Mariah Careyβs Daydream era added to her total of #1s and Top 10 hits. Celine Dion released Falling Into You. Waiting To Exhale continued to dominate the soundtrack front. No Doubt gradually crept their way to the top. Metallica kept hard rock at the forefront. The Beatles release the second never-before-released single Real Love early in the year and later put out their third Anthology album.

- The Unabomber is captured.
- The last man to be hanged in the US is executed.
- Bill Clinton wins the United States presidential election.
- In sports: The New York Yankees win the World Series. Dallas Cowboys are the Superbowl champs. The Chicago Bulls win the NBA Championship. The Colorado Avalanche win the Stanley Cup.
