I am definitely surprised to see the Beatles song make the top 10! Not for a lack of quality though. I just always have an idea in my head that remixes and acoustic versions are going to get absolutely slaughtered in rankdowns. I'm glad it made the top 10 though, because it is definitely an amazing song!

THE TOP FIVE I Heard It Through the Grapevine In the End All Apologies Black Hole Sun Space Dementia
#5 is the second of four songs to have been in every single top ten throughout the ranking process. In fact, it never even left the top five. For a while, this song looked like it might actually be the biggest threat to the runaway #1, but it tempered off a bit and wound up finishing handily below the top four. Still, a remarkable performance for this song. We see three bottom tens go out here (clearing two of the three posters' bottom tens), while ten top tens go by the wayside with this reveal, including two #3s, one #2...and yet another #1. I want to say more...but I think that I'll wait until the actual reveal.

Probably Muse out next but was hoping that might be the sleeper winner.

I am elated that this next song performed as well as it did. I thought that it might have a chance at top ten, but to be top 5 throughout the ranking process? You guys...you're all part of my team. Also, congrats, BackwoodsBarbie and beno...(finally) you have cleared out your bottom ten with this latest reveal. Also, you're not invited to the Muse rankdown. (Just kidding, you can take part. Everyone's allowed! )

"Space Dementia" has a really cool instrumentation and production. The fact that it borrows heavily from one of Rachmaninoff's concertos is incredibly cool, and definitely earned it brownie points with me. I am not familiar enough with the classical baroque composers to know much about the stylings of Rachmaninoff, but I definitely hear baroque stylings in all the piano throughout the song, which sounds absolutely epic. I know that they are incredibly talented musicians because of the way they integrate those different styles together so effectively and seamlessly. So this is a well-deserved top 5 placement in my book!

Honestly, after the way some songs under-performed compared to expectations, #4 definitely exceeded expectations. It wasn't top ten after every ranking, but it was in the top ten starting with the fourth ranking submitted...and it never looked back. It especially picked up steam with the last group of rankings, eventually moving into the top five and staying there, even overtaking "Space Dementia" with the very last ranking. This song has just one bottom ten, but it will clear out that person's bottom ten (and that person has some explaining to do). Meanwhile, this song loses eight top tens, including a #3 and a #2, and it was ranked in the top twenty by all but five people.

I am usually not a super huge fan of oldies (which might contribute to my lack of love for The Beach Boys), but "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is a whale of a tune! That melody is amazing, and Marvin's vocal performance is soulful as fuck. The super outdated production also fits this song like a glove, making it sound timeless rather than simply old. This gets an A+ in my book!

Alright, time to get to the big boys. #3 is not only the first song to cross the 600 point threshold, not only is it the third of the four songs to be in every top ten, but it's also one of only two songs to not receive a single bottom ten ranking. This was also the last song to be #1 before the runaway #1 took back the top spot and never relinquished it. While there may not be any bottom ten losers here, there sure are a lot of top ten losers: TWELVE people lose a top ten here, but only one in the top three. This was also #2 as recently as the second-to-last ranking, so...yeah, you can blame Zac for this, if you want.

So I come back from doing a few other things (as well as preparing stats) to..."Good Vibrations" at #8? Really?
Anyways, I have my #4 and my #22 left. Not surprised in the slightest by this top two, but I was hoping to see some more deserving songs make the top two instead of my #22.

So it all comes down to this: "In the End" vs. "Black Hole Sun". One will claim the title of the winner of the first Journey Through Time, while the other...well...I'm sure it will be okay. Some quick stats about both songs:
- Combined, these two songs have just four #1s. Of those four #1s, three of those #1s were for the same song. - On the other hand, their top ten totals are staggering: A combined TWENTY-SIX top tens, to be exact. - One of the songs received just five bottom twenty rankings. The other received just four. - The last two bottom tens will be revealed with these two songs...but for what songs? - The final difference between the top two songs: 59 points. To be fair, the gap was even bigger before the last couple of rankings. - One of the two songs has one of the lowest standard deviations in the entire rankdown. - One person (lyhom) ranked one of these songs as their #3...and one as their #39.

Yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said this wasn't even close. This was #1 for almost the entire process. It reclaimed #1 from "All Apologies" with the sixth ranking submitted, and it never once looked back. I'm kind of amazed that this song just steamrolled the competition, but I'm not complaining. There are few songs I would have rather seen at #1 than "Black Hole Sun", and, with its dominant performance, no song deserved it more.

And that ends the rankdown! To be honest, I'm kind of surprised with how swimmingly this rankdown seemed to go, other than a few hiccups right before the reveal that made me hate everything. This was quite fun for me other than those hiccups, as well, and I can't wait to do more rankdowns over the coming months.
I want to thank each and every one of you who either submitted a ranking or followed along for the ride. You guys are why I wanted to do the best job I could possibly do for my debut rankdown, and I hope that this rankdown was as entertaining for you all to follow as it was for me to put together and reveal. And remember, as we discussed earlier with the "Space Dementia" reveal...you're all part of my team now.
And speaking of Muse...yeah, no surprise, we're doing that rankdown next. When will that rankdown start? I'm not sure about that just yet. But, for now, I'll see you guys around on the Games forum...or on other forums on Pulse, I guess. :kii:

Grats to Black Hole Sun! It's a deserving winner and though I was hoping for a couple songs to pull an upset (coughREDSKYcough) I'm fine with that winning since it's a good song.
