32. "Throb"from janet. (1993) "Boom, boom, boom // until noon, noon, noon."
This song was, unsurprisingly, very polarizing. So polarizing, in fact, that it had the highest standard deviation in this entire rankdown (the only one to go over 20). "Throb" is an over-the-top house anthem with few lyrics, but plenty of moans and ad-libs. It's definitely not a song for everybody, but it is a total jam and the David Morales remix takes it even further. The song was released as a double a-side with "Any Time, Any Place" (with the former getting much more intention on non-dance formats), except in The Netherlands of all places, where "Throb" was released on its own. I remember being so shocked that she did this on the Unbreakable World Tour. I really wasn't expecting it, and it was a nice surprise. Remix recommendation: David Morales Legnedary Club MixAverage: 35.111 Standard Deviation: 20.091

Loooooooooooove Throb. It sort of surprises me that it got single treatment though - it always felt like the kind of song that was clearly intended to be a cult fan fave, not pushed for mass appeal. Then again, she did have ATAP accompanying it. Maybe this was the label's way of compromising with what Janet wanted, or experimenting with single choice without putting all their eggs in one risky basket.

31. "Let's Wait Awhile"from Control (1986) "I promise, I'll be worth the wait."
I lose another top ten of mine with this one, and I was really surprised when I saw that this wouldn't crack the top 30. "Let's Wait Awhile" was the fifth single from Control, and is one of the first Janet slowjams. The song tackles the subject of abstaining from sex, in which the protagonist in the song is not quite ready to go there with her significant other. "Someday is Tonight" on Rhythm Nation 1814 was viewed as something of a sequel to this song, in which the lovers are finally ready to go through with it. Personally, I think it's one of Janet's prettiest ballads. Jimmy Jam has said of the song, "The theme ... was Janet's idea. She's not a preachy person. She's not telling people how to live their lives. All she's doing is offering an opinion." Average: 33.666 Standard Deviation: 16.399

30. "All Nite (Don't Stop)"from Damita Jo (2004) "Pop it like you're popping a cork."
Released as the third single from Damita Jo, "All Nite" is a dancefloor ready jam that had potential to be a smash under different circumstances. In reality, it was only successful on dance charts in the US, but it did pretty well in the UK. The video centers around a city-wide blackout and Janet serving #looks. Remix recommendation: Sander Kleinenberg's Everybody Club MixAverage: 33.519 Standard Deviation: 14.841

29. "Black Cat"from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) "Don't understand why you insist // on ways of living such a dangerous life."
This song was one of the more polarizing in the countdown, with quite a few top 20 votes, but also some in the 70s. "Black Cat" was written solely by Janet, and was produced by Jellybean Johnson. The song has a harder rock feel than most of Janet's other material, and was written with an anti-drug message in mind, if the "ain't no acid in this house" interlude right before the track didn't give it away. It was the sixth consecutive top five single from Rhythm Nation 1814. Average: 32 Standard Deviation: 18.86

28. "No Sleeep"from Unbreakable (2015) "So you better get ready, my king // 'cause I'ma be the queen of insomnia."
"No Sleeep" was Janet's first single in five years, so the expectations were high. Doing what she did with janet. and The Velvet Rope, Janet decided to lead off Unbreakable with a vibey R&B mid-tempo rather than something with more kick. The album and video version was longer than the initial single mix, with an additional rap by J. Cole. The slow-burning jam was a favorite of some, but others ranked this really low, with @mirza going so far as to rank it as his least favorite Janet single, ever. Average: 30.074 Standard Deviation: 17.402

I remember on the Janet board there was a poster named Because of Love whose suspension started a two-week-long discourse about what Janet would say about white people using the n-word freely.
Anyway, the song has overstayed its welcome here.

"Let's Wait Awhile" and "Black Cat" are the only big surprises. I'm sad "All Nite (Don't Stop)" didn't go further but I'm not terribly surprised.

