41. "Come On Get Up"from All For You (2001) "What I wanna see // Is you shake that ass for me, so..."
![](https://img.discogs.com/qnbXdYsL-bywqAEE85DJap_APZ4=/fit-in/568x500/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-1776313-1300291054.jpeg.jpg) Just missing our top 40 is the final (promo) single from All For You. The clue for this song was kind of an obscure one. I posted the Milk & Sugar remix of Mya's "Free", and Milk & Sugar also did like five or six promo only remixes of this song. It was originally planned to get a full release, however it ended up only being a Japan-only promo single, with most All For You promotion ending with "Son of a Gun" and the tour. The song is a light and fun house jam, with lyrics similar to the album's title track (Janet trying to pick up a man). A music video was also supposedly in the cards, but never happened. 40. "R&B Junkie"from Damita Jo (2004) "I feel like bumpin' to some old school // I feel like dancin' all night with you."
![](https://img.discogs.com/X3IQgR83Ljmj4Frc_iSyr3S96VY=/fit-in/600x600/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-1961703-1460493016-6286.jpeg.jpg) Like "Come On Get Up", "R&B Junkie" was reduced to a promo single as the final release from Damita Jo. The song heavily samples the 1981 hit, "I'm In Love" by Evelyn King. The song only managed to reach the Bubbling Under R&B chart in the US, but did reach top 40 on the UK R&B chart. Rumors about a music video being included on the From Janet to Damita Jo DVD happened before its release in 2004, but a music video was never filmed. Average: 39.963 Standard Deviation: 14.983

R&B Junkie is amazing
I really wish I didn't rush this rankdown Their is like 10+ changes I want to make, mainly cause I accidentally tanked one song that will earn me probably death threats That and then select songs I really want to rearrange, mainly I underranked the All For You era singles and if I redid my list I'd put them in the top 10
I really should stop doing rankdowns last minute

Anyone who voted the next song in the 60's is officially on my shitlist. I love the Mike Rizzo and Tony Moran remixes of "R&B Junkie." I didn't know about these! Will have to check them out. 39. "Rock With U"from Discipline (2008) "Strobe lights make everything sexier."
![](https://lastfm-img2.akamaized.net/i/u/770x0/78894a2fdf5a4393b00ae319813bb156.jpg#78894a2fdf5a4393b00ae319813bb156) The second single from Discipline, Janet claimed that she made this song specifically for "the kids" (i.e. the gays). While most of Discipline is R&B that sounds very of its time, "Rock With U" is a house jam. The one-take music video matches the sexy club vibe of the song and showcases some amazing dancing. I love the Mike Rizzo and Tony Moran remixes of "R&B Junkie." I didn't know about these! Will have to check them out. I think there were more remixes of that song but only the Tony one leaked out initially and then Mike Rizzo's was briefly available on LegitMix.

Feedback is above and beyond the rest of Discipline imo, though it's still a good album

@antigonerising we broke our similarity streak with "Come On, Get Up" :'(
That's the only one I'm sad about placement so far. I had hoped it would at least make Top 40 and it was sooooo close. Still though, this rankdown as a whole is less painful for me than some (*cough*PleaseStay - KylieRankdown*cough*). It's a testament to the highs of Janet's discography being universally loved.

Even though this last bunch has had songs ranked within 10 positions of my ranks, I still wish that R&B Junkie, Come On Get Up and Rock With U had reached top 40

38. "Dammn Baby"from Unbreakable (2015) "A brand new movement // that started with a conversation in a café."
![](https://lastfm-img2.akamaized.net/i/u/770x0/c14fd52cb19b7346b307a8ca49ee5006.jpg#c14fd52cb19b7346b307a8ca49ee5006) It's also disappointing when an artist known for their visuals does a whole album compagne without many? For awhile it seemed like "No Sleeep" was going to be the only music video we got for the Unbreakable era, but miraculously, Janet came through with "Dammn Baby", the third full single release from the album. The song is a jam and a half, and notably interpolates "I Get Lonely" during the breakdown. This song seems to be pretty well liked among fans, however, it couldn't compete with the classics, and thus, only made 38 on the countdown! Average: 39.444 Standard Deviation: 15.376

We're off more than normal with a couple of these rankdowns lately bat1990. I'm sure we'll get into formation once top 20 hits, though!

