for it and "What'll I Do". This is going to get juicy going into the top 50!

49. "The Best Things In Life Are Free" (Luther Vandross & Janet Jackson with Bell Biv DeVoe & Ralph Tresvant) from Mo' Money: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1992) "I'll lose my sanity // tryin' to measure your intentions." This duet was originally released as a single from the Mo' Money soundtrack. It was later released in 1995 to promote Design of a Decade: 1986/1996 (except in the US, where the song was left off of that album). The original soundtrack version is an upbeat R&B song, however, a house mix done by CJ Mackintosh was used as a single version in the UK. The 1995 re-issue of the song used a new house mix done by K-Klass, despite the CJ mix being the version included on Design. The original version was brought back for inclusion on Number Ones/ The Best. This is one of the collaborations that I didn't know about until I bought Number Ones. As you can tell by my score, I was less than impressed. The CJ mix amps things up a bit, but it doesn't hide the fact that two legendary artists couldn't come up with anything better than this. TIE:
49. "The Great Forever" from Unbreakable (2015) "I don't see why loving someone or what I do // seem so radical to you."
Originally planed to be the final single from the album, "The Great Forever" never got a proper release following the postponement of the Unbreakable tour. Janet also used the song in a video denouncing the rumors that she had cancer (remember that?). The songs lyrics talk about judgmental and negative people and not letting them affect you. It would have been interesting to see how this song would have done as a full on single and if we would have gotten a video. The random sneeze in the middle of the song is one of the more jarring moments. The scores were fairly divisive on this one, with several top 20 rankings, and several in the 70s.
