The music video was cool, but I was like “but why?” The whole time.

Searching for meaning in a music video when it has such blatant, unrelated-to-the-music-video lyrics is annoying. I'd say Taylor is probably on strike two with the general public for this album.

The vídeo lines up well with the song, as both are OK but unremarkable.
Would have worked better as sort of a visual tease for what the era would look like; as the follow-up to the LWYMMD video (arguably the only part of the reputation. campaign to work as expected so far), it's pretty meh.

The video literally has no plot other than "dark Taylor with a Hoodie" in a room with "Cyborg Taylor who resembles old Taylor" and then one of them comes out on top? Like said above, I feel like this is strike 2 from the public for this one.

I know people don't like hearing what "the general public" thinks. Here's the deal, I think despite my major chartophile past, my family is pretty representative of an average family aware of the biggest hits and not much else (that's true of me now too). This came on at a kids birthday party, I told my wife this was the new Taylor Swift song, She said "really? Wow, that's not very good".
No one is deluding themselves that Taylor is an amazing singer, or anything like that, which means she has less wiggle room for the quality of the song. It will be interesting to see how this does. We like most of her previous work, but not this.

Ok so the video has amazing visuals, but I literally do not get why they didn't even attempt a plot or connecting it to the lyrics. Like, have a hot guy be hoodie Taylor instead of Taylor looking in on Robot Taylor creating all these amazing visuals and then she breaks free and just that one small change automatically ties it to the lyrics and some sort of plot for me. Like, it wouldn't have even been hard to make really small tweaks that would have developed some kind of story or connection to the song. Still really like the song-sorry

This will be a visual album and she'll announce the next single when reputation drops, calling it now. If it is indeed going to be a visual album, hopefully the next video will have some kind of larger revelation to justify the slow moving plot line so far. The battle between two Taylors has now been the theme of both videos. The reputation story has to advance now, no?

This video is nice-looking but boring and pointless. I have no need to ever watch it again.
That said I still like this song. I've never been one to think videos matter that much. I think a great one can really help and a horrifyingly bad one can hurt - but those extremes are rare, and outside than that no one cares. This is meh so it won't help or hurt the song much either way IMO.

Out of curiosity, how strong are the top three (Hot 100) in points? What would this need in steaming/airplay/sales for a new peak (#3 for starters) next week?

Saw the video last night. It's pretty good, but not something I would rush to watch again. It does have replay value, though. At least she didn't make the video longer than she had to.

While I enjoyed her previous video and watched it a good number of times, I found this one totally boring. By the end of the video (which I couldn't wait for it to come) I was done. First and last time I watch it.

I think Taylor is making a play for the heterosexual teenage/college male demographic here. They're not going to buy or listen to her music when they can watch her music videos on mute for free when they take their phones/laptops/tablets into the bathroom to for their daily take off your pants and jacket. They were never here for her music nor will they be in the future. But as a sexually woke bisexual male, she does absolutely nothing for me. They said teenage/college male. How old are you? The video was stunning and gave me WestWorld teas.

I believe a key part of Taylor's success and appeal has been her accessibility, her down-to-earthness despite her astounding hit maker status. That's regardless of how hypocritical or snakey she may also be perceived. An ask for this era was for her to be more real, less sweetie cutie pie and more embracing of her bitchy side. However she's going the extra route and appearing too holier than tho and inaccessible with these videos and the silence behind them, plus the supposed "darker" sound (although to me that lesser imitation of a Fergie-like rap is more Becky-trying-to-be-ratchet-and failing-in-the-attempt than edgy, dark, risky but I digress). I honestly don't think this is what she needs or what the GP wants from her. She is almost entering Gaga's BTW territory where her videos are becoming weirder: Big budget and lots of FX but plotless and almost self-indulgent, while creating an aura of mystery that is making her appear less approachable. I'm getting more concerned now after the disappointment of Gorgeous and how extra this video is... 1989 is one of my favorite albums of the past decade, and I've been a Taylor supporter since Love Story, but I'm losing interest in this era

"My friends didn't like it"..... Everyone knows if your friends love a song, it is a hit (insert eye roll). Sales, views, and streaming don't mean anything.
Some of these posters in this thread obviously have nothing better to do, so they post the same redundant, petty post. I understand that your "queen" doesn't have much going on sales and chart wise, but it doesn't mean you have to lambast another artist.

Making her less approachable? Everybody who is a minimal stan of hers knows what this video is about and I have yet to see one of hers fans disliking this video. It's really aesthetic and it DOES have a plot, just not a complex one. I don't think she even wants this song to be a crazy big hit, she's just filling space between LWYMMD and the album release since Look is dropping like a rock in radio and this song has a very positive reception. Also the like/dislike ratio on RFI video is NOWHERE near the ratio on Look so this song is pleasing the GP.

I'm tired of people trying to kick down Taylor when they think she's down. This song has been steadily gaining on airplay since it came out and is now in the top 20.The video views for this are now up to 8 million.Gorgeous is the #1 digital single for this week.I understand people are thinking about the fall thar LWYMMD took but she still has 2 other singles doing good. Most artists would love to have the success that Taylor is having.

The music video looks like a million bucks (it probably cost several, so duh). But it falls completely flat thematically and just in terms of holding attention. The trailer was better. She'd get more mileage promoting this album out of one hyped up sit down interview than all of these expensive videos. Perhaps she doesn't want to address all of those major issues that have surrounded her through these last few years regarding her high profile breakups, who/what various songs are about, Kimye, the sexual assault case, the Katy feud, the allegations of her being a potential Trump supporter, the allegations of her being a mouthpiece for the Aryan nation, etc. These are all incredibly messy things. She can't avoid talking about them forever, but perhaps the fallout from said interviews might overshadow any new project she has coming out and she doesn't want that to happen. However, the failure to address some or even all of these things will lead to the media creating their own narrative and other speculation as they are doing already. Putting out 'responses' in the form of the songs or hidden messages and symbols is interesting but it will lead to all sorts of crazy conspiracy theories and other speculation. She had to address some of it eventually. She really can't tell a certain media outlet not to ask certain questions because they are simply doing their jobs (some artists' management might tell a media outlet not to ask certain questions sometimes). But if the media outlet were to report that she refused to answer certain specific questions or she made a huge fuss about it, that would make Taylor look bad. Or if she reacted inappropriately to a certain question and they release the footage anyway.

Are we expecting larger radio updates starting now or just the regular 100's this has been getting?

Are we expecting larger radio updates starting now or just the regular 100's this has been getting? Well, if you look at the last few day's updates and rolling, it's spins have increased dramatically since it was officially announced as the second single to radio. Exactly a week ago from last Tuesday it only got like +15 spins. It's not gonna start getting +300 right away, especially since it has been around since early September.

The video is visually stunning. Sure there’s no plot, but why do we always need a plot? The thing is a blockbuster movie. I love it.
There’s also a lot of symbolism here, so I feel like maybe we’re just “missing” the plot.