37. "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)"(with Carly Simon) (Remix feat. Missy Elliott)
from All For You (2001) "I'd rather keep the trash and throw you out // Stupid bitch in my beach house."
![](https://i.imgur.com/JuTydEv.png) The final single from All For You came about when Janet, Jimmy, & Terry had the idea to sample Carly Simon's "You're So Vain". When Janet went to get Carly's approval, Carly not only approved the sample, she wanted to add her own touch to the song. According to Janet, the spoken verses were Carly's idea. The song was not as successful as the previous singles from the album, and unfortunately no more singles were released. The song showcases a very pissed off Janet, something that I'm not sure we've really seen since. This was a childhood favorite of mine, and while it hasn't aged as well as some of her others, I still think it's an underrated gem in her catalogue. Remix Recommendation: Route 80 RemixAverage: 38.481 Standard Deviation: 15.052

If you gave the next song a low score (and three are in the 70s), there's only one person to blame...

36. "You"from The Velvet Rope (1997) "Trying to please everyone // sacrifice your own needs."
![](https://lastfm-img2.akamaized.net/i/u/770x0/93611c86c4194b0acb6360295afa205e.jpg#93611c86c4194b0acb6360295afa205e) The fifth single from The Velvet Rope, "You" received minimal promotion, had a live music video, and it was only released commercially in Japan. In a way, this song feels weird to rank among her singles because comparatively, it doesn't really feel like one. Still, this is one of my personal favorites from The Velvet Rope, and the biting lyrics are some of Janet's best. Believed at the time to be about her brother Michael, Janet claimed this song was actually about herself (I liken this song to Kylie's "Did It Again", lyrically). Whoever it was originally intended for, I think anyone who's ever had to take accountability for their own actions when they've wanted to blame others can relate to this song. Fun fact that you may already know: In the bridge, Janet is spelling "conscience" backwards. Average: 38.259 Standard Deviation: 18.373

35. "I Want You"from Damita Jo (2004) "Is that any way to be? // Just have your way with me."
![](https://lastfm-img2.akamaized.net/i/u/770x0/9da23b9a5927457686764809e1351ad3.jpg#9da23b9a5927457686764809e1351ad3) "I Want You" was the second single from Damita Jo. While the album's first single, "Just A Little While", catered to pop radio, this song was promoted to urban. The song has a classic Motown feel to it, and the video features a laidback Janet, walking around, getting groceries, and riding the bus. Like all the singles from Damita Jo, the Superbowl incident prevented this song from doing as much as it could, at least in the US. While it reached 57 on the Hot 100 and 18 on the R&B chart, it was able to reach top 20 on the overall singles chart in the UK, and top 3 on R&B, comparatively. In some countries, the song was a double a-side with "All Nite (Don't Stop)'. Average: 36.407 Standard Deviation: 16.595

34. "Make Me"from Number Ones (2009) "We're gonna have a good time. // Me and you gon' get it tonight."
![](https://lastfm-img2.akamaized.net/i/u/770x0/f374196861d54461a8942dd5e40e27de.jpg#f374196861d54461a8942dd5e40e27de) "Make Me" was the first single and only new track from Janet's career spanning compilation Number Ones (aka The Best). The song was produced by Rodney Jerkins and is a throwback track reminiscent of both Janet and Michael's early hits, even including a "don't stop 'til you get enough" chant. The song failed to make an impact outside of the dance chart (where it became her 19th #1), however it was well received by critics and proved to be worthy of inclusion on an album full of her biggest hits. Average: 36.222 Standard Deviation: 18.627

33. "Twenty Foreplay"from Design of a Decade: 1986/1996 (1995) "Seeing your face glow // is the nicest of hellos."
![](https://i.imgur.com/4OJXi9C.png) The second of two new tracks from Janet's first greatest hits, Design of a Decade: 1986/1996, "Twenty Foreplay" was also released as a single in 1996. The song is a classic Janet slow jam. The single version makes the song a bit more radio friendly, however the album version, running at six minutes, is the most fun. The video shows Janet paying homage to Dorothy Dandridge, and if anyone can pull it off, it's her. Unfortunately, this song seems to be among the most forgotten in Janet's discography. Remix recommendation: Junior's Jungle Mix. Average: 35.222 Standard Deviation: 19.441

36. "You"from The Velvet Rope (1997) "Trying to please everyone // sacrifice your own needs."

File this under forgettable although it has a nice background story

Soon we'll lose another person's number one, and the most polarizing song in the entire rankdown.
