Things are getting interesting. No they're not. Despacito still has the upper hand.

Worst possible outcome in my opinion is if Despacito gets to 16 weeks and no further. Nothing more unclear than 2 songs sharing (waring?) the title of "Number One Songs of All Time".
It will then take months, years or possibly decades to get a tie breaker.
I hated that 15 month period when the #1 song was either Whitney's IWALY or Boyz II Men's IMLTY.

The longest stay at #1 does not necessarily make it the #1 song of all time
And regarding how long it will take to get another challenger for this 16 week thing, my guess is 6-12 months maybe sooner

Things are getting interesting. No they're not. Despacito still has the upper hand. This is most likely the last week in which it'll lead in sales and airplay. And maybe the #WildThoughtsChallenge will help it be dethroned on streaming, too?

^^^ Gary, I understand that.
But perception is often reality, and to the masses who don't know of or pay attention to Billboard's recent "Hot 100 song of All time" chart (Twist #1), the media attention that swirls around "weeks at #1" tends to produce a 'biggest song of all time' perception'. The coverage will be spectacular.
Do you think having waited 20 years for a 16 weeker, we may only wait a few more months for another due to Streaming and dipping sales? I don't sense an airplay slow down like in the mid 90s.

I realize this is *completely* subjective, but I view the two Boyz II Men songs on the 14+ list (IMLTY & OSD) to be the least memorable of the bunch, so personally I'd be pretty happy if Despacito knocked them all off. It also feels like a pretty good snapshot in time of 2017 -- Bieber is huge, and Spanish language hits have gone from novelty (Macarena) to something more likely to break through.
I do think Wild Thoughts is unlikely to be the one to dethrone. I think this will end up on the list of big #2 hits that got blocked by massive #1s. Reminds me a bit of when it seemed like Mariah would replace herself at #1 with Shake It Off and then out of the blue came Gold Digger, while Shake It Off remained #2.

The frequency of the 10 week plus songs has only increased the last several years,
1958-1992: 2 1990's: 11 2000-2004: 6 2005-2009: 6 2010-2014: 3 2015-2017: 7
In the modern era prior to the streaming takeover, we always seemed to average about 1 song per year or a little higher. Since streaming took off, that number has jumped to 2 or 3 a year (The 7 songs from Uptown Funk on account for 84 weeks out of the 137 that have elapsed since week 1 of Uptown funk)
Only a matter of time before the next challenger. Eventually something will hit 17. If this one doesn't the next challenger is just around the corner

Rihanna and DJ Khaled are offering prize money to fans who create the best 60 second "Wild Thoughts" videos. (Too bad no one told them that Instagram views don't count).

How will these fan made videos help Wild Thought's streaming numbers? (asking innocently)

How will these fan made videos help Wild Thought's streaming numbers? (asking innocently) If they're at least .30 seconds in length and play the song (uploaded on YouTube) it will count toward streaming. Can't remember if it has to be listed under the music category or not.

A few songs now just seem to have more longetivity at the top than ever. Not a big deal anymore that SOY could get 32 weeks at top 10. Despacito might be first song to spend 52+ weeks too.

^Actually, Uptown Funk! already beat the 52 week recurrent rule. Whoever is next would be second.

^ Uptown Funk got 56 and if the 52 week rule were active at the time Radioactive would have got 71.
So I have a bold prediction. Wild thoughts will hit number 1 for 1 week but won't immediately replace Despacito. This has happened with the last two huge number 1's, first Starboy looked like it would get stuck at number 2 behind Closer, then another song hit number 1, then Starboy shot up to number 1 randomly. Then That's What I Like looked like it would get stuck at number 2 behind Shape Of You, then another song hit number 1, then it popped up to 1 for a week as well. So that's what I think is gonna happen here. Not sure what the Despacito killer will be, maybe Friends by Bieber will debut at number 1 for a week then fall and be replaced by Wild Thoughts or maybe it will be Taylor Swift, who knows.

I'm definitely not wanting Despacito to break the record. Tie it would be fine. I'm thinking a 20 week #1 is right around the corner tho.

Wonder if the new version of Bodak Yellow will give a boost to be ahead of Despacito next week - I definitely prefer that over wild Thoughts

You sure Pink is gonna only jump to #30? It has extremely good sales and pretty decent airplay that compensate for it's weak streaming, I see going a lot higher. Maybe even Top 10 honestly.

Which IMO is the most bullshit thing ever, but whatever.

The Wild Thoughts challenge contest on YouTube. That's kind brilliant if it actually works
The music video boosted Versace on the Floor, too bad its Spotify streaming still sucks and stalling in airplay.
