The final song to miss out on our Top 2 takes my #1 down as well as one other, and a whole bunch of Top 3 ranks, too. It does also have the distinction of clearing out our final #14 holdout of the game, courtesy of bboat11 . This one kept a pretty firm grip on the #3 slot during the submission process, but it never came close to securing a higher finish as our ultimate Top 2 ran away with this pretty decisively. "I Need a River" is one of the most rootsy and classically country-in-sound track on the album. Laden with a lot of fiddle and dobro that gives it an earthy charm, it matches the lyrical content of summer escapism and Sara's rousing and cheery vocal performance. From the moment I first listened to the opening instrumentation of this song, I knew it was going to be a highlight and it became my #1 favorite on Words almost instantly. I love everything about how this one is written, produced, and sung, and I'm glad it could make it as far as it did in this game! Lol, looks like I'm in trouble!

What a perfect top 2!!! "Marquee Sign" and "Long Way Down" are definitely deserving of this lofty achievement I think "Long Way Down" still has this in the bag, but considering "Cry" just beat "Breathe" in the Faith Hill rankdown, underdogs are having some success lately... I would love to see "Marquee Sign" take the victory here!

I would love to see "Marquee Sign" take the victory here! I think "Marquee Sign" has a decent shot too because I believe there are people in this rankdown that decided to listen to the album and participate in this rankdown because they liked "Marquee Sign". I wouldn't really be surprised if "Marquee Sign" beat out "Long Way Down". That being said, I agree with you about "Long Way Down" winning being more likely.

Flawless top 2! Rooting for a "Long Way Down" win, though.

Our Top 2, ladies & gentlemen: These two ran away with the votes from the start and never looked back. Our eventual winner ended up with 76 points, and the runner-up settled with 93 points. "I Need a River" finished with 137 points, so you can see the sizable gap between these two and the rest of the competition. It was even closer at some moments during the submission process, and the #1 placement even changed hands once or twice, but in the end the winner still had a comfortable victory. Which song will win?!?

I hope "Long Way Down" wins and from talk in the thread, I think it will, but honestly either way I'm thrilled!! Worse case scenario, my #2 wins and it's a song I adore, so. Yeah!

Dead Flowers was the lead single. "White Liar" could still be a hint to Marquee Sign though since they both are about a bad relationship

It was only 17 points that separated our Top 2 from one another and the race was close, but "Long Way Down" comes out on top of the Words rankdown! It has the impressive distinction of having the most #1 placements of any song in the running with seven total, and it had all but two participants who ranked it in their top half, and most put it in their Top 3. "Marquee Sign" didn't do too shabby either with three #1 ranks and a lot of Top 5 showings, and only three people who failed to stick it in their top half of their list. "Long Way Down" is the most unabashedly neo-traditional country jam on the Words record and serves as a great, rousing album-opener. Smothered with fiddle and performed with ample twang and wails, this is where Sara Evans truly shines. Instrumentally it is a clear standout on the record in particular, and the sassy lyrics and vocal performance add another layer of fun to totally sell the song. Apparently most of us felt that following it with "Marquee Sign" was the perfect 1-2 punch as they were the two clear favorites. This one is a more modern and slick effort with a darker tinge to it thanks to aggressive production that sounds like it battles with an anguished but angelic vocal from Sara Evans, particularly during the big chorus. The layering and echo of the background vocals during the verses and pre-chorus push the envelope further and the addition of her daughter's runs at the end of the recording cap it off very nicely. Incredible Top 2! "So far down, that it ain't got a bottom Thought you had wings, but I guess you ain't got 'em Falling angel, don't look now Oooh oooh oooh, it's a long way down"
"If you had just been tequila I woulda known when to stop Woulda been easy to leave ya Never even woulda taken a shot"

Oh and just so y'all know the hint was that "White Liar," "I Hope You Dance," and "Born to Fly" all have extended musical outros... but the plot-twist is that it applied to both of our Top 2 since she did that with "Long Way Down" and "Marquee Sign," so I just did it to fuck with y'all stall a bit without giving it away. :kii:

Too bad none of us are smart enough to figure out your trickyness Anyway, fantastic top 2! I would have been happy with however this played out, but I had been calling for "Long Way Down" to win from the start, so it's kinda nice to be right! Both of these songs are amazing, but Sara just does the neo-trad stuff SO well, so it is no surprise to see that LWD was the collective favorite here.
