At least this whole mess happened in the middle of the summer, with a week that wasn't supposed to be very important. Nothing was predicted to make the top 10, nothing was predicted to debut high, nothing was predicted to become #1. It's easy to get upset but it would be much much worse if this happened during fall

I can see they skipped the Billboard weekly issues for the first week of January and last week of December 1977, which they also did in 1983. I think the last issue of December was a double issue that covers two weeks and included the year-end charts.
Another time Billboard did something unexplainable (sorry if I'm going a bit off topic) was when the sales tracking week weekdates were changed to their current Friday-Thursday schedule in 2015 from Tuesday-Monday. They counted the data for the previous tracking week, plus tacked on the 3 days difference towards the new week. Meek Mill's album then was the main beneficiary, since it was not only #1 in the Billboard 200 for two weeks, but also won Top Rap Album in the Billboard Music Awards, when clearly Drake's and Kendrick Lamar's albums had gotten better chart runs over the period considered for the awards. Basically because the Tuesday-Monday tracking week ended up being counted twice.

Billboard did not publish an issue for the last week of the year from 1976-1991. This was obviously due to the holidays. For those years, Billboard considered the charts listed in the last published issue as "frozen" and all chart positions remained the same for the unpublished week. That's not the case here. I'm sure they will get everything straightened out for this week rather than just skip this week entirely. By the way, there is no print issue for them to worry about this week, so that helps.

As someone who watches Mark Grondin (aka Spectrum Pulse)'s Billboard Breakdown every week, I find it pretty funny that Billboard is pretty much breaking down right now. I also watch mark and the last couple of episodes he has been late, usually when I wake up Wednesday morning it is uploaded, now it takes later in the day, Almost like he knew this shit was gonna happen again when she came back.

On the plus side, the ridiculous lag in 'chart date' v 'survey date' will be a lot closer Aug 3/4 v. July 31 for August 12 chart date.
Regarding streaming free or behind the wall, I'm not sure why Billboard would add more streaming data when the chart is far to heavily weighted on that front. I'm back to argument that, say, I bought Imagine Dragon's Thunder and I play it 100 times during next month - it's only counted once. Yet, I have Imagine Dragon's "Believer' downloaded through Spotify - I'll play it 50 times during next month. Each one of those plays counts for all four chart weeks - that's just not right. And yes I recognize streaming is no different than radio on that 'longevity' front, so it's a matter of weighing.

Often those frozen weeks didn't make a huge difference, since radio and sales were stagnant over the holidays anyway, but there are a few times I think it was obvious the charts would have been different. At the end of 1990, I'm almost positive Madonna's "Justify My Love" would have kept Stevie B's "Because I Love You" from getting that fourth week at number one. Whitney Houston's "So Emotional" would possibly have gotten two weeks on top and reduced George Michael's "Faith" to three weeks. Rick James' "Mary Jane" might have snagged a single week in the top 40 instead of peaking at #41. Had Billboard started this policy one year earlier, the Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night" would never have hit number one at all! Fortunately, I don't think anyone was robbed of a number one hit altogether between 1976 and 1991.

In Despacito related news, by the end of the week it seems like it'll hit 3 Billion on YouTube and be the most viewed video on YouTube, so expect another, probably, minor increase in streams and sales. Most of which would contribute to it's (Probable) 14th week.

Do we have any further points predictions this week? Probably not since we didn't get the official Billboard article.

When Despacito got the most streamed song of all time, it got a massive sales boost so who knows.

What if Billboard is going out of business?!?' We'd be sunk!!! Yeah, imagine what that would be like. As the charts are basically a summary of what is popular or basically what "other people like" People like us would be forced to listen to, buy & consume music for personal enjoyment rather than be in constant worry about whether other people like the same music we do.

I just meant we'd have nothing to talk about or refer to for chart stats. I don't think my listening would change too too much. I don't really use Billboard to discover new music as much - though it does help.

Most of which would contribute to it's (Probable) 14th week. I think that if that happens, it may help kill the song. It will surely lose points that week, and as it will have a sales boost, it'll mean that less people will buy it in the future. And many people from the clique are predicting that the lead single will be released this Friday, so...

I can't see them skipping this week, but they are taking way too long with this. Just exclude all the data from the shady party (a.k.a. all TIDAL data) and keep them off the charts until they sort out their mess.

What's the issue? I haven't read any of the articles or anything. Is it that Tidal are withholding or manipulating their info or is it that Meek Mill has enough points from streaming to be number one despite being available only on Tidal and nowhere else (including radio and sales)?

I don't really use Billboard to discover new music as much - though it does help. Like Radio & Records and Cashbox, Billboard can go and they'll always be an industry chart tabulator. Look at some of the innovative things HDD has done with the streaming revenue chart, etc. Billboard has been exceptionally erratic during the past decade and, while I used to believe they were pretty definitive and objective, the exceptions (and exclusions), the weighing, arbitrary rules that are applied when it suits them (or who's paying them), etc. have pretty much eliminated any legitimacy - I only follow the individual components since those are based on real numbers.

Yeah, I mean, I feel like Billboard are still the best source for determining popularity and that sort of thing but we always have to remember, the formula they use to tabulate the charts is always up for discussion as to how accurate it is. The reason why BB are 'the source' for charts is because of their history and because they don't really have a competitor who measures charts at such a wide scale the way they do. Another company could come along and measure the numbers very differently and have very different results. Would that make them more accurate? That really comes down to personal interpretation. That's why I don't use Billboard or any single source to determine things such as 'what is a hit' or 'one-hit-wonder' situations. No measurement or tabulation process is perfect for everyone. And maybe measuring popularity across a diverse country like America isn't even possible to do well?

I guess the Tidal data didn't significantly affect the top 10 such that the results were the same and they could use the video they prepared Monday, meaning they forgot to change the title to reflect the delay.
