The reality is "OSD" was #1 in both sales and airplay for most of its weeks at #1. On top of that, the album it was from returned to #1 during that time and had sold millions (i.e. it was 'splitting' sales in a sense). "OSD" was huge, so let's not needlessly knock it.

Well, Unforgettable is the best song of the group, imo.



SOY is almost guaranteed to tie the top 10 record this week, because Bank Account lost momentum. It's stable, not gaining like crazy like Bodak Yellow is gaining. Next week: SOY will be pretty weak for a #10 (the average #10 has 25-26k points, SOY's going to get 22-23k), so maybe "Bank", Strip That Down or JB's new song jump to the top 10.

I believe the only airplay-only song capable of dethroning OSD at the time was 2Pac's "California Love".
If you look at the Hot 100 Airplay chart for those last few weeks of OSD's reign, everything was either commercially released or too weak to mount a challenge.
California was such a strong contender that it eventually DID help propel it's A-Side to #1 status … 6 months later.

That Mariah era was truly the stuff of legend. She was at the peak of her powers with multiple #1 debuts/25 million selling album. I heard OSD could have had 20 weeks at #1 had the label continued to sell the single.

Taylor Swift has reliably put out a new album around every two years since her self-titled 2006 debut. It has now been two years and nearly ten months since October 2014's 1989, so Swifties are understandably anxious.

That might explain why they took notice on Friday morning (Aug. 18) when Swift deleted her Twitter avatar pic and header, then doing the same thing on her Facebook page as well and her Tumblr, where all her posts were deleted.

Her Instagram feed -- which has more than 100 million followers -- has also been wiped clean, and her official website is a blank (okay, black) slate as well. It's worth noting that three years ago today Swift released "Shake it Off" and announced her fifth album.

Fans, as you might imagine, are freaking out. A spokesperson for the singer, however, could not be reached for comment at press time.

HEAR HEAR!! Agreed that it was truly remarkable at the time in the mid-90s what this song did. And I recall it being EVERYWHERE (for pre-internet days) and a lot of people who weren't Mariah fans loving this song. That was part of what helped it get the record: It had wide appeal. But like someone else said, records are made to be broken. That's what was said when Mariah herself was breaking records.

Records are also a bit arbitrary. It became easier in the 90s for songs to be at #1 for a longer time, and now with streaming we are seeing songs stay at #1 even longer. It really isn't fair to compare the runs at #1 anyway.

I find One Sweet Day to be an average song....but Despacito to be the incredibly terrible one. I've only listened to the song once and never had any desire to ever hear it again.

I find One Sweet Day to be an average song....but Despacito to be the incredibly terrible one. I've only listened to the song once and never had any desire to ever hear it again.

I just think Despacito has a lot of grove, it's not that good. But it has a beat and you can dance to it, plus it's pretty memorable. One Sweet Day is so generic and average that most people forget it even exists, by far one of Carey's lesser songs in her catalog. I was baffled when I figured out it was the longest-running #1 of all time.

Ok I don't wanna drag this too far off topic what if One Sweet Day isn't in the top teir of Mariah Carey songs, what is? Certainly not any of her 2000s singles because the only one of them that stands out at all is Obsessed which in hindsight was completely embarrassing. And really so many of her songs pre-1994 were basically the same song, slow ballads designed to just showcase her singing capabilities which were impressive admittedly but the songs were never interesting. My favorite song by hers is Fantasy because it's the most upbeat and interesting song she's done but by the standards of Mariah songs that go for soaring choruses and vocal gymnastics (ALMOST ALL OF THEM) I actually think OSD is one of the best because it builds to a better climax than pretty much all the rest and also it features Boys 2 Men which means that you don't even get tired of listening to her belting for 4 minutes straight. So I'd call it a pretty solid song and while it maybe wouldn't be my pick for an outrageous 16 weeks at number 1, I can't complain at all either.

MC ballads that I think are way better than OSD include Vision Of Love, My All, Without You, Hero, Love Takes Time, Forever, So Blessed, Music Box, I Still Believe and Melt Away for starters. And that's just from the 90's.

But anyway, it is all down to personal taste. One Sweet Day was much bigger than I expected, but it did have both MC and Boyz II Men at the tail end of their chart prime and it was a very safe choice at the time. I'm pretty sure that no person on the street asked to name the first three Mariah Carey records they can think of would name OSD, though.

Looks like record is tied then. 15 on Monday, and nothing's (probably) coming this tracking week and Friends is off to a pretty weak start so there's 16 weeks.

Queen Taylor is coming for that ass though so tying the record is looking like the likely outcome.

1,152,734. And yesterday didn't count, right? This was a great decision. Although it'll havr less sales, it may have monstrous streaming. And streaming is the more important component. Plus, the radio has more time to grow. By Monday, itay have more spotify streams than Despacito overall. It may have more in other places, too. So... #1? streaming, #1 sales and great starting radio = #1?
The lack of ausic Video may hurt it, but it may have an insane amount of views (predicting 30-35 mln in the first day) so... I think that it'll get to #1 IF the Music Video will drop soon.

There's no way it out streams Despacito with no video. Despacito is still upwards of 45 million streams, even songs with music videos don't come close. Why would one with no real YouTube presence come closer?

Does Friends have an airplay deal? If not there's no chance at a number one especially since it's not really dominant in sales, it's only between 15 and 20 percent ahead of Despacito. Won't make up for the sales and streaming gap though.

I say it debuts at about 80 this week and jumps to 3 of 4 next week. Despacito is gonna get it's 16th week and then be dethroned by Chart Queen Taylor Swift

Despacito will soon start falling, and the discount is not helping. Too many people bought it. Although I doubt that it'll instantly dethrone it, it does look like the chance for that to happen is, well, in existence.
And if the guys from Houston are going to play it EVERY HOUR, then sure, it has a deal.
