Is it just me or did the trailer imply there'd be some kind of actual battle between the two Taylors? All that happened is that Dark!Taylor stood and stared at Light!Taylor shifting into different forms for two minutes before the latter busted out of a glass box. And they're both Transformers. EDIT : Based on this MV alone, she plays a more convincing and appealing superheroine than any of the mainstream actresses I've seen thus far.

This is not about the haters either. It's about being a completely different person to the media because of the backlash. She just wants to be herself. Think about the cage as Taylor's mind, she shatters it and comes through as her robotic persona starts to gain life, killing her old persona and finally being able to be herself.
I think this is a hint that reputation will be a very intimate album.

The video is by no means terrible or awful, by any stretch of the imagination. The plot development and clarity of the symbolism could've been better but the overall visual aesthetic of the video was incredible. Feels somewhat underwhelming still, by Taylor standards at this point, but still shits all over the majority of videos out. Let's be real. lol The theme was left field for the lyrics, but honestly I liked that. The last thing I wanna see is a literal visual representation of her chasing a crush.

Still, not sure this is going to propel the song to a higher Hot 100 peak (or least of all the pole position) without the added something needed to spruce up the freshness of the track itself which has been lingering for quite a bit already. We will see.

Meanwhile: a visual album would be everything!

The music video looks like a million bucks (it probably cost several, so duh). But it falls completely flat thematically and just in terms of holding attention. The trailer was better.

She'd get more mileage promoting this album out of one hyped up sit down interview than all of these expensive videos.

I feel like this is kind of an issue I have with a lot of this campaign and the material so far, combined with the statement that she just threw on some black and went for the Country Club definition of "dark" backing tracks. But ultimately, this is the same ground she covered on Blank Space, and without the humor and personality behind it. The only part where she's displayed that was the end of the video to the lead single, and it stands out so much especially now because none of the other steps around the campaign have shown it.

Taylor's strengths (besides being White and rich) were her curiosity, her stellar songwriting, and her ability to communicate her POV. Her albums followed this thread too. Fearless was an expansion from her country steps to more mass-mainstream, Speak Now was a successful exercise in writing an album completely solo, Red was her exploring many sounds, and 1989 was her proper focus on Pop and Global megastardom. And throughout every step, the fact that she also took the time to explain her approach in interviews. People have brought up Beyoncé and Adele's relative reserve on this front at times on this board, but where Taylor really stood out over everything was bridging her jumbo-sized image and popularity with a very personal and detailed approach. That's largely missing here, and there's a noticeable attempt to try to make up for it with a massive budget.

I'll be very surprised if I dislike the album, because I can pick several songs off of any of her albums that were the best releases of their respective years. I won't like it as much as SN or Red, because having two tracks like this and Gorgeous is enough to put the ceiling below those masterworks, but she'll be welcomed with a huge debut regardless. Any major blips that come as a result of all this won't really be felt until the next campaign anyway. Yeah, she still has the crazies who will support everything without a thought, but that's besides the point here. She's withdrawn from her core strengths enough so far that those gaps add up to a noticeable total. There's a lot of flash and hype, which is understandable for a star of her magnitude coming off of her biggest release ever, but yet it still comes across as a bit dull, which was never the case before.

I'm still so-so on this being a visual album because she was still filming less than a month before release, which goes against her hyper-detail leave-no-stone-unturned approach, but a mini-film of some tracks does sound plausible if this is meant to be a jumping point.