33. "Twenty Foreplay"from Design of a Decade: 1986/1996 (1995) "Seeing your face glow // is the nicest of hellos."
The second of two new tracks from Janet's first greatest hits, Design of a Decade: 1986/1996, "Twenty Foreplay" was also released as a single in 1996. The song is a classic Janet slow jam. The single version makes the song a bit more radio friendly, however the album version, running at six minutes, is the most fun. The video shows Janet paying homage to Dorothy Dandridge, and if anyone can pull it off, it's her. Unfortunately, this song seems to be among the most forgotten in Janet's discography. Remix recommendation: Junior's Jungle Mix. Average: 35.222 Standard Deviation: 19.441 No... This song is everything!
I thought it was my # 2
Hmmm...I know what is my #1 but if this is 3...

27. "You Want This"from janet. (1993) "Girls may have been easy // boy, you have to please me."
In most territories, "You Want This" was the final single from janet. The song samples Diana Ross & the Supremes' "Love Child" and Kool & the Gang's "Jungle Boogie", and its lyrics are about a man who is a little too confident that he'll be able to have Janet easily. The music video was filmed in the desert, and features a rap by MC Lyte, that was not included on the album. Inexplicably, this song was left off of Number Ones, therefore it has never appeared on a Janet compilation album. Average: 29.704 Standard Deviation: 15.903

Glad that my remaining bottom third songs finally appeared: You, I want you and Twenty foreplay :) I've never been a big fan of LWA... prefer other ballads from her so this wasn't in my top 40... Sad to see Make Me go :'( my favorite song of hers over the past 15 years... love the throwback but modern sound. Should've been a smash! Surprised at Black Cat!! To be honest I've appreciated it more lately, but I think the RD got me in a special mood to rank it as high as I did. Another day I would've probably ranked 10 points lower... I'm still waiting for a couple of songs to appear. Hope they don't make the top 20

I remember on the Janet board there was a poster named Because of Love whose suspension started a two-week-long discourse about what Janet would say about white people using the n-word freely. Anyway, the song has overstayed its welcome here. God has spoken, and... 26. "Because of Love"from janet. (1993) "There's only you on my mind // and I never want to leave your side."
Released as the fourth single from janet., this song was not as successful as the previous three singles. A music video was made (using tour/behind the scenes footage), but it remained a Japanese exclusive until 2001's All For You (DVD Edition), which featured most of Janet's videos under Virgin Records. The mood of the janet. album was all over the place, and "Because of Love" showcases janet. at its happiest and poppiest. I actually went years without knowing that this was a single. It's a cute song, but it doesn't stand up to huge hits from the album. Average: 27.444 Standard Deviation: 15.768

25. "Scream"(Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson)
from HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (1995) "You're selling our souls // but I care about mine."
After spending much of her career trying to separate herself from the "Jackson" name, in 1995, Janet finally sang with her brother for the first time since her own breakthrough. The song was based off of the media's constant attention and focus on the famous siblings (particularly Michael, given the accusations being made at the time). The song's music video is one of the most expensive of all time and remains iconic and influential, inspiring many futuristic music videos in the late '90s and early 2000's - most notably "No Scrubs" by TLC. Here we lose four top five votes, including one #1. Average: 27.296 Standard Deviation: 14.578

I love the David Morales mixes of "Scream" even though the chill vibe of them is a stark contrast to the harsh, attitude-filled original.

24. "Control"from Control (1986) "I don't wanna rule the world // I just wanna rule my life."
The first track on Janet's breakthrough album let the listener know right out of the gate what they were in for. This was Janet, taking control of her life and her music. I can't imagine what it must have been like to hear this as an album opener for the first time (hearing it for the first time on Design of a Decade without the dramatic intro was slightly less effective). The song was released as the fourth single from the album, becoming the fourth consecutive top five hit from the album. I was a bit surprised that this song wasn't top 20, but when you think about all the great songs that are left, it is very stiff competition. Average: 26.852 Standard Deviation: 15.394
