It's Waterfalls - because it ranked at #100 in 1996. Am I right please tell me I'm right Nope. Waterfalls was predominantly a 1995 hit. - #4 -No Doubt - Just A GirlCHR/Pop Yearend Rank | #69 Hot 100 Yearend Rank | #68- No Doubt had several peaks on the chart over the years. Their breakthrough album Tragic Kingdom gave them 4 Top 40 hits, with just one Top 10 (and #1) Donβt Speak. Their next album gave them just one hit, Simple Kind Of Life, which only hit #30. It looked like they were done. Then Rocksteady came out and in 2002, Hey Baby reached #1, followed by a #3 hit Hella Good and then a third #1, Underneath It All. Then theyβd hit the Top 10 for the last time the next year with Itβs My Life. Their chart career spans 16 years, with Settle Down being their most recent hit in 2012, reaching #18. | Points: 2261 | | Average: 23.0 | | Median: 20 | | St.Dev: 18.11 (7th lowest) | - Just A Girl has the 7th lowest Standard Deviation. - As I tabulated the lists, this song stood on the line of the Top 10, sometimes stepping out, sometimes stepping in, but it was pretty consistently in positions 10 to 8 up until the last 5 lists came in when it moved up to end up at #4. - Only three people have a song left in the Top 3 from their bottom half, Doc Indie Party Rock, .indulgecountry and weaver. Both The Brazilian Guy π§π· and Willow Rinadoobee Breakfast have the Top 3 in their Top 10. I liked "Spiderwebs" a lot more. I'm rooting for "Don't Speak" or "Waterfalls".

The top 3 are coming - together!
Here's some deets.
- #3 has the second highest median, second only to #1.
- #3 also received 13 Top 10 placements (along with Fantasy), second only to #1, which got 14.
- #2 has the third lowest standard deviation. The second lowest was Let Me Be The One down at #94. The lowest is #1.
- All three songs received #1 placements. One of them received 1, one received 2 and one received 4. They don't appear in that order (or the reverse).
- One of the songs received no ranks below the Top 50.

"Settle Down" reached #18 on Pop? That surprises me, because I never heard it, and it only peaked at #19 on Alt

1979 is the dark horse of this, and I think it could possibly be #1, which I believe may make some rock posters happy.

How likely is it that "1979" has the lowest standard deviation?
Can someone PLEASE tell me that they tanked "Don't Speak"?

Anything but DS winning would be a huge upset and as much as I love the song (I think it's my highest-ranked one left?) I'd totally be okay with the surprise that would bring. I have the benefit of liking/loving all three songs left, though.

I hope "Waterfalls" wins but honestly I'd be okay with any of these 3 songs winning as I like them all! "Waterfalls" is easily my #1 song of this year, that was never a question for me and I'm glad it is Top 3 at least.

DS FTW, and Waterfalls for the upset. At this point 1979 has long overstayed. :sip2:

I'm left with my #1, #11, and #30.
Let's just say that I'm strongly hoping for a surprise win.

I'm rooting for 1979, even though it might not be my highest song left, because that means that the Rock contingent will have reigned victorious over the Popsters. We, the underdog, can plant our flag and prove to all the Popsters that our song was so good that it captivated you and made you place it high enough to win.

Wouldn't Don't Speak, which is under a SKA band be considered rock though? I checked, and Don't Speak is normally considered either ska or alternative rock.

First of all, Don't Speak isn't ska (it is rock, albeit pretty poppy rock)

Tbh, I think rock was the winning genre in this particular rankdown. Of course 1996 was kind of rock heavy compared to a lot of years but if you had asked me before starting this rankdown if 1979 or Stupid Girl or any of the Oasis or non-DS No Doubt songs would have placed as high as they did, I wouldn't have believed you.

"Don't Speak" was the slow ballad of the album and today is far more recognized as a Pop song than an Alt song. It was #1 for like 17 weeks or something on Pop but it only reached #2 on Alt. It's not like it was a crossover that took months to get to Pop, by this point they had the dual-format appeal on instant impact. "1979", on the other hand, reached #1 on Alt and crossed over to peak at #9 on Pop. It feels like much more of an Alt song than a Pop one.

{ONE} - #1 -No Doubt - Donβt SpeakCHR/Pop Yearend Rank | #88 (and #3 in 1997) Hot 100 Yearend Rank | none- Where Spiderwebs put No Doubt on the map, Donβt Speak made them mainstream and a household name. It rocketed up the chart, hitting #1 in week 7, and it stuck around there for 11 weeks. At the time, the two-week holiday break didnβt count toward the official chart total so nothing was said about it breaking a longevity record but counting that two-week break, those 11 weeks put it in second-place for the longest running #1 in CHR/Pop history. They still hold the second-place record but are tied with Torn by Natalie Imbruglia and We Belong Together by Mariah Carey. | Points: 2526 | | Average: 13.9 | | Median: 11 | | St.Dev: 12.20 (Lowest!) | - Donβt Speak was a pretty obvious #1 and is probably the least surprising rank on the entire countdown. While it did get to #1 early on, it still wasnβt until the 12th list that it secured its place there and didnβt move for the rest of the tabulating. Early on as I was adding the list, list after list, 7, 8, 9, 10, I actually wondered whether it would even be #1 and I was prepared to be surprised as Waterfalls was consistently coming out on top, with 1979 stepping in once. - Donβt Speak had the most Top 10 placements with 14. - It also had the most #1 ranks with 4. - It had the lowest standard deviation in the entire rankdown. - It also had the highest median with #11 and (obviously) highest average with 13.9. - It had a nearly 200-point lead over #2, the largest gap between any two songs in the rankdown. - It had the smallest range of rank placements with only 43 positions separating the highest from the lowest and subsequently, it has the highest Lowest Rank with (whoever)βs rank of #44. Glad to see "1979" make the top 3. Not my all time favorite of theirs but it's a great song nonetheless
