EXTRA Burning The GroundAlbum: Decade: Greatest Hits Released: November 1989 Featuring an audio sample from the movie Barbarella & snippets from nearly every one of their bit hit songs & videos, this mashup/medley was the only new material on their greatest hits collection from 1989. This "song" was added as a bonus track on later pressings of the Big Thing album. A similar mashup/medley of their hits called Decadance was the b-side to this single. #7 Italy #23 Ireland #31 UK #75 Netherlands

Have been loosely following along with this rankdown...think it's my #2 vs. #17 now. Unfortunately, I'll think I'll have to settle for a P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING! (also, pretty sure me and rainie are soulmates, at least when it comes to Duran Duran. Glad someone else agrees with me on "The Chauffeur" being their best song - not a very commercial song, but it has such a mysterious atmosphere to it. We evidently share the same #2 as well, and she seemed to agree with me on a bunch of other songs too.)

8. Planet Earth (11): A song I discovered later in the 1980s thanks to a video special of Duran Duran in the first UHF music video channel back home. Loved the video and liked the song, which sounds just as fresh as back then. 7. Union of the Snake (7): PERFECT RANKING! An 80s classic with those female background vocals that were so DD at that time. Another epic video as well. Great to see it in this position 6. Girls on Film (13): Another classic, with a video that was the first sexxxy video/film I ever watched. Like it, but just not as much as other remaining songs --happy to see it outside the top 5 5. Rio (10): This was the first song/video I ever heard/watched of them, back in '83. I have always liked it, and especially the saxophone, and the video made me like it even more 4. Save a Prayer (6): Actually, I wasn't a fan of this song when it was released. Overall it was almost a flop back home. However, some years later around 1990 a few radio stations decided to put back in rotation a few '80s oldies and this song found new love back home, and from me as well. With time, I've really appreciated it and it has become one of my favorites from them. 3. Ordinary World (3): I liked this song when it was released, and it became a personal chart topper for a week. However, my favorite was Come Undone (2-week chart-topper and higher in my yearend ranking). With time, OW has become my favorite. Good to see that I had another and final P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!

WHEEEEEE!
I loved both of these songs about equally (just slightly below "Rio"), so I was always going to be okay with whatever won, but I will gladly take that P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING if it means we get a surprise winner (and a surprise blowout winner, no less).

Yessssss!!! Should've put it a spot higher so I could've gotten that perfect ranking, but still no complaints! Yay! I was trying to tank it (which evidently worked)

Thanks for everyone who participated & a special thanks to peacebone for putting together the closeness pairings & rankdown closeness for me. As I said from the beginning, this was my first attempt to host one of these & now i know how much work goes into it. So now I will have much more respect & admiration for all of the other hosts in the other various rankdowns. I've loved DD since I first heard HLTW back in 1983 on Casey Casem's America's Top40 as a kid. In doing all of the research for this rankdown, I realized there was much I hadn't known about the band. I would start watching old interviews & podcasts with various band members on YouTube & couldn't pull myself away until I realized it was 3am & I had to work at 9 so I had to get some sleep. And of course going back & watching all of the music videos was a blast from the past. I've grown to love the debut album more than ever & my best discovery was "Friends Of Mine" which I now realize that I severely underranked. Although I'd heard the full album once or twice, I had settled for just a handful of songs & only purchased the full album the week I decided to put this rankdown together. If you don't own it - go get it now! Of course I had already owned Rio, 7&tRT, Decade, Wedding Album & a few others (as I'm sure all of you do). Thanks again for all of your contributions. I hope you enjoyed it - I had a blast!

8. Planet Earth Easily in my top 5; which might let all of you know what is my #1 song. This song like a lot of early Duran Duran songs, had a perfect intro. I can't fully explain it, but that intro and the song's overall melody where perfect fro a song titled "Planet Earth"
7. Union Of The Snake I'm really happy this one made the top 10. The video is another perfect example of the band choosing exotic scenery to tell the story.
6. Girls On Film Damn. Both me and the host just lost their number one. I actually heard this before "Planet Earth". The intro with the camera clicking followed with the drums, was all I needed to reel me in. It's basically the story of a soft core porn shoot. You won't know this until you view the uncensored version of the Music video. For the clean version, we'll just say it's the story of a photo shoot. "Lipstick cherry all over the lens, as she is crawling" is probably one of my all time favorite lines in a song. I really wish this song had made the top 5.
5. Rio and there goes the perfect #2 for this rankdown. This is actually my favorite song off "Rio". I think Duran Duran songs had perfect breakdowns. "Girls On Film" had that that percussion breakedown, but this one has an even juicier one with a killer bassline and saxophone. Another thing that I recall was much better in the 80's where the lyrics to the music. While "Girls On Film" used Erotc lyrics, "Rio had some amazing exotic lyrics.
4. Save a Prayer and this would be the perfect New Wave ballad of the 80's. Probably only second to "Drive" from The Cars. Again Duran Duran created the perfect atmosphere for this song with the synthesizer intro.
3. Ordinary World Another great one. I honestly didn't think 90's Duran Duran song would end up this high. It's a great song, but in many ways the true 80's essence of their music was not present. What I did love about the song was the beautiful melody and as always, Simon's vocals never ceased to amaze me.
2. Hungry Like The Wolf This was the song that started it all for them in the pop top 10. I still remember how great this song sounded on the radio. This is one of the reasons I would wake up early every Sunday, just to hear Casey Kasem tell me this song was in the top 3 pop songs of the week.
1. Come Undone I'm probably one of the ones most surprised to see 90's Duran Duran beat out 80's. What I did love about this song was the lyrics. They felt very 80's Duran Duran. Another point to take into account, is that the lineup here was not the original fab 5. Roger and Andy were no longer part of the band and it really was evident in the song's style. In the end, what's important is that this is a great song and I was more than exstatic for their comback.

The extras and information about the band were especially interesting. Looking forward to the next one. Smiths?, Cure? count me in.

Smiths?, Cure? count me in. well, there's a certain band from Boston who started out in the late 70s & is finally getting inducted into the R&R HoF ... perhaps they should be next? perhaps you should host?
