Maybe the promo single strategy leading up to the album release just doesn't work anymore for bigger artists like Taylor, Rihanna, or Justin?
I could honestly see the same disaster happening with those artists if they went down the same path.

This song reminds me so much of Dark Horse. It bridges Pop and electro pop really well into a mess that is actually very enjoyable. Not one of the best songs from Taylor though. I still have high hopes for the remaining songs on the album.

Man, could you imagine if the song was released Thursday as well? The hype would be insane.
I blame the ABC promo.

I was under the impression that the second single was going to be something we haven't heard yet, but my predictions continue to be wrong! This is easily my favorite of the three songs she's put out so I'm fine with the decision. The video looks to be another great visual so hopefully it'll bring back a good amount of interest to the song.
I'm also hoping this will get re-added to the top of TTH after the video release. Swap it out with "LWYMMD" since "Gorgeous" is still new.

RFI is ABSOLUTELY the best of the 3, and perfectly bridges 1989 with the new darker sound.
I wish she would've just launched with this, but oh well. It's not like this doesn't grab attention plenty as is.

Gorgeous is a much better choice. Honestly I don't like any of it. I don't think this is a good direction for her and ultimately I think it will hurt her. But the song Gorgeous at least has a chance of bridging both pop and the fan base that likes her as wholesome. I see that as the best chance for a hit that sticks from this album. The first one and this one may be hot for a short while but I see no longevity for them. Gorgeous has received the worst reception for a Taylor Swift song since... god, the Speak Now era.

That doesn't change my opinion. It might explain not going with it, but I still say there is no longevity in the others. They won't stand the test of time.

Let's not go overboard. That song went #1 on iTunes and I know a big portion of the fandom actually likes that song. Doesn't mean we weren't disappointed much because the SS fans overhyped it. It's just an inoffensive little pop song.

But if you're willing to accept that's why they're not going with it, surely you can then see that Gorgeous would also not have any staying power in the long run because of that same reason, and likely MUCH worse than the other two. deepston - going to #1 upon release means nothing, especially these days when sales are so low. A huge fanbase can get a song to #1 easily, mostly because a fanbase will even download a song without listening to it. The hardcore Swifties praised Gorgeous for some reason, but it has been panned by most others. (Fan favorites also don't make good singles for this reason. Stans are largely blinded by the name.)

I think this is a much better than Gorgeous myself since Gorgeous is really mediocre but i can understand why people jam to it! It's really catchy. And a #1 promo single on iTunes certainly means something hm...

!!! That teaser looks so good!! I can't wait! I love how Taylor makes good songs, but also just as good (or in the case of this era, better) videos! Also, it is out Thursday night so probably October 27th 00:00 EST

No. Having a poor reception out of the gate doesn't mean that at all. It probably prevents us from ever finding out, but there are numerous examples of songs with poor initial reception that got a second chance and were hits and have lasted over time. One really does not necessarily have to do with the other. I see it as having a much better hook, but to be clear, I don't like that one either.

One really does not necessarily have to do with the other. I see it as having a much better hook, but to be clear, I don't like that one either. I think you're missing my point where Gorgeous was met with a resounding "meh" by people that aren't her hardcore fans. I'm not talking about a song that few even knew existed that got bland reception at first. I'm also not talking about reception on this board. It's everywhere. It's a very clear mediocre track that hasn't clicked with the non-fans at this point. Why waste time and effort on a track that isn't a surefire hit when this one is sitting right there in their faces with actual staying power evidenced by its radio success and longevity in sales and streaming? deepston - Blah Blah Blah went #1 on iTunes. Judas went #1 on iTunes. Countless One Direction and Jonas Brothers tracks went #1 on iTunes. A new song from a majorly hyped artist going to #1 on iTunes, regardless of single status, is not really a sign of anything except that the artist had hype. Staying power is a sign of a song actually connecting with its audience, and given that Gorgeous is still riding that new release hype, it'll be awhile before we're able to state if any of its chart stats indicate that it's resonating.

What the... Gorgeous is an album filler and it sounds like an album filler... I don't understand why you're so focused on a promo single chart run.

I guess I don't see the general public randomly streaming or downloading it if they aren't fans. Maybe that's just me. Sometimes I wonder if results don't get a bit skewed that way.

Sometimes I wonder if results don't get a bit skewed that way. It's one of the top songs on Spotify's Today's Top Hits playlist, they're not "randomly" streaming it, it has a platform.

This video looks INSANE. I’m so excited. And I’m glad we can finally put the second single question to bed, planned or not. Although I can’t see how it wasn’t planned with a video like that waiting in the wings.

Gorgeous is currently #49 on The Mediabase building chart which means there is a good chance that it will be in the Mediabase top 50 tomorrow. So Taylor might have 3 different songs in the mediabase top 50 at the same time.

So I guess they’re really going with this for the next single. Wow. If this is the best Taylor has to offer with this album this might just be the first album of hers I don’t buy. And 1989 was already borderline for me

Even my friends who are not big Taylor fans love that album.
